AirPods are by far Apple’s most personal product. You’d share your MacBook, iPad, or even iPhone, but you’d be hard-pressed to share your AirPods with another person. They are private; they go inside your ear canal. And that is what makes Apple’s upcoming AirPod update quietly so innovative.

Ahead of WWDC, Apple’s annual developer conference, sources at the company have leaked that your very personal AirPods may be even more personal. They’re going to know about the most private moment of your day.

Sleep is arguably the most private, vulnerable moment of our days. Many people largely do it out of the sight of others — except for the occasional subway nap or park snooze. Our bedrooms and beds are private. Many of us go to sleep with our earbuds playing music, a podcast, or some other audio as we drift off to sleep.

Audiologist Dr. Valerie Pavlovich Ruff told Health Essentials, a publication of the world-famous Cleveland Clinic, that wearing your earbuds to sleep can be beneficial to stop ringing from tinnitus or other medical problems. There’s also the fact that our minds race before bed, and wearing earbuds or AirPods can help, Pavlovich Ruff says.

“Emotional stress can cause ringing in your ears, too,” Pavlovich Ruff told the publication in 2022. “This is why many people might want to fall asleep listening to something soothing or relaxing just for stress relief.”

Of course, it's critical to wear comfortable earbuds and ensure the volume is at a safe level. That’s where Apple comes in.

This week, 9 to 5 Mac reported that a “sleep auto-pause” feature may debut as soon as Monday’s WWDC 2025 keynote. The publication reports that engineers at Apple is developing technology that will sense when the AirPods wearer falls asleep and the AirPods will automatically pause.

This auto-pause has two significant benefits. Most importantly, even if you listen at a high volume, it won’t be at that high volume for the entirety of your sleep. And two, far less critical to your health, your AirPods battery will be preserved.

We know that Apple Watch’s sleep feature kicks on automatically when you fall asleep, tracking your deep, core, and REM sleep. What we don’t know is whether those AirPods will enter auto-pause mode based on data from your Apple Watch (which is connected to your iPhone) or if they will sync with your iPhone directly and bypass the Apple Watch.

If it does sync to Apple Watch, you could very well take a nap, and the auto-pause feature won’t kick on. Anybody who wears an Apple Watch and takes the occasional Saturday afternoon nap will know that naps don’t often register as sleep within the Apple Health app.

The most private moment of your day — when you doze off for a good night’s sleep — may be recognized by your Apple Watch, iPhone, and your AirPods. Just don’t forget to keep the volume down.

The 9 to 5 Mac report also included other features that may be available on AirPods as soon as Monday.

They include new head gestures for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 to control conversation awareness, a noise-control feature that you can currently control by touching the tip of your AirPods.

Apple may also announce improvements that help multiple users share an iPad, like in a classroom setting.

Perhaps great news from streamers and anyone who makes video is the ability to control your iPhone camera by pinching the tip of your AirPods.

On the audio side, AirPods will also sound differently depending on your environment by using AI. It will also enable the wearer to choose from three voice options, reports 9 to 5 Mac, “in-frame, studio, and cinematic.”

Whatever Apple announces regarding AirPods or anything else, we’ll know on Monday, June 9, when WWDC kicks off at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern.

Apple might be focusing its efforts on the iPhone thanks to the current tariff situation, but it does have other popular devices that it's working to improve upon with newer versions.

One of its most popular lines of devices is the AirPods. Last year, Apple sold more than $18 billion in AirPods, and it appears a new version could be coming next year.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted on Sunday about the next iteration of the AirPods. He predicts a new version won't be coming until sometime next year.

"AirPods may not see significant updates until 2026 (aligning with my earlier prediction that IR camera-equipped AirPods would enter mass production in 2026)," Kuo wrote.

The addition of cameras to the earbuds would be used for gathering data for AI. Visual info picked up by the cameras would give an AI more details about the environment, which could be used for some features although no details have surfaced about what those features could be.

Earlier in the week, a string of code was discovered in an Apple update that is being viewed as a leak of the release of the AirPods Pro 3, as reported by 9to5Mac. The snippet of code referencing a task changed from saying "This task requires Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Generation" to "This task requires Apple AirPods Pro 2 or later." This change doesn't mean a new version of the earbuds is right around the corner, but it does hint that they're being worked on.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about new versions of the AirPods.

The AirPods already have some interesting changes coming thanks to AI. Apple plans on using the earbuds to incorporate new health features such as checking a user's temperature, heart-rate monitoring, and other biometric data. The company also wants to bring live translation to the AirPods later this year. And just last year, Apple added a hearing aid feature to the earbuds as well.

What's next for AirPods Max?

The AirPods weren't the only device Kuo mentioned in his tweet. He also said a new version of the AirPods Max would also be coming.

"A lighter version of the AirPods Max is expected to enter mass production in 2027," he wrote.

The current iteration of the AirPods Max came out in 2020 with only a few changes made since then such as going from Lightning to USB-C, slight changes to the build, and more colors.

Back in 2023, Kuo predicted that the AirPods Max 2 would come out in 2025. That ended up not being the case, although it's unclear what might have caused this two-year delay by Apple.

I love my AirPods Pro 2. They sound great, the noise cancellation is stellar, and they are incredibly convenient to use in almost all use cases.

However, when Beats unveiled the Powerbeats Pro 2, I saw the first earbuds that could challenge the AirPods Pro 2 as my go-to earbuds. So, I picked them up and spent a week using them instead of my AirPods Pro 2 to see what would happen.

After a week of using the Powerbeats Pro 2 instead of my AirPods Pro 2 at home, at work, and exercising, I’ve come away with a much better understanding of where each of these plays a role in my everyday carry.

AirPods Pro 2 are still my “everyday” earbuds

While I’m mostly using my AirPods Pro 2 during work, I also use them around the house. Whether I’m taking a walk over lunch and giving my parents a call or listening to a podcast while I’m doing chores around the house, they are an everyday carry of my everyday life.

I tried using the Powerbeats Pro 2 instead of my AirPods Pro 2 here and, after a week, I’ve found that, while the Powerbeats can technically replace my AirPods Pro 2 — they can make calls and pump out music, podcasts, and audiobooks — the AirPods Pro 2 are more enjoyable to use.

They’re easier to pop in and out of your ears, the Adaptive Audio feature is great for switching between quiet and loud environments while staying aware of your surroundings, and they’re more comfortable to wear over long periods of time.

Powerbeats Pro 2 for work is weird

The second area where I replaced my AirPods Pro 2 was my work life. As someone who works remotely, I am constantly on video calls, and while I could blast the audio through my desktop speakers, I’d rather use some earbuds. It’s also nice to throw on some music in between meetings while I am working — and that’s also better to listen to with earbuds — so I end up with them in for most of the workday.

Here, the AirPods Pro 2 also won out for me. I find them more comfortable to wear than the Powerbeats Pro 2, and that alone means a lot when you use them consistently over an entire day’s worth of work. The microphone is also better, which is a big deal as someone who is on Google Meet and Zoom calls a lot.

It also feels weird wearing Powerbeats Pro 2 on video calls at work. AirPods are basically the Patagonia vest of work earbuds now.

AirPods Pro 2 are still the king of travel

When it comes to traveling, especially flying, AirPods Pro 2 have surprisingly taken their place as my go-to headphones. While I’ve used the AirPods Max and Beats Studio Pro in the past due to over-the-ear headphones having the most obvious advantage when it comes to noise cancellation, the noise cancellation in the AirPods Pro 2 has gotten so close in performance that their convenient size has made them much simpler to travel with.

While I did not have the chance to hop on a plane with the Powerbeats Pro 2 to compare them to the AirPods Pro 2, I did the Youtuber thing and played some plane sounds out of my television to see how good each did to cut out the noise. While you can certainly get away with the Powerbeats Pro on a flight, the AirPods Pro still had noticeably better noise cancellation.

With that in mind, and already feeling the difference in comfort that the AirPods Pro 2 provide over extended listening, the AirPods Pro 2 are also my pick here.

Powerbeats Pro 2 easily win for workouts

While AirPods Pro 2 won in every use case so far, we know how this one will go. While I love my AirPods Pro for basically every other use case, I hate them for exercise for the same reason many people do: They will not stay in my ears.

