I gave MagicJack a test drive to see if it would work as a stand alone phone service, I was impressed by it's EZ inst., but when I tried to use it like a regular phone service I quickly discovered it wouldn't work when my laptop went to sleep, I decided it work as a reg. phone, so I wrote a letter discribing the reason why I was returning it in the orig. package W/ all the paperwork and wanted a refund, after a month with no reply from MajicJack I called to find out why I hadn't gotten a refund, the person was rude and said I didn't get a refund because I didn't return it properly and I didn't know some code # when I told her everything I got from them is in the package I returned, how could she expect me to remember it, she said it didn't matter as my time to get a refund was over. We winter in AZ and purchased a MagicJack to be able to keep in touch through the winter. While still in Canada I tried 2 or 3 calls and found it not clear. They assured me it would work well in AZ. I have tried over the last week for 4 to 5 hrs each day on their chat line to try to get it to work! Now they tell me I am past my 30 day trial period so will not refund my money. What an inferior product! I sure gave it a fair trial and followed all their instructions. My computer froze when I was working with the MJ and I was fearful what was going on inside. I have cleared all MJ software and truly caution anyone thinking of using the product. Please post this review so that everyone knows to read all reviews including negative ones so they will hesitate before throwing away their money. PLEASE Do not buy a Magicjack - they do not work, the reception is next to nil when you do get a dial tone but most time it simply does not work!!!!

MagicJack puts some cache files on your hard disk, these should be deleted every so often and the choppy call problem is not going to occur and if it does you can correct it on the fly. works fine, research a fix before you complain, people!

It's not without it faults but it did save me tons of dollars calling friends and family back home in the midwest while I was studying abroad in Europe for 6 months. Yes, at times, the calls were choppy, the calls faded in and out, and I had to call my friends back, but those little quirks were infrequent. With the little quirks aside, the call quality is exceptional, calls are loud and crystal clear on both ends even from half-way around the globe. To me, the benefits out-weigh the little quirks. I was able to stay in touch with my friends and family in the US with all the free unlimited calls that I had made through Magic Jack and my laptop in Europe.

Thank you for the warnings, I won't order one till they get the bugs out. They did give me these two phone numbers if you wish to try contacting them by phone: 800-214-9512 and 800-649-1271

I like my magicJack. I don't love it but I like it. Every now and then I have to hang up and redial because of a bad connection. I haven't had any problems with a loose connection. I unplug it when I'm not using it because I have landline and cell phones.

This has to rate high on my list for the worst thing I ever purchased. It's bad enough that your lucky it works sometimes and when it does you have to sit in front of your computer while it goes through all it's advertising.Getting in touch with someone in customer service, you proably have a better chance getting in touch with the President and by chance you do get someone they have no idea what they are telling you and you hang up only to find the information they gave you is worthless.I think they must get paid on how many phone calls they answer.I'm stuch=k with this thing for one year and then I can burn it and put it and me out of it's misery. If you are thinking of purchaseing one of these, you would be better off jumping off a bridge. What more can I say.

It shipped fast, very easy to setup. I use my laptop first and it worked fine. I got it for the area code. I run a biz and use my cell phone. The landline area code looks better than a cell on ads. I plugged it into my server to just leave on and it doesn’t work. The server has no sound card. I guess you have to have a sound card to use the analog phone. Over the last 6 months I’ve found that 9 out of ten calls will go through, sometimes less. Call forwarding works good. Voicemail sounds like crap. Calls are ok over the phone but wouldn't say better than a cell phone. This is not a good replacement for a phone that is used a lot. This is nice to just have around. Good for collage kids or maybe someone that never really uses a home phone but needs one and has a good computer and internet source that is always on. Forwarding works without being plugged in. Overall rating: 4 out of 10.

DONT BE FOOLED: This does not work and there is no customer support. By work I mean that calls do not do go through but that they are so choppy you can not stand it. I thought it was my internet connection but I have tried it many places and get the same result. Other than their automatic MagicFix, there is no assistance since the "connect to live support" button just loops back into their FAQs!

DO NOT BUY IT. There is no customer service, 5 days after ordering and my order still has not shipped you only have 25 days left minus the 3-4 that it will take to get here for a refund. I called the number shown earlier for the company and a process server answers, as in if you want to serve them with a lawsuit. There is only a PO box for the company-starting to sound a little funny here. Good luck if you'r e happy with yours.

I bought mine online. I have enjoyed using it with no problems except one: You cannot use MagiJack if you have any media recording software in your computer (Roxio,Nero, etc.) there is a conflict. I have not been charged yet. The sound quality is excellent and it works fine. My gripe is that they should inform potential buyers that they cannot use it if they have any cd/dvd recording software.

The price of MagicJack caught our attention. We ordered it and plugged it in, unplugging the VOIP we were using. The thing that we noticed right off was the clear sound. After a couple days, we started having some problems but I found the fix on their site as well as getting help from the online chat with them. That call had to go to level 2 support. Since then, we have been happy with it. It is plugged into my computer so I can't open programs when I'm talking to someone on the phone. The advertisements? They are for MagicJack. We haven't used a landline in years and we aren't going to go back to it. And, we're staying with MagicJack. I can live with the small difficulties. Telephony has come a long way!

Do NOT buy magicjack! They do not give a phone number to reach a person at, and their chat with someone icon does not reach a person, it sends you around and around in a wild goose chase. The equipment doesn't work right, often does not ring or provide a dial tone, and the quality of the voice is not always good either. Who ever heard of a phone service that does not provide a phone number to call if you have problems???

If you've pondered ditching your landline because of exorbitant phone bills, magicJack just may be for you. It's an unassuming cigarette lighter-sized plug-and-play USB telephony device that offers unlimited local and long distance calling within the U.S. and Canada (international dialing expected by the end of the year). We were pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to use and the quality it provides for less than $40.

Installation was simple: We plugged the 0.9-ounce magicJack into a USB port on a Windows-powered PC (Mac OS X drivers will be available by the end of the year), and about 30 seconds later the bundled software automatically loaded. After registering the device and receiving a personal magicJack phone number (users will be able to port their existing numbers to the service before the end of the year), we plugged a standard landline phone into the device's phone jack and began making calls. Users who wish to forgo a traditional handset can opt to use a cordless phone.

You can also use the magicJack to make calls using your PC, whether you're at home or on the road. Dial using the keyboard or an onscreen keypad, and you can talk using either a headset or your computer's built-in microphone and speaker.

The overall voice quality was good: better than most cell phones but not quite on par with true landlines. Friends and colleagues reported only the occasional crackle and pop, and we didn't encounter a single dropped  call on our tests. This level of quality and stability is courtesy of magicJack's proprietary network, which maintains a solid, reliable connection that the company claims can't be achieved on traditional VoIP channels.

MagicJack doesn't skimp on features, either; it comes packed with all the amenities you'd expect from a phone service, including voicemail (you can receive messages even when you're offline), caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and emergency 911 dialing.

Priced at a reasonable $39.95, magicJack comes with a year's worth of service (an annual subscription runs $19.95 after that, with international prepaid packages starting for as little as $5). Although it's designed for use with a single phone line (multiple lines require a magicJack for each) and your PC has to be turned on to use it, the magicJack is a fine way to cut your monthly telephone bill without making too many tradeoffs.
