Kohjinsha Shows Off Dual-Screen Netbook Prototype

We love our desktop multi-monitor setup, but you can't take two screens with you on the road. Or can you? Last year, Lenovo was the first notebook vendor to ship a product with a second screen. The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds  is expensive and extremely bulky and its second screen is only 9-inches -- better for holding your IM window than actual work -- but it opened the door that other vendors are starting to walkthrough.

An upstart Alaskan company named GScreen has been showing off concept photos of its dual 15-inch screen SpaceBook for a while now. However, so far nobody has seen one of these systems in the wild.

Enter Japanese notebook-maker Kohjinsha. At the CEATEC Japan trade show, Engadget spotted a dual-screen Kohjinsha netbook and caught the entire incident on video. The system is a prototype with no pricing or availability announced yet, but specs include:

  • Two 10.1-inch LCDs that display at either 1024 x 600 or 1366 x 768. The LCDs slide out, so you can use just one if you like.
  • An AMD Athlon MV-40 CPU
  • 4GB of DDR2 RAM
  • 2.5-inch SATA HDD
  • Windows 7 home premium
  • Weight under 4 pounds

Check out Engadget's exciting hands-on post and video for a closer look at the Kohjinsha dual-screen netbook.