They’ll stay in place if I do something standing and upright, like lifting weights. But start running, biking, or doing anything that requires you to lean forward or backward anywhere close to ninety degrees, and you can bet those babies are coming out of your ears. Whenever I use them on a run, a hike, or am even at home doing some pushups or situps, I constantly readjust them to ensure they don’t take a nosedive into the floor.

This is obviously where the Powerbeats Pro shine the most. With the over-the-ear hook design, they do what the AirPods Pro can’t: stay in place. I tried, purposefully, everything I could think of to get them to pop out of my ears — they would not budge. So, despite having a little less impressive sound quality and noise cancellation, they immediately overpower the AirPods Pro as my earbuds of choice when doing anything active.

Running? Powerbeats Pro 2. Hiking? Powerbeats Pro 2. Biking? Powerbeats. Leaning too far forward? You get the idea.

The only thing I noticed that bummed me out about the new Powerbeats is that, despite coming packed with Apple’s H2 chip, they aren’t automatically recognized by my Apple TV like my AirPods Pro 2. Even the Beats Studio Pro automatically recognize and prompt to be connected, which is disappointing, especially since the Powerbeats Pro 2 would be my headphones for an Apple Fitness+ workout. Hopefully, this will be an omission at launch, and Apple and Beats will work together to add this support to a firmware update.

The point of Powerbeats Pro 2 is clear

After using the Powerbeats Pro 2 for a week, the purpose of these earbuds is clear. While you could use them for everything, they are really tailor-made for the active part of your lifestyle. Beats’ marketing clarifies this, saying they are “built for athletes.”

I’ll continue to use my AirPods Pro 2 for most of my use cases at home, at work, and when traveling. However, I am immediately replacing them with the Powerbeats Pro 2 regarding my workouts. Together, they are a powerful combination that covers every use case you can throw at them.

Now I’ll have to decide if I still need my Beats Studio Pro!

With 2025 already gathering pace, it's time to turn our attention away from last year's hottest tech and look forward to a coming year of innovation.

While 2024 had plenty to showcase for Apple, including the excellent performance and efficiency of the M4 chip powering iPad Pro and MacBook Pro devices, this year promises to take things up a notch once again, delivering a swathe of upgrades throughout the Apple catalog and introduce the new M5 chip to select hardware.

So, what can we expect to see from Apple in the coming year? Let's find out.

Apple's product roadmap for 2025: The year ahead for MacBook, iPhone, iPad, and more

Between Apple's more "fixed" annual events, historically repeated release windows, and unofficial claims from reputable sources, we can paint a pretty detailed image of what's to come for the Cupertino-based company in 2025.

Of course, there's no guarantee that everything listed here will be released according to our estimates. Last year's iPad mini 7 was a prime example of how even the most in-the-know sources can be left guessing when it comes to the arrival of a new product.

However, as of the time of writing, these are our more informed predictions regarding Apple's itinerary of releases, starting in spring, 2025.

March - May, 2025

Putting aside last year's showcase of the Vision Pro in February, Apple typically waits a few calendar months before dropping any major reveals. If the company follows suit in 2025, then we can probably expect the majority of its next products to arrive in the spring.

• iPhone SE 4: One of the more anticipated iPhone releases in years comes by way of Apple's budget offering, the iPhone SE 4 — or, as rumors suggest, the newly named iPhone 16E.
  
  The new iPhone SE is expected to receive a full redesign, bringing it more in line with the look of post-iPhone 14 handsets, while adopting an OLED display with Face ID, the iPhone 15's Action Button, and an Apple Intelligence-ready processor (likely an A17 Pro or A18 Bionic chip paired with 8GB of RAM).
  
• MacBook Air M4: According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models featuring the M4 chip will launch early this year, closing the gap in performance between its MacBook Pro models, which are also set for a silicon refresh later this year.
  
• iPad 11: Similarly, Gurman reports that the 11th generation of iPad will also be released in the spring, offering several design changes and an Apple Intelligence-compatible chip, potentially the A17 Pro.
  
• iPad Air M4: Similar to its laptop counterpart, the iPad Air is also claimed to be due for an M4 upgrade, bringing more Pro-level performance to the ultra-thin slate in the near future.

June, 2025

Since 2007, Apple's annual WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) has historically fallen in the month of June, giving us a pretty solid expectation of when we'll get our first look at the latest milestone operating system updates for MacBook, iPhone, iPad, and more.

Apple's star-studded line-up of mobile tech typically takes center stage in September, meaning it's here we can expect to see the unveiling of the 11th-Gen Apple Watch (including the third-generation Ultra and SE models), new third-generation AirPods Pro, and the iPhone 17 family of smartphones — including the rumored new "Air" model, alongside familiar Pro and Pro Max options.

• iPhone 17: This year's iPhone 17 line-up will reportedly ditch the "Plus" model for a thinner and lighter "Air" alternative featuring a new single-lens 48-megapixel rear camera — a bold design change that according to The Information will extend to the iPhone 17 Pro models also, switching things up to a horizontal camera array and potentially stepping away from the titanium chassis of the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro.
  
• Apple Watch 11: The Apple Watch Series 11 is expected to include new blood pressure monitoring and blood-glucose tracking features, along with the potential adoption of Apple Intelligence. The next generation of Apple Watch will likely be powered by the S12 chipset, potentially offering better efficiency and a longer-lasting battery life.
  
• Apple Watch Ultra 3: The much anticipated Apple Watch Ultra 3 is rumored to include satellite connectivity and 5G access, but won't be adopting the micro-LED display tech after Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the company will be sidelining this adoption for the "foreseeable future."
  
• Apple Watch SE 3: The third-generation Apple Watch SE was expected to arrive sometime in 2024. However, clearly, we've been left wanting.
  
  Apple's smartwatch is expected to pull back on price by offering a plastic chassis and an S9 chip, and it is rumored that it will feature a "new look" redesign by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. While we could see this device appear far earlier in the year, it may make the most sense for it to launch alongside other Apple Watch models in September.
  
• AirPods Pro 3: The third generation of Apple's AirPods Pro are reported to receive a new design (including its charging case) in 2025 alongside an improved H3 chip affording better noise-cancellation and potentially more health-based features.

Beyond hardware releases, September is also the month that Apple's new operating systems leave beta testing and receive public releases. We'd expect further Apple Intelligence integration across the board here, along with the usual supply of handy, platform-specific features.

• macOS 16, iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and more to release

October - November, 2025

• MacBook Pro M5: Apple's crowning achievement in hardware could come by way of a new M5-powered 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro released later this year. Currently tipped for an October 2025 release, the M5 MacBook Pro would pave the way for Pro, Max, and Ultra models to follow.
  
• iPad Pro M5: With the iPad Air expected to receive an M4 upgrade earlier this year, it stands to reason that the Pro model of iPad may face a similar boost in performance, also adopting Apple's latest M5 chip late into 2025. Last year's iPad Pro was the first device to feature the company's M4 chip, and Apple may choose to award its high-performance slate with a similar refresh once again.
  
• HomePod mini: There are several rumors suggesting that work is well underway at Apple in the development of a new smart home hub with a display. However, the jury is still out on whether we can expect this product to arrive in 2025. In the meantime, Apple is expected to refresh the HomePod mini with a faster chip, improved WiFi and Bluetooth, and more colorways.

Outlook

Taking into account everything we've heard or know so far, 2025 is set to be a pretty stacked card for Apple. All of these anticipated announcements have the potential to satisfy a great many macOS, iOS, and even iPadOS users.

That's without mentioning some of the more exciting rumors surrounding a new Apple Vision Pro headset, a foldable iPhone, and a super-sized 17-inch to 20-inch foldable iPad — all rumored wildcards that may or may not feature in some way this year.

Simple fitness trackers evolved into smartwatches that track daily stats and heart rate, and eventually, smart rings were born to do the same. Why not add earbuds to the list of devices that can track basic health stats? Apple seems to think it's doable.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in the most recent Power On newsletter, Apple is working on bringing health features to next-gen AirPods, including heart-rate monitoring, temperature sensing, and tech that can track "a slew of physiological measures."

