How to Uninstall Programs in Windows 10

  • MORE

Uninstalling unwanted programs is one of the most common and important tasks that all PC users perform. However, if you're new to Windows 10, you may not know how to remove every app. The old-school Programs and Features and control panel menu that Windows 7 and XP users are used to still exists, but won't actually delete newer kinds of apps.

Whether it is a desktop program, a Windows 8-style Modern app or a new-fangled Universal app, there's one simple way to remove it. Here's how to uninstall any program in Windows 10, even if you don't know what kind of app it is.

  1. Open the Start menu.

    Start button

  2. Click Settings.

  3. Click System on the Settings menu.

    Select System

  4. Select Apps & features from the left pane.

    Select apps & features

A list of all installed apps appears in the right pane.

  5. Select an app you wish to uninstall.

    select app

  6. Click the Uninstall button that appears. If it is grayed out, this is a system app you cannot remove.

    Click uninstall

  7. Click the Uninstall pop-up button to confirm.

     click uninstall

This is a useful article to a degree, but what about apps that are embedded and don't show up on your list to uninstall. I refer to something called SQL Anywhere Personal Server that seems to be embedded on my new HP laptop. I spent several hours letting someone from Microsoft Tech support roam around my laptop trying to uninstall it - he couldn't do it. I called SAP who makes the app and they were no help, because I haven't purchased the product and therefore don't qualify for tech support. Holy Hell. It's evil. It copies my files on my desktop and then won't let me delete or even put them in folders, saying that it can't be done because it's open in SQL Anywhere Personal Server. I'm ready to return the laptop and just quit working.

Indeed Microsoft is making Windows 10 unamangeable. I just received some big update (that I did not want...). "Apps & Features" does not exist - I guess it did earlier.

I will set up a Linux machine and see if I make the switch over to it. Windows 10 is becoming ridiculous.

This is nice but only covers what windows will allow you to uninstall. Can't uninstall the Store or 3dBuilder this way.

To permanently delete some additional apps (about 15 apps) select start -> all apps -> windows power shell and start power shell as an administrator.

    Command to uninstall the Store:
    Get-AppxPackage *store* | Remove-AppxPackage

you can do that for skype, get office, maps, money, news, 3d builder etc.

For a complete list of packages which includes uninstallable system apps like Cortina and Edge enter:

    Get-AppxPackage > C:\packages.txt

Browse to the root level of the C drive to open packages.txt
