Disable Special Effects to Make Windows 7 Performance Snappier

Not every notebook is built to handle the special effects in Windows 7. Here's how to disable them.

We love Windows 7 Aero glass and such special effects as Aero peek, Aero snap, and thumbnail previews on the taskbar. However, an older computer with a slower processor or an underpowered netbook (something running an Atom Z520 or Z530 CPU, for example) might take a performance hit in exchange for this eye candy. To disable Windows 7 special effects:

  1. Right-click on the Computer button or icon and select Properties. The System window appears.
  2. Select Advanced System Settings. The System Properties window appears.
  3. Click Settings under Performance.
  4. Select "Adjust for best performance" if you want to disable all special effects. Otherwise, select Custom and try disabling some (but not all) special effects to see if performance improves.
  5. Click OK.