Considering the AirPods Pro 2 impressed the world earlier this year with a first-of-its-kind hearing aid feature that has since gained FDA approval, Apple's move in this direction isn't surprising. Given the narrative surrounding the current-gen Apple Watch, it's expected.

The AirPods Pro could be Apple's next big health-focused smart device

Gurman points out in his Sunday newsletter that the Apple Watch has "gradually gained health capabilities during the past decade."

The first Apple Watch could send notifications for irregular rhythm, a high or a low heart rate, and provide basic cycle tracking — and that's it. Compare this to the current-gen Apple Watch Series 10, which offers everything the Series 1 does, plus:

• An ECG app
• Low cardio fitness notifications
• Sleep tracking
• Sleep apnea notifications
• A Vitals app featuring heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and sleep duration
• Temperature sensing
• Cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates
• Emergency SOS
• International emergency calling
• Fall detection
• Crash detection

To say the Apple Watch has come a long way in the past eight years is an understatement. I remember when the Apple Watch Series 10 was announced, Apple marketed it as a groundbreaking health and safety device, promoting how it detected active heart attacks, saved people after a crash or a fall, or helped get an early diagnosis for heart-related issues.

Gurman reports that "AirPods will see the same thing happen over the coming years" and eventually become just as full-featured and health-focused as the Apple Watch. Apple's main focus at the moment is accurately measuring a user's heart rate.

According to Gurman, "In Apple's testing, heart-rate data is more accurate on the watch than AirPods, but the earbuds aren't terribly far off."

Once Apple has heart monitoring covered with relatively high accuracy, the company will start working on temperature sensing and other health-related features.

And here's the best part: We might not have to wait that long for these health-focused AirPods. Gurman says, "The capability [of measuring a user's heart rate] could be ready for the next-generation AirPods Pro, which is in early development."

The first-generation AirPods Pro launched in 2019, followed by the second-generation (and current-generation) AirPods Pro 2 in 2022. If Apple follows the same three-year release schedule, the AirPods Pro 3 will be released in 2025.

Apple didn’t even talk about one of iOS 17’s biggest features, and it's one that’s going to be a lifesaver for the phone call lovers out there — the option to mute/unmute calls using your AirPods.

You see, while the highly reported features do expand the iOS experience (like the annoyingly good StandBy Mode), this one is a small but significant convenience, and it’ll dodge the anxiety of putting the phone down on people without saying a word when someone comes up to talk to you.

So, rather than me blathering on about how this is going to avoid so many arguments, let’s just get into showing you how to activate it. For context, I did this using my AirPods Pro 2, but this should work across the board (provided you’ve performed the firmware update).

How to mute/unmute calls with AirPods

Step 1: Connect your AirPods by opening the case, open the Settings app, and tap on your AirPods.

Step 2: Under Call Controls, tap Mute & Unmute.

Step 3: From here, you can choose whether this feature is activated with a single or double press. Personally, I selected Press Once for Mute/Unmute, and Press Twice for ending the call, as to eliminate the risk of just putting the phone down on someone.

And voila! While in a call, you can just do a single or double presson the stem/crown to mute/unmute your calls.

It’s worth saying that none of this tech (even in the likes of the Sennheiser Conversation Clear Plus) has not received regulatory approval yet as a hearing aid replacement, though.

In terms of future rumored upgrades, such as body temperature sensors and a heart rate monitor, don’t expect them to make an appearance. Gurman is only expecting this long overdue change to USB-C and not much more.

Outlook

It’s only logical that Apple starts rolling out all of its key devices with the same USB-C standard, so as to not make the transition an awkward one. Having different standards out there is just a minefield for consumers to workaround, so being able to charge your new iPhone and AirPods with the same cable is warmly welcomed.

Whether there will be anymore new features or upgrades is currently up in the air. The last time we saw new AirPods was the third-generation back in October 2021, so you can only hope there will be some more internal improvements. Maybe a switch to touch controls, a bump up to the H2 chip, and a MagSafe charging case with speaker (with U1 chip for improved Find My performance).

iOS 17 is introducing a wealth of cool new features to supported iPhones, including Live Voicemail, Check In, NameDrop, and more. However, if you have an AirPods Pro 2, you'll get to enjoy even more iOS 17 updates.

Although Apple didn't publicly announce this feature, AirPods Pro 2 owners will get a new Adaptive Audio perk that is a catch-all term for three features: 

• Personalized volume (adjusts your sound's volume as you transition from loud to quiet areas)
• Adaptive Noise Control (adjusts noise-cancellation levels to ambient)
• Conversation Awareness (reduces the volume when it senses that you're talking to someone)

Interestingly, 9to5Mac found a cool new addition to iOS 17 with Conversation Awareness. As it turns out, Siri will say something like, "Just so you know, AirPods lowered the volume due to Conversation Awareness." In this way, you won't be confused as to why your AirPods' volume suddenly dropped.

More about Conversation Awareness

As mentioned, Conversation Awareness will turn down the volume if you're engaging in a conversation with someone, kicking off transparency mode. Consequently, you don't need to yell "huh?" anymore as someone mouths unintelligible words to you through your music.

Conversation Awareness is not to be confused with AirPods' Conversation Boost feature, which is designed to help amplify the voice of the person speaking in front of you.

If you're concerned if Conversation Awareness will kick in when you don't want it, it's smarter than you think. 9to5Mac's Michael Potuck tested the feature and said, "A slick aspect of Conversation Awareness is it knows when you're talking with someone versus being near others who are talking."

However, it's not completely free of faults. According to Potuck, Conversation Awareness kicked in when while he was singing along with his music — laughing triggered it, too.

How to turn off Conversation Awareness

If Conversation Awareness isn't something you want for your AirPods Pro 2 experience, you can turn it off by heading to Settings > AirPods > Audio. From here, you can toggle off Conversation Awareness.

Then there are the exclusive proprietary technologies that deliver unique listening experiences for their respective models.

Excellent products warrant high MSRPs, as is the case with the $249 AirPods Pro 2 and pricier $299 Sony WF-1000XM5. The odds of getting Apple’s buds for less are much higher these days; they’re often on sale for $199. Even if Sony’s newest buds aren’t discounted any time soon, they prove to be as valuable as the AirPods Pro 2.

What we have are two pairs of buds that replicate the silhouette and specific design elements of their predecessors.  

The AirPods Pro 2 are the same as the original AirPods Pro, but with an extra mic grille on the top, touch volume controls, and the AirPods 3’s skin detect sensors. Apple applies the same cheap plastic with IPX4 sweat and water resistance. These are still some of the comfiest and most optimally fit buds available, thanks to Apple’s new ear tip kit and precise Ear Tip Fit Test feature. The biggest change comes from the IPX4-rated MagSafe charging case, which has a built-in speaker with Find My support to send out a tone indicating the location of a misplaced device, plus a loop on the side to attach a lanyard.

Sony updated their award-winning design by making the WF-1000XM5 lighter, smaller, and less obtrusive on the ear. These buds take on the same minimalist aesthetic as the 5-star WF-1000XM4, only instead of a complete matte finish, Sony touched the exterior with a glossy finish that surrounds the matte touch panels. It’s a successful blend that adds to the buds’ premium appearance. The ANC mic housings have been replaced with flush mesh covers at the bottom. Great comfort and fit are expected, as the buds rest pleasantly on the concha and don’t take up the entire ear like the previous version. The charging case has also been reduced in size and weight for convenient portability and features a pairing button on the back.  

 As much as we appreciate Apple’s functional design, the practicality and style demonstrated on Sony’s buds are much more appealing.

Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. AirPods Pro 2: Controls

This is the toughest category to grade since both models have expansive control schemes consisting of precise motion detection, responsive touch gestures, and superb voice activation. We give this round to the AirPods Pro 2 for one reason: the force sensors. The pressure-based system near the bottom of each stem remains the most reliable input method. Incorporating onboard touch volume controls is ingenious. Wear detection to auto-pause content when removing the buds works well. Then comes the crème de la crème, “Hey Siri” functionality, to automatically fire up the AI bot and execute hands-free voice commands in a second.

