Targus is well known for making quality notebook bags and cases, and the $89.99 Spruce EcoSmart is another winning entry in the company’s catalog. Constructed of 100 percent recycled nylon, nickel-free metal, and recyclable plastic, this PVC-free backpack, designed for use with the 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro, helps you tote your notebook and related accessories while keeping environmentally conscious.
Measuring 18.7 x 13.0 x 8.2 inches and weighing 2.4 pounds, the EcoSmart is a solidly built black backpack that’s accented with green stitching and pockets. It features six exterior pockets and a number of pen holders and interior mini-pockets. A 15-inch MacBook fit snugly inside the thickly padded main notebook compartment, but with a system in tow, there was little room for additional gear in that compartment. Fortunately, an additional large zippered area stashes magazines, cords, and other goods, and an earbud-holder is built into the right strap for neatly containing long wires.
Upon donning the EcoSmart, we were pleased with the level of comfort. The backpack features ample padding designed to help protect your body from the bag slamming against you when you’re in a rush. Two thick pads provide comfort to your shoulder blade area, while another pad positioned horizontally on the bottom of the bag safeguards the lower back region.
Inside, the EcoSmart features foam padding within the main compartment that isolates a laptop from anything else being stored in the same area. An elastic Velcro strap holds everything in place should the bag get turned upside down.
It’s a bit on the expensive side at $89.99, but the Targus Spruce EcoSmart provides plenty of pockets and compartments for storing a notebook, books, magazines, and a variety of other gear without sacrificing comfort. Our only other gripe is that the EcoSmart isn’t available in multiple colors; if that isn’t a major issue, you’ll find it an excellent all-around backpack for your Mac.
