How to Use the New Calendar App in iOS 7

  • MORE

Apple's refreshed Calendar app in iOS 7 has a brand new look and feel. It's simple, clean and easy to use, if you know how. With the right know-how you can even toss those third-party calendar apps you've been using. Here's our step-by-step guide to easily navigate your way through the app, add events and keep your life organized.

1. Open the Calendar app. Like the rest of iOS 7, the Calendar app is much more minimalist. Instead of a gray calendar showing the month, and then the day's events below in white, the new app is almost all white. At the top, instead of a monthly view, you see just the week, with the current day circled in red. Below, a timeline for the day dominates. A red line cuts across the middle, showing the current time, and at the bottom are options to view the day's schedule, Calendars and your Inbox of calendar invites. Swipe to the right or left to show the previous or the next day.

2. Press the Month at the top left to enter a monthly view; as with the daily view, the current day is encircled in red; small gray dots below a date indicate that there's an event on that day. From here, you can scroll up or down to view each month.

3. Press the Year at the top left to view the entire year. In this view, you won't be able to see if there's an event on a particular day, but if you select a particular month, the calendar will change to that view.

4. Rotate the screen to landscape mode to view the current week. You can switch to this mode from any of the other calendar views (Day, Week, Month and Year).

5. Press the Plus in the upper right corner to add a calendar event. Like the previous Calendar app, you'll be presented with fields for the title and location, time, whether or not the event repeats, invitees, alerts, what calendar you want to add the event to, and your availability.

6. Change the duration of an event in the daily view by pressing and holding on an event. This will highlight the event, and two small circles will appear above and below the box; drag a circle to change the start or end time of the event.

7. Press the Search button next to the Plus to search your calendar. The screen will change to show a scrollable list of all your events.

8. Press Calendars at the bottom middle of the screen to select what calendars you want to appear. Here, you can also choose whether or not to show birthdays and declined events.

I can't use the add label. It's grey and inaccessible!!! How am I suppose to add events to my calendar! Help!

  • Andrea Says:

Since I updated my phone I have not been able to add any appointments to my calendar. The + symbol is grey, not highlighted in red. How can I fix this? I depend on ths calendar.

  • Ginger Says:

Sometimes it is best to leave things alone. This last update made the phone harder to use -- I miss easy access to the list, scrolling; the new icons are ugly and hard to use. Maybe you should make a phone just for seniors. We need a phone that is simple not one that is primarily for office use, i.e. setting up appointments, etc.

The calendar app on my wife's iPad does not work like your description.
The Month title does not register to the actual month in the month or week display. Turning the iPad does not bring up the week display.

  • Cindy Says:

I so dislike the changes to the calendar when I updated to ios7. Also now every-time my cheek touches screen, i lose the call. Samsung galaxy is looking pretty good.

  • Debris Says:

I so hate the new calander -it would help to see the colour code if the event on the main calender as you have to go into the month and page to book an appointment as the event could be anything including birthdays. I havent up graded my ipad so I can use the old version but of course it plays up the syncing process!

    1) in the old mail you had 4 buttons below: today. List. Day. Month
    -simple !
In IOS7 that is now spread all over the place to :
-button below 'today' -> give you month
Pressing the day in the month -> give you the day
top right mirrorglass -> gives you list

    2) When you had the month shown in ios6 it showed the appointments on the same page bottom 1/3 of the display, and you could scroll. That is gone now. Nothing like that in IOS7

    and and..
This is yet another example of trying to improve something that works. Similar to what Yahoo mail did recently when they removed tabs, so you now cannot e.g. switch between a draft mail, a search result and a some mails you read.

I guess these people just dont use their own product ?

  • Susan Says:

I HATE the new calendar, so do my husband and my daughter! What happened to seeing a list? What about the month view? Grrrr.......raspberries to Apple.

  • Siva Says:

How do I invite people to events in the calendar? Is this app for real? They just change the look and feel and remove ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT features of a calendar? It can't be... There has to be a way. Help!

  • Christine Says:

The new calendar is horrible. As I attempt to set an upcoming appointment at whatever specific time and I attempt to scroll to a specific time the whole page scrolls, are you kidding me? Setting appointments now is an absolute nightmare, whoever designed this needs to be fired.

  • Lynda Says:

Alerts are still there. After entering event and time, just scroll down on same window and you will see choice of alerts as before.

  • Louise Says:

What happened to alerts? I don't have the same options to customize how far in advance I want notifications. This is a feature I use all the time and is critical to me.