The WF-1000XM5 have their own set of unique tricks. Sony introduced on-board volume controls via four-tap gesture. Voice activation for Alexa and Google Assistant operate well; Google Assistant and Siri can also be enabled manually. Sony’s smart controls return, like Quick Attention (drops volume to 10% when speaking) and Speak-to-Chat (automatically pauses when detecting your voice). Spotify Tap is even available to automatically open the streaming service and play favorited playlists when performing the shortcut command.

Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. AirPods Pro 2: Active noise cancellation

The WF-1000XM5 leap over the AirPods Pro 2 with ANC that stands neck and neck with the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2. Sony’s Adaptive Sound Control works with the QN2e and V2 chipsets, along with upgraded feed-forward and feed-back noise-sensing mics, to eliminate 95% of incidental sounds. Low frequencies and vocals are suppressed at a higher level than the WF-1000XM4, and wind resistance is flawless with the mesh grilles eliminating the harsh sounds produced by gusty winds.

We’ve enjoyed the AirPods Pro 2’s noise reduction, but the technology doesn’t “reduce up to two times more unwanted background noise” as Apple declares. It does cancel out low and mid-frequency sounds very well, as well as most blaring noises. Adaptive Transparency is the more impressive ANC mode, keeping listeners highly aware of their surroundings. Is it better than Sony’s ambient listening mode? No, but only because the WF-1000XM5 grants 20 adjustable levels of transparency for full control over how much noise enters the soundscape.

Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. AirPods Pro 2: Audio Quality

Apple isn’t known for their sound, but the AirPods Pro 2 show out on the audio front. Their adaptive EQ combined with a new low-distortion driver and custom amplifier result in richer bass and clearer presentation. You can tweak audio by playing around with the different EQs in iOS or enable Personalized Spatial Audio for great 360-degree sound with compatible Apple Music and Dolby Atmos content. Unique features like Headphone Accommodations let you tune audio for balance, range, and brightness. Headphone Audio Customization performs a series of listening tests to tailor audio to your hearing preferences. There’s also audio sharing to hear the same music on two pairs of Apple or Beats earbuds and SharePlay to listen and watch content with a friend.

The WF-1000XM5 have stronger audio technologies underneath their gorgeous sheath. Sony developed a new Dynamic Driver X unit that works with the latest processors to widen frequency range for more detailed vocals and richer bass. LDAC enhances wireless streaming by producing three times the amount of data from standard Bluetooth audio to enjoy full-bodied sound on hi-res streaming services like Tidal. DSEE is exceptional for upscaling fidelity on lo-fi recordings. The customizable EQ with well-engineered presets is clutch for personalizing the soundstage. Lastly, 360 Reality Audio with headtracking creates an intimate and lively listening experience that accurately follows your dome’s movements.

Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. AirPods Pro 2: Special features and app

Features are in abundance on both pairs of buds, though they vary, with some complementing specific mobile platforms.   

Many of the WF-1000XM5’s top features have already been discussed, including 360 Reality Audio, ANC/Transparency, DSEE, EQ, LDAC, Quick Attention, Speak-to-Chat, and Spotify Tap. These are accessible through the Sony Headphones Connect app (iOS/Android) and are compatible with Apple and Android devices, except for LDAC (Android only). Sony’s app also provides battery level indicators for both earbuds and the charging case, toggle controls for multiple functions, a music player, and firmware updates. Bluetooth 5.3 welcomes one-tap Google Fast Pair and multipoint technology to pair to two devices simultaneously.

No AirPods come with app support. Instead, Apple developed a dedicated menu for their wireless earbuds, which can be accessed in the iOS settings to customize and enable different settings. Several of these have been previously mentioned: ANC/Transparency, audio sharing, Ear Tip Fit Test, EQ, Find My, “Hey Siri” voice activation, Personalized Spatial Audio, and SharePlay. Other notables include automatic switching, Background Sounds to enjoy different ambient sound profiles, and Conversation Boost for emphasizing vocals during chats. The AirPods Pro 2 are masterfully integrated within Apple’s ecosystem, offering instant connectivity with brand devices. Bluetooth 5.3 also runs smoothly for fast and reliable connectivity.   

The AirPods Pro 2 might have the bigger feature set, but the WF-1000XM5 carry the more ideal and powerful features.

If you want longer playtimes, go with the WF-1000XM5. Sony rates battery life at 8 hours with ANC on and 12 hours with ANC off. The wireless charging case holds up to 36 hours, depending how you use the buds, and quick charging is much stronger than their porcelain adversary: a 3-minute charge = 1 hour of listening time.   

Apple did boost battery life on the AirPods Pro 2, but by a small amount. A full charge gets you 6 hours of ANC enabled and 7 hours with it disabled. Spatial Audio and high volume drop playtime to 5.5 hours. The MagSafe charging case holds a max of 34 hours and Fast-Fuel technology nets you 1 hour of playtime on a 5-minute charge.

Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. AirPods Pro 2: Call quality

Voice and video calls already sounded great on the WF-1000XM4, and they sound even better on the WF-1000XM5. Sony added bone conduction sensors to detect the vibration of your voice, helping isolate your speech from ambient noise. PVP (Precise Voice Pickup) technology clears up results on the opposite end. The wind noise-reduction structure also makes wind a non-factor when chatting in gusty conditions.

 The AirPods Pro 2 take a step back in call quality. Voice and FaceTime calls still sound loud and clear, and the inclusion of head-tracking support makes conference calls more engaging. It’s the noise cancellation that doesn’t perform well, allowing more ambient noise and wind to enter conversations.

Just when the AirPods Pro 2 proved to be an equal competitor to the WF-1000XM4, Sony leveled up and gave us a new category leader in the WF-1000XM5. New processors create vibrant hi-fi sound that isn’t compromised by adaptively smart ANC. Sony continues to add and release new features that serve well for different purposes. Refinements in design complement both comfort and style. Lastly, the controls and connectivity are on point.

A loss doesn’t make the AirPods Pro 2 any less valuable. They offer the best true wireless experience for Apple users. No other 3D audio format can compete with Personalized Spatial Audio. Stronger ANC and transparency modes aid with disruption-free listening. Additions like the MagSafe charging case with built-in Precision Finding support are also greatly appreciated.

Each model is well worth the splurge, but if we had to pick one, the Sony WF-1000XM5 offers a little more for their price.

Best Apple headphones

Apple’s wireless headphones live up to the hype with exceptional audio and ANC performance. Underneath the sleek, clean-looking design are 40mm custom dynamic drivers that pump out near-audiophile-grade sound, balancing frequencies superbly well to enjoy rich mids, highs, and lows. Spatial audio helps create the illusion of a 360-degree soundscape when listening to music or watching movies. If you like the AirPods Pro’s noise cancellation, the AirPods Max is even more impressive, employing eight mics to effectively block out the majority of external sounds. Seamless iOS integration means you’ll not only connect to Apple devices with ease, but also gain access to numerous software perks including audio sharing, automatic switching, and “Hey Siri” voice activation.

It’s ballsy for Apple to price their headphones $150 higher than Bose. However, for Apple fanboys who live on iOS and macOS devices, these cans are the ideal audio investment, if you can afford them.

Best Beats wireless earbuds

The Fit Pro offers near-identical performance to the AirPods Pro (Gen 1) and improves on Beats’ innovative design. Noise cancellation is highly effective, and sound is superior to all AirPods models. Having access to most iOS features is always appreciated. The installed wingtips and IPX4 rating make the Fit Pro a must-have for gym rats.

Be mindful that the Eartip Fit Test isn’t as reliable as the AirPods Pro version. Also, the Android app lacks extra features, though you’re still getting much of the meat and potatoes that come tied to Apple’s ecosystem.

Best budget buds

The first-gen AirPods Pro is a much bigger deal than any of us could have predicted. Through some clever engineering, Apple managed to squeeze three microphones and six sensors into the tiny buds, redesigned the casing, and still had room for its lauded H1 chip. This all makes for one well-rounded experience that makes usability seamless across numerous verticals, from connectivity to sound personalization to voice activation (“Hey Siri”). Audio quality surpasses what previous AirPods models offered, and noise cancellation is undeniably great for blocking out incidental noises during commutes.

The stem design isn’t the most attractive, but at least it has been shrunk down to a more discrete size. You’ll also need to deal with the low battery life, granted the charging case does provide some relief when on the go.

