The Callpod Fueltank, a portable charger than can supply juice to two gadgets at once, is more powerful than competing products, but at $69.95--not counting the cost of extra tips--it's a little pricey for what it does.
The Fueltank, which has a metal finish, measures 4.9 x 3.4 x 0.7 inches and reminds us of a double popsicle stick. It's too bulky for pockets, but it fits unobtrusively inside notebook bags or purses. The device has two mini-USB ports, and it comes with a single mini-USB adapter. For devices that have a different charging port, you'll need to purchase specific tips from Callpod for $9.95 each.
During our tests, it took just under 2 hours to charge the Fueltank fully using a wall plug. You can see its progress by pressing the small rubber button on the underside of the unit, but the device doesn't alert you when it's finished charging.
When full, Callpod claims that the Fueltank stores seven times the capacity of a regular gadget battery; unfortunately, the device did not live up to those expectations. We were able to charge an iPhone in an hour and 23 minutes, but in doing so, we nearly drained the Fueltank. When we charged an iPhone and a hands-free Bluetooth speaker from Samsung simultaneously, we were able to juice to iPhone's battery to 75 percent and fully charge the speaker. At this point, the Fueltank was dead.
The Callpod Fueltank is a pretty versatile charger, and it should come in handy when you don't have access to an outlet. We like that it can charge two gadgets simultaneously, and that it works with the iPhone--something the Lenmar PowerPort Mini couldn't do. Just expect to charge it nearly as often as your other gear.