Best all-around audio

The AirPods 3 is a definite step up from the AirPods 2. It gives listeners a more premium look in line with the AirPods Pro, though it stops just short of aping the top-tier product, falling more into the barely mid-tier range category. Thanks to Apple’s chip wizardry, the earbuds deliver clear, warm audio whether you listen to music, watch TV, or are on a video call. And I highly recommend taking the spatial audio feature for a spin.

You get many of the AirPods Pro’s premium features on the AirPods 3 at about $20 cheaper and nearly an hour more battery life with MagSafe charging capabilities. If you’re looking for a powerful update to the popular AirPods 2 without totally breaking the bank on the Pro, the AirPods 3 is the way to go, hands down.

Most balanced headphones

Beats headphones get a bad rap for being more style than substance. While the company’s original noise-cancellers, the Studio 3, was a solid pair of sound blasters, they didn’t exactly live up to their promise as a potential category leader. The Solo Pro certainly changes that argument. This sleek pair of on-ears pumps out refined, balanced sound and features effective noise cancellation and a nifty transparency mode that filters in more ambient sound so you can be aware of your surroundings. You get a decent amount of battery life to work with at 22 hours, but Beats’ Fast Fuel technology helps speed up the recharging process when necessary, generating 3 hours of playtime on a 10-minute charge.

Apple also brings its H1 chip to the Solo Pro, which enables seamless pairing and a fun audio-sharing feature for when you want to listen with friends who also own pair of Beats headphones or AirPods.

Best Apple multi-platform wireless earbuds

Platform-neutral performance on a pair of Apple earbuds was a pipe dream until the Beats Studio Buds came along. These super-tiny, cordless in-ear monitors play nicely with iOS and Android devices, operating on a new (and undisclosed) processor that provides true Find My Buds support and one-touch pairing to Apple or Android phones via Class 1 Bluetooth connection. Apple tweaked the soundstage to give these buds more refined sound than the Powerbeats Pro. ANC is also shockingly good on the Studio Buds and cancels out a wide number of ambient sounds. Battery life is rated higher than the AirPods Pro as well.

Some iOS users won’t be happy about unsupported features such as auto switching between iCloud-registered devices and Siri Announce Notifications; these are exclusive and tied to Apple’s H1 processor. Nonetheless, the performance and value these buds offer is too good to ignore.

Best value earbuds

Fast, smart, and longer-lasting than the first-gen model, the AirPods 2 remains a top-tier option for iPhones owners who want the true wireless Apple experience without spending extra on the AirPods Pro. A current price drop to $135 (check Amazon) makes them even more appealing. Apple gives people what they want with wireless charging and a hands-free approach to Siri. Other notable features include a Find My iPhone setting, Announce Messages with Siri, audio sharing between two AirPods or Beats headphones, and instantaneous connectivity to iOS/MacOS devices. The AirPods 2 are also set to receive automatic switching as part of the upcoming iOS 14 update, which is rumored to launch this September.

On top of all of that, you’ll find much pleasure in knowing the AirPods 2 holds a longer charge (5 hours) than the AirPods Pro (4.5 hours). However, portable power is the same, with the charging case holding 24 hours of juice. And the fact that they offer 50% more talk time is the icing on the cake, especially since the original AirPods' was near-instantaneous.

Noise cancellation has been increased as well to provide acceptable results; it’s good enough to drown out construction equipment and hush rowdy pedestrians.

Apple users get the best experience, thanks to the W1 chip, which increases battery life and connectivity range on iPhone models. Android users aren’t afforded the same luxuries, as the headphones often have trouble connecting to non-iOS devices. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to enjoy the Studio3’s quality sound and strong battery life.

1. If the AirPods are connected to the same Apple ID as your MacBook and are set up already via your iPhone, open the lid on the case close to your Mac.

2. Your Mac will detect your AirPods and automatically connect to your MacBook. You can go into sound settings and switch over.

3. If they don’t connect automatically, click the Bluetooth icon in the top bar of your MacBook.

4. Click on the AirPods in your list of Bluetooth devices.

The AirPods Pro 2 are here, and they are practically perfect. But how do they stack up against the original AirPods Pro?

Because sure, AirPods Pro delivered on all fronts: an upgraded H2 processor, updated touch controls, better active noise cancellation, longer battery life, and more. And heck, you can regularly see them with $50 off the list price.

But more often than not, you can cop the original pro-tier earbuds at around $150 depending on stock, which given Apple doesn't produce these anymore, is dwindling fast.

If you're after the AirPods Pro 2, the price is still $249/£249 — same as what the original AirPods Pro costed at launch. Well, only if you're planning a purchase on Apple's official website. 

While the AirPods Pro have always been $249, plenty of third-party retailers have dropped the price well below $200, especially during big sales.

For first generation AirPods Pro, your choices are quite limited. Sometimes, you'll see some new stock appear. But this will be inventory leftovers, as Apple doesn't make these anymore. Most of the time, they will be refurbished and cost around $150, which is pretty impressive value for money for what you get.

AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods Pro: Design

If you enjoyed the design of the AirPods Pro, then you'll be delighted to hear they haven't really changed. Although, you can expect a few updates to the touch controls. 

There were rumors that Apple was working on making the AirPods Pro 2 smaller and more like the stemless Beats Studio buds. However, the AirPods Pro 2 are nearly identical to their predecessors. However, the stems have a few new controls, thanks to the new Touch Controls. While you'll still need to squeeze the tiny stems to play, pause, and skip forward or backward, you can now swipe up or down to adjust the volume.

One extra design change comes with the added silicone ear tip. The AirPods Pro 2 will now come with an XS ear tip to allow for a better tip for more people. 

The charging case, however, underwent a small change that makes a big difference. The first is the addition of a small speaker near the bottom, which will play a loud sound when Find My is activated, making it that much easier to find the wayward case. Plus, there's a new loop so you can attach a lanyard so they don't get lost in the first place. 

AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods Pro: Audio

The audio quality, balance, and clarity on the AirPods Pro are already good, but the AirPods Pro 2 aim to heighten the quality to another level. This is through a number of improvements, namely thanks to the new H2 processor over the H1 in the last-gen model.

The biggest feather in Apple's cap is that active noise cancellation (ANC) is getting better performance. More precisely, "2x more" ANC over the AirPods Pro. With noise-cancelling microphones and a rear vent, the AirPods Pro 2 can detect sound coming in and reduce how loud it is. 

The newly introduced Adaptive Transparency is a breakthrough moment for transparency modes on any earbuds. In fact, this could be the best transparency mode in the category (more testing will determine its ranking). 

Working in my “office,” I was able to keep tabs on the little one and listen to music simultaneously. The mics also captured vocals well to hear and communicate clearly with people. The technology also does a plausible job of reducing blaring sounds (e.g., jackhammers, sirens).

There's also personalized Spatial Audio and adaptive EQ, but the latter is not anything new compared to the original AirPods Pro that boast the same. Of course, thanks to the H2 processor, responsiveness to head movement is a little quicker, but its good to know these are present in both.

This works through iOS 16 and the TrueDepth camera on your iPhone — creating a personal spatial audio profile that is unique to the size and shape of your head and ears. The result is impressive.

I pulled up Earth, Wind, & Fire’s “September” and was immediately enthralled from the start with the horns blowing vibrantly. Apple’s dynamic head-tracking exhibited superb accuracy, with all instruments transitioning smoothly from left to right ear whenever moving my head in each direction. 

Speaking of, that H2 chip is said to deliver lower distortion during playback, along with deeper bass and crisper highs. That's thanks to the H2 working with a new custom-built driver and amplifier.

AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods Pro: Additional features

As for the charging case, it's now compatible with Find My with Precision Finding, thanks to U1 chip. Your iPhone will be able to navigate to where you last left it, and the speaker will emit a loud tone so you can find out where it's hiding, too. 

Plus, the speaker will indicate charging, pairing, and low battery. That's a huge jump over the AirPods Pro case, which really just charges the AirPods and keeps them nice and cosy, without any of these useful features.

AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods Pro: Battery life

The original AirPods Pro had a rated battery life of 4.5 hours. Apple has extended the battery life to a much-needed 6 hours. Paired with the charging case, you get over 30 hours of battery life, making it one of the longest-lasting wireless earbuds on the market (identical to the AirPods 3, in fact). 

Sadly, the AirPods Pro 2 are still Lightning dependent (for now, until the EU's USB-C law kicks in). However, you can now charge the case via an Apple Watch charger in addition to a MagSafe or a Qi charger.

Outlook

So, this is a pretty foregone conclusion. If given the choice between AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro 2, pick the latter. 

The improvements are significant enough across both the audio quality and the user friendly features to make these an obvious buy. With the H2 chip, enhanced touch controls that let you swipe for volume adjustment, better ANC, and improved Transparency mode, these earbuds offer the upgrades many AirPods fans have been looking for.

Plus, with the regular discount bring them down to less than 200 bucks, it makes that $150 purchase of a refurbished pair of Pro 1s a whole lot less enticing.

Where things get a little sticky, though is when you compare the AirPods Pro 2 with Nothing ear (2)...

The AirPods Pro 2 were officially announced at Apple's September “Far Out” event. Since their release, the new AirPods Pro have been hailed as one of the market’s best noise-cancelling earbuds. Laptop Mag even awarded them a 5-star rating, praising the follow-up for their personalized 3D sound, smart active noise cancellation (ANC), and longer battery life. 

Despite the critical acclaim, there are some Apple fanboys who aren’t completely satisfied with the final product. The reason: lack of new features, which leaks, reports, and industry insiders had us believing would be in abundance. Only a mere handful made the cut.

Whether there are plans to add previously anticipated features in a future iOS update or leave them on the cutting room floor is unknown. Some of them may not even exist and will live on theoretically in Reddit forums. What we do know is that a few could have made these practically perfect wireless earbuds essentially flawless.   

Here are 5 of the best features Apple should have introduced on the AirPods Pro 2.

Interrupt for noise-cancelling audio devices

At the beginning of this year, AppleInsider spotted a patent entitled “Interrupt for Noise-Cancelling Audio Devices” that would introduce a more enhanced version of transparency mode. The feature would allow users to specify a “pre-designated contact” that an Apple audio device would recognize as an “interrupt authorized contact.”

In other words, this would make the AirPods Pro 2 smart enough to determine whose voices can be heard and whose should be cancelled out, based on personal preferences. In addition, the patent suggests multiple voices could be approved as interrupters, and that the buds could respond to pre-determined keywords.

Just think of how clutch this would be for commutes, office use, and when your partner needs a hand.

Lossless audio

When it comes to sound, Apple is focused solely on its Spatial Audio 360-degree sound format. However, more high-end wireless earbuds are jumping on the lossless audio bandwagon, giving the competition a serious sonic advantage.

It was rumored at one point that Apple was developing a new lossless codec, which would let the AirPods Pro 2 play back music at a higher quality on compatible devices. That turned out to be false. 

The AirPods Pro 2 operates on Bluetooth 5.3, but the product would require extra hardware (likely a Qualcomm processor) to deliver lossless audio. It’s possible that the feature is part of the AirPods roadmap and could be in the works.

Built-in health tracking

Apple has done a tremendous job of building out their health platform on iOS. The current push for Apple Fitness+ on non-Apple Watch devices (set to launch on iPhone/iPad this month as part of iOS 16.1) shows the company is ready to expand their fitness ecosystem. It would have been even greater if the AirPods Pro 2 supported the on-demand workout service or the numerous other health features that were rumored these past two years.

Buzz of the next-gen AirPods receiving a built-in heart rate and body temperature sensor was killed when Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (via the Power On newsletter) was told that "neither feature is likely to arrive in the 2022 upgrade." 

Were they just officially scrapped? Not that we’re aware of, but Gurman believes they could arrive in another future product. Two other fitness features previously suggested by experts include body-temperature detectors and posture-monitoring sensors. 

Other rivals are leaping ahead of the AirPods Pro 2 in terms of fitness functionality. The Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 has a heart rate sensor, and the Honor EarBuds 3 Pro comes with temperature monitoring technology.

USB-C charging

One of the oldest Apple rumors is still going strong today. Current iPads and MacBook Pros support USB-C charging, and the company just confirmed the iPhone will adopt the feature to comply with European Union law. 

Any hopes of seeing it on the AirPods Pro 2 were crushed when Apple supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo confirmed the company was keeping its proprietary Lightning connector to power up their next-gen buds.

USB-C is the more practical charging solution and gives gadget owners many benefits. For one, it delivers significantly faster transfer speeds than Lightning: up to 40Gbps versus 480Mbps. Power delivery is increased for better fast charging. Furthermore, Apple keeps its technology exclusive to their devices, whereas USB-C is compatible with a wide array of devices across all platforms.

Better Android support

Apple is petty, and it shows in their engineering practices. We understand why Siri remains exclusive to Apple products, but to leave the digital assistant function disabled and not allow for Google Assistant, Bixby or Alexa use is just cold. Even more frustrating is the pairing process, which often sees the AirPods struggle to establish a connection on non-iOS and macOS platforms, specifically Android.

As if that wasn’t enough, the AirPods Pro 2 brought about more technical issues. During our testing, we noticed bugs like audio muting after 30 seconds of playback on media apps like Spotify and YouTube. Apple’s AAC codec didn’t perform well either.

It’s not like Apple doesn’t have a solution for better Android support. They created the Beats Studio Buds specifically for this matter, allowing for seamless connectivity and use between both iOS and Android devices. These buds even support the Beats app that is available for download in the Google Play store for extended functionality. 

Apple and Beats’ offerings operate on different chip sets – the Studio Buds was designed with dual-platform, custom architecture. You’re telling me Apple can’t figure out a way to make their all-new H2 processor more Android-friendly? C’mon now.

Outlook – don’t expect to see these features anytime soon

Apple will definitely update the AirPods Pro 2 with new functions over its life cycle. It’s also a possibility that Apple relaunches the model in two years with new hardware stuffed underneath the hood to accommodate such features. Remember, they did update the original AirPods Pro with a MagSafe charging case during the AirPods 3 launch.

We’re only few weeks into the AirPods Pro 2’s release, so the thought of any major updates being introduced right away is foolish. If there’s anything in the works, it’ll likely be small improvements like fixed bugs or better mic performance on calls.

Big features are going to take time, which means living with your frustrations a little longer.

It’s been almost a year since the Beats Fit Pro came out. Laptop Mag considers it one of the best Apple wireless earbuds money can buy, and some critics even consider it Apple’s No. 1 true wireless model. I’m with them.                                      

For weeks, I’ve swapped between the AirPods Pro and Beats Fit Pro, concluding that the latter is the superior product. Could it be because it’s newer? Maybe it’s the fact that the two products are nearly identical, except the Fit Pro has a more enticing design and color options.

I have more arguments to make, and whether you agree or not, this is the hill I’m willing to die on. Let me put you onto the reasons why the Beats Fit Pro is Apple’s best wireless earbuds.

Form, function, and fashion – perfected

I question your taste in style if you think AirPods look hot. Seeing them always reminds me of a common joke that circulates among journalists: they look like tampons hanging from your ears. Despite their goofy appearance, I’ll admit the AirPods offer excellent comfort and flawless operation, specifically the AirPods Pro.

On the other hand, Beats pulled off the trifecta, giving the Fit Pro a practical design, along with high-end functionality and stylish traits. The oval shape is more flattering on the ears, and the installed wingtips increase on-ear stability. Specs are similar to what you get on the AirPods Pro (more on that later). Then there’s the iconic B logo sitting on the front button that brings prestige and swagger to the buds. Let’s not forget the variety of popping colorways: Black, Sage Gray, Stone Purple, and White.

The Fit Pro has only one limited edition release under its belt: the Kim Kardashian collection, which consists of three neutral colors that match the reality star’s signature nude palette. Roll your eyes all you want. That’s still three more colors than the AirPods Pro, and they’re very attractive.

Workout buds not pretending to be more than they are

Apple convinced millions of iPhone users that the AirPods Pro can be used for exercising. Apparently, an Ear Fit Tip Test, installed tips, and sweat/water-resistant (IPX4) protection automatically qualifies them for such use. These are not, nor were they originally designed to be full-on workout earbuds. I repeat – these are not workout earbuds!

The Fit Pro are workout earbuds. They come with a more secure fit, the same IP rating, and durability that’s far superior to the AirPods Pro. Beats’ hard plastic casing doesn’t crack or scuff as easily as Apple’s casing. There’s a reason Apple makes close to a billion in AirPods replacements annually.

Drop both pairs of buds in the free weights area at your gym (or even from a high distance) and see which survives.

Better performance for a lower price

There was a time when Beats products were overpriced. Now that they’re under the Apple umbrella, Beats wireless earbuds are priced lower than Apple’s top offering: the AirPods Pro ($249). Clearly, Apple wants you to know their flagship product is the one boasting both the Apple emblem on the packaging and higher MSRP.

The Fit Pro launched for $199 and has nearly the same feature set as its porcelain cousin. I’m talking all the bells and whistles: Adaptive EQ, ANC/Transparency mode, audio sharing, automatic switching, control customization, Ear Tip Fit Test, EQ selection, Fast-Fuel charging, Find My (AirPods) integration, “Hey Siri” voice activation, and Spatial Audio with headtracking.

Sound is more fine-tuned on the Fit Pro, producing fuller, more dynamic sound with tighter bass response. Noise cancellation is equally great. Battery life is slightly longer with a full charge generating 6 to 7 hours of listening time versus the AirPods Pro’s 4.5 to 5 hours. Beats’ charging case holds 27 to 30 hours, whereas Apple’s case maxes out at 24 hours. The Fit Pro is also more platform neutral and plays nicer with Android devices, providing app support and painless connectivity. 

The AirPods Pro has two high-end features you won’t find on the Fit Pro: force sensor controls and wireless charging. Most people can live without the two, especially since Fast-Fuel charging is standard on all Apple and Beats earbuds: a 5-minute quick charge = 1 hour of listening time.

What about the AirPods Pro 2?

I’m not foolish. The AirPods Pro 2 will likely go down as Apple’s true wireless crowning achievement when it releases. Some of the recently introduced features and minor design tweaks give it an advantage over the Fit Pro. But until I get a few months of use out of Apple’s latest creation, I’m riding with Beats.

Two factors already serve in the Fit Pro’s favor: longer battery life and securer fit. Are features like a MagSafe charging case with built-in speaker, personalized spatial audio, and touch volume controls going to make all the difference for the AirPods Pro 2? Maybe.

The all-new H2 processor is the AirPods Pro 2’s most compelling hallmark since it makes the buds future-proof. Then again, the H1 processor is still a beast that continues to take advantage of iOS updates and extend the lifespan of all compatible products, including the Fit Pro. 

And could the Fit Pro see a re-release with the H2 chip stuffed underneath its hood? This isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. Bear in mind that Apple has updated past AirPods releases. Look what happened during the AirPods 3 launch when they quietly updated the AirPods Pro with a MagSafe wireless charging case. There’s little need to revamp the Fit Pro since it’s still fresh and popular, so repacking it with a stronger processor is more ideal than creating a whole new model.

We’ll see if it ever comes to fruition.

Bottom line

Value is everything, and the Fit Pro gets you more for your dollar. The amount of functionality stuffed into these buds surpasses the MSRP. Moreover, the odds of snagging them on sale are significantly high; we’re predicting this to be one of the best Black Friday deals this year.

The first-gen AirPods Pro should receive a generous price drop once its successor comes to market. It also looks to be discontinued (Apple’s website no longer lists it). Securing a pair will only be more difficult once retailers go through their current stock.

This week, Apple's "Far Out" September event is expected to unveil the highly anticipated iPhone 14 lineup and new Apple Watch Series 8, but now there's another contender set to be revealed: the AirPods Pro 2.

Apple analyst Mark Gurman claims the long-awaited AirPods Pro 2 will be unveiled at the event taking place on Wednesday, September 7. This means we can expect an official release date to arrive this month, despite many believing the second-generation wireless earbuds would be announced at Apple's October event. 

“I reported last year that new AirPods Pro would arrive in 2022, and now I’m told that Wednesday will be their big unveiling,” Gurman states. “The new AirPods Pro will update a model that first went on sale in October 2019.”

To further back this claim, oft-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also believes the AirPods Pro 2 will arrive this year. However, Kuo states they are set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2022, meaning an October announcement is looking more likely. What's more, Apple has a consistent track record of releasing AirPods in October, including the AirPods 3 in 2021 and the first AirPods Pro in 2019.

That said, the AirPods lineup have had various launch dates, with the original AirPods being revealed in September 2016, and the AirPods 2 being announced in March 2019. Gurman has a reliable track record when it comes to rumors and leaks, and this is the first rumor that indicates a specific announcement date.

Whatever the case, all signs are pointing to the AirPod Pro 2 finally being announced this year. Previous leaks and rumors stated they were set to arrive back in 2021 and even in early 2022, but thanks to Gurman's report, we could see them as soon as this week.

What's new with Apple's AirPods Pro 2

After years of speculation, there's plenty to look forward to when it comes to the AirPods Pro 2. This includes an upgraded H2 processor that's expected to deliver better audio quality and longer battery life, an improved noise-canceling mode, lossless audio support via optical audio transmission, and motion sensors and fitness tracking tech.

As for the design, previous rumors indicated Apple will be cutting the stem off of the AirPods Pro 2, similar to the Beats Studio Buds. However, recent reports, including from 52audio, suggests the AirPods Pro 2 will look identical to the current model. Earlier this year, Kuo suggested the new AirPods pro would have an all-new form factor, which includes a wing-tip similar to the Beats Fit Pro.

Kuo also predicted that AirPods will switch to USB-C support in 2023. However, seeing as the AirPods Pro 2 are expected as soon as this week, they are still expected to get Lighting support. But that doesn't mean we won't see a case upgrade later on. 

At long last, the AirPods Pro 2 look to be fast approaching. Of course, that's not the only big announcement we can expect at the "Far Out" September event. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are set to steal the show, along with the new "rugged" Apple Watch 8 Pro.

Apple's AirPods Pro 2 are slated to arrive with the launch of the iPhone 14, but despite rumors suggesting they will come with a built-in heart rate and body temperature sensor, we may not see these health-tracking features after all.  

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (via the Power On newsletter), he's been told that "neither feature is likely to arrive in the 2022 upgrade." This doesn't mean these features will be scrapped, as Gurman also suggests that they may arrive in another future product.

The built-in heart rate monitoring was suggested back in 2020, and most recently in a report from 52audio. Along with this, sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal last year stated other health features will be introduced to next-generation AirPods, including body-temperature detectors, posture-monitoring sensors, and hearing-enhancing features.

While we may not see these health-tracking features in the second-generation AirPods Pro, 52audio also points out that the earbuds' case will make the switch to USB-C instead of Apple's usual Lightning connectivity.

This has been a long time coming for a range of Apple products, especially on future iPhone models. The iPhone 14 isn't expected to make the jump to USB-C, but we know that iPhones will require USB-C by 2024 in the EU thanks to an agreement to make USB-C mandatory for all devices. Gurman doesn't state otherwise, and it makes sense for Apple to bring USB-C connectivity to a product that hasn't seen a proper upgrade since 2019. 

More upgrades

Interestingly, 52audio points out the AirPods Pro 2 will have an improved "Find My" function, optimized fast charging, and a hearing aid function. In light of Gurman stating the heart rate monitoring and temperature sensor, it's uncertain how accurate the report's information is. However, it makes sense for Apple to include these upgrades.

The report also shows concept images of the next-gen earbuds, and they look exactly the same as the previous models: stems included. This contradicts previous reports, which indicate Apple will be cutting the stem off and offering a more compact design. As for the case, there will apparently be a speaker at the bottom, along with a hoop at the side of the case for users to add a strap.

Apple has yet to announce anything official for the long-rumored AirPods Pro 2, so it's a good idea to take this in with a grain of salt. While we expect the next AirPods Pro to drop in the second half of 2022, many believed they were set to be announced in 2021. How to update Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro

Apple doesn't offer a specific method to update its AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, as firmware updates usually roll out automatically. However, some may still be due for an update if not paired to an iPhone or iPad.

Follow the steps below to find out how to update your AirPods' firmware. 

1. Navigate to your Bluetooth settings in the Settings app on your iOS device (iPhone or iPad). 

2. Tap to connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌ to your iOS device. Make sure your AirPods are connected and in their case.

3. Leave the AirPods or AirPods Pro next to your iOS device. The AirPods should update automatically. It's a good idea to charge the AirPods or AirPods Pro case while updating, either with a Lightning-to-USB cable or with Qi wireless charging (if supported). 

How to check if the AirPods are updated 

Knowing whether or not your AirPods or AirPods Pro are up to date can be tricky, as updates may not be obvious. However, you can find out by checking the earbuds' version number. 

Next to AirPods or AirPods Pro in Bluetooth settings, tap on About (the blue "i" icon).

Scroll to the bottom and you'll find the firmware version. If it displays an earlier version, such as "4C165," then the earbuds still need to be updated to the latest version.

Apple released beta firmware updates for Apple Developer Program members, offering a sneak peek at new features. This gives us an idea of what to expect, along with how soon we'll see an update for all users.

However, there are a number of steps to install the beta firmware. AirPods Pro owners interested in downloading pre-release firmware should know there is no way to switch back to a previous version of the AirPods firmware. Regular users should wait for the next non-beta update to roll out.

As far as sales, the AirPods Pro are often marked down and have gone as low as $174. The Momentum True Wireless 3 won’t see a discount anytime soon since they just hit store shelves. 

Functionality and specs justify either purchase, but the high chance of scoring Apple’s buds for less gives them an edge.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Design

It’s amazing what a revamped design does for a product’s appeal. The Momentum True Wireless 3 boast an all-new look highlighted by an aluminum front with matte finish, debossed brand logo, rectangular shape, and sturdy plastic construction protected with IPX4 sweat and water resistance. An ergonomic fit with multiple tips keeps the buds comfy and stable. Sennheiser also brought back its signature fabric charging case, which is one of the coolest accessories in the category, and handsomely secures the buds.

Aesthetically, the AirPods Pro fail to match their rival’s craftsmanship. Apple did implement a few noticeable changes like an angled sound port, IPX4 certification, and the black speaker and mic grilles. The installed tips make all the difference for comfort and fit, plus Apple developed its own Ear Tip Fit Test for users to determine the best tips for their ears. And the charging case remains one of the most compact for convenient portability. However, Sennheiser’s achievement of creating something so attractive and well-built should not be overlooked.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Controls

Sennheiser developed one of the most responsive control schemes for a pair of wireless earbuds. Touch accuracy is stellar, registering single and multi-tap gestures without a hitch. Removing the buds automatically pauses any content playing in the background. Digital assistance is also fantastic, thanks to intelligible mics that demonstrate superb speech recognition.

Nevertheless, the AirPods Pro’s force sensor system remains unbeatable. Every single and multi-press gesture executes commands quickly. Motion detection is on point for enabling auto-pause. Then comes the true star of the show, “Hey Siri” voice activation, which automatically triggers whenever speaking the wake word phrase and picks up commands instantly, returning accurate results every time.

Winner: AirPods Pro

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Active noise cancellation

ANC on the AirPods Pro has aged well. Apple’s technology blocks out the majority of low- and mid-frequency sounds. The dual-mic array puts a muzzle on common distractions like electronic timers, loud TVs, and talkative co-workers. More blaring sounds like a car horn and baby cries are audible and enter the soundscape. Apple’s Transparency Mode also comes in handy for gaining greater awareness of surroundings.

Sennheiser improved their noise-cancelling technology, stuffing three mics into each bud and updating their algorithm to automatically adjust neutralization to your environment. The results are terrific. These buds eliminate more noise than the AirPods Pro across the frequency spectrum. Even high-frequency sounds like ambulance sirens and whistles are minimized at a level that doesn’t pull the listener away from their music. Wind resistance is solid on both models, though Sennheiser has an Anti-Wind Mode to reduce the whisking effects created in gusty conditions. Furthermore, the Momentum True Wireless 3’s Transparency Mode is stronger and lets in both external sounds and voices more clearly.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Audio

Apple’s sound quality was mediocre before the AirPods Pro. The additions of adaptive EQ and Spatial Audio have become vital to their success. A wider soundstage means you hear instruments and vocals better, while the boosted bass levels add oomph to recordings. Enabling Spatial Audio produces multi-dimensional audio and clarity that can be enjoyed on select Apple Music tracks and Dolby-Atmos-supported videos.

As appreciative as we are of the AirPods Pro’s audio accomplishments, the Momentum True Wireless 3 are just too powerful to compete with on the sonic front. Underneath the hood lies 7mm drivers, intelligible sound features, multiple EQ settings, and hi-res aptX Adaptive codec support that dynamically scales the bitrate to adjust what you’re hearing. The default sound profile is marvelous on its own, pumping out clean and depth-filled sound that complements all media formats, though tools like Equalizer and Sound Check make personalizing the soundstage a breeze.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: App and special features

Features are in abundance no matter which pair of buds you choose, but the difference maker is Apple’s ecosystem, which is perfect as long as you are all-in on Apple. The H1 chip allows for instantaneous pairing to iOS/macOS devices and supports advanced functions like Find My to track lost AirPods via the companion app.

New updates are being released quarterly for the AirPods Pro, adding to a limitless feature set that includes favorites like automatic switching, Siri Announce Notifications, and Conversation Boost to hear voices clearer during chats. We can’t forget the aforementioned audio features and “Hey Siri” integration. There are numerous other AirPods Pro tricks you can explore that enhance usability.

We’ve already discussed the Momentum True Wireless 3’s biggest features such as adaptive noise cancellation, Equalizer, Sound Check, Transparency Mode, and Anti-Wind Mode. Most of these are new to the series. Sennheiser programmed these buds with Bluetooth 5.2 to produce fast and stable connectivity with devices across all platforms. Unfortunately, the Momentum True Wireless 3 doesn’t have the same number of features as the AirPods Pro, nor does it come with a Find My Buds function.

Google Fast Pair and multipoint technology (pair to two devices simultaneously) are not available on either model.

Winner: AirPods Pro

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Battery Life

As anticipated, the Momentum True Wireless 3 comes with more portable power than its competitor. A full charge generates 6.5 hours of ANC playtime, which can be extended to 7 hours when disabling the feature. That’s good enough for 3 days of use before recharging. Speaking of which, the wireless charging case holds up to 28 hours, and a 10-minute quick charge equals 1 hour of listening time.

The AirPods set the industry standard for battery life on wireless earbuds when they first launched, but it doesn’t make what they offer serviceable by modern standards. A measly 4.5 hours of ANC playtime (5 hours with ANC off) is barely enough for two days of moderate use. The 24-hour charging case will practically live in your pockets. At least Apple’s quick-charging technology is fast, generating 1 hour of playtime in just 5 minutes. The newer version of the AirPods Pro comes with a MagSafe wireless charging case, but it doesn’t support reverse MagSafe charging for the iPhone.

Winner: Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 vs. AirPods Pro: Call Quality

Two years in and only one model has produced better call quality than the AirPods Pro: the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. Nothing has changed. Apple’s beamforming mics are exceptional at capturing and producing loud, clear-sounding vocals, while reducing external sounds. Having the H1 chip also gives you 50 percent more talk time than the original AirPods.

It’s shocking to hear the Momentum True Wireless 3 underwhelm as a calling headset when factoring in the larger mic count and more robust noise-cancelling technology. Only in quiet settings will you get crisp and interference-free call quality. There is some occasional muffle and Sennheiser’s mics pick up lots of background noise.

Winner: AirPods Pro

Overall winner: Tie

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a draw. These are two high-end models that offer their own unique listening experiences. The Momentum True Wireless 3 gets you premium sound and noise cancellation in a luxury design, whereas the AirPods Pro is all about interconnectivity with iOS/macOS devices and delivers immersive sound and satisfactory ANC in a familiar package.

The five-star Sony WF-1000XM4 still remains our current favorite for best wireless earbuds overall, but the Momentum True Wireless 3 and AirPods Pro aren’t too far behind. Either way, expect your money’s worth from both models.
