It’s security, manageability, systems stability, and sustainability,” Intel’s General Manager of Commercial Client Segments, Jennifer Larson, tells Laptop Mag.

Arrow Lake vPro

With the new Intel Core Ultra 200U, 200H, 200HX, and 200S vPro variants, the entire Core Ultra 200 series is now commercially viable.

The Core Ultra 200H and HX series offer up to 20% increases in multithread performance compared to the Intel Core Ultra 100 and Intel 14th gen CPUs. If we see similar performance from the 200HX, that would make the Core Ultra 200 series a worthwhile upgrade even for users on newer systems.

But for enterprise customers who tend to work on a three to five-year upgrade cycle, the Core Ultra 200 series is a massive overhaul across raw computing power and efficiency when compared against Intel's 11th gen CPUs, offering up to 2.84x higher multicore performance in Cinebench 2024 and nearly 2x faster video editing.

“For commercial, given that four years is kind of the plus/minus refresh cycle, we compared against the 11th gen,” Feng explains. “As you can imagine, massive, massive gain across the board for almost 3x the MT [multithreaded] performance.”

vPro Service updates

But Intel’s vPro systems include more than just powerful commercial hardware. Black letterboxing will flank your videos to fill out the excess space, but this isn’t something that bothers me personally.

HP Dragonfly G4 (Image credit: Future)

I watched the Five Nights at Freddy’s trailer on YouTube. I was particularly taken aback by a scene with Matthew Lillard sitting in an office. As he held a phone to his ear, I was surprised that I could spot subtle, barely perceptible features on his face, from his faint forehead wrinkles to the ultra-tiny papules near his salt-and-pepper beard.

No, it’s not one of the most vivid displays I’ve seen, but it’s not designed to be. Its color rendering is just right. It’s not washed out, but it’s not oversaturated, either. This is proven by the bright-red eviction notice that appeared on the door of Josh Hutcherson’s character — it’s striking enough to catch your eye, but it manages to not be garishly vivid.

Now, let’s take a look at the actual display test results to see if they match my anecdotal experience.

According to our colorimeter, the Dragonfly G4 covered 80.2% of the DCI-P3 color gamut (the same exact figure we got for the G3 last year). This is better than the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 (69.8%), but slips behind the average premium laptop (93.7%) and the spectacular Acer Swift Go 14 (175.7%).

The Dragonfly G4 is elite when it comes to color accuracy. With a Delta-E score of 0.14 (closer to 0 is better), the HP laptop demolished all rivals in its path, including the average premium laptop (0.22), the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (0.22), and the highly inaccurate Swift Go 14 (0.32).

HP says that the Dragonfly G4 can output 400 nits of brightness, and according to our testing, its luminance gets pretty close to that — 391 nits to be exact. This is slightly dimmer than the average premium laptop (394 nits) and the Swift Go 14 (395 nits), but beats the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 11 (327 nits).

HP Dragonfly G4 audio

The Dragonfly G4 is packed with four Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers: two are top-firing while another two are bottom-firing. I launched the Hot Hits USA playlist on Spotify, which played “Mojabi Ghost” by Tainy and Bad Bunny.

HP Dragonfly G4 (Image credit: Future)

The futuristic-sounding song, thanks to the funky synthesizers, sounded rich and full on the G4’s audio system. The drums were punchy and driving, but never overpowered Bad Bunny’s smooth, vibey vocals. As a cherry on top, these speakers can get super loud at max volume — you could host a small party with this laptop if you wanted to.

I opened the HP Audio Control app to see if it could sound better (even though it sounds totally fine). There are four presets: Auto, Music, Movie and Voice. My favorite, of course, is Music, providing a perfect balance between the vocals, baseline, and funky synthesizers.

HP Dragonfly G4 keyboard and touchpad

Cue the wedding bells! I’m a keyboard snob, and man, I love the Dragonfly G4’s keyboard so much I could marry it. HP has always been masterful at delivering satisfying keyboard experiences (I adore the keyboard on the HP Envy 13, for example), and this 13.5-inch notebook proves that its expertise hasn’t wavered.

HP Dragonfly G4 (Image credit: Future)

The island-style keyboard has a white backlight that delivers three levels of brightness, and you’ll find a fingerprint reader between the ALT key and the left arrow. It’s tactile, delivers great travel, and super clicky — it’s as if the keys intuitively know when I’m about to touch them and immediately launch me onto the next letter in nanoseconds.

The Dragonfly G4’s 4.7 x 3.1-inch touchpad is spacious and, on top of that, it has a smooth-as-silk texture that’s damn-near addicting. At the same time, it’s not too slick that it feels like you need to exert a lot of effort to move the cursor — it has the perfect balance of friction and gloss. Plus, Windows 11 gestures, including three-finger tabbing and two-finger scrolling, worked like a charm.

HP Dragonfly G4 performance

Under the hood, the Dragonfly G4 sports an Intel Core i7-1365U vPro CPU and 16GB of RAM. Unfortunately, this lags behind the average premium laptop (7,877) and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 (8,979), which shares the same processor as the HP laptop. The unstoppable Acer Swift Go 14, packed with an Intel Core i7-13700H CPU, delivered a jaw-dropping score of 11,815. (Interestingly, the Go 14 is cheaper than the G4 and the X1 Carbon, but blows its pricier competitors out of the water with its H-series chip, however, the battery life section reveals that this power comes with a price.)

The Dragonfly G4 took 12 minutes and 41 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p, which is slower than the average premium laptop (8 minutes and 33 seconds). It’s also more sluggish than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (9 minutes and 5 seconds) and the Swift Go 14 (5 minutes and 35 seconds).

On the file transfer test, the Dragonfly G4’s 512GB SSD took 37 seconds to copy 25GB of data, which translates to a rate of 735.7 megabytes per second (MBps). Sadly, this is slower than the average premium laptop (1,306.2 MBps), the ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s 512 SSD (1,703.8 MBps), and the Swift Go 14’s 512GB SSD (1,481.1 MBps).

HP Dragonfly G4 graphics and gaming

The HP Dragonfly G4, like its rivals, is outfitted with integrated graphics (Intel Iris Xe). No, it’s not ideal for gaming, but let’s see how well it can handle casual titles like Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. On this test (Medium, 1080p), it produced 25 frames per second. This failed to surpass the average premium laptop’s 50-fps average, but to be fair, laptops with discrete GPUs skew this figure. Are you a video editor who needs extra storage? Are you a power user who wants a beefy GPU? Sorting through the best laptops to fit your lifestyle is a tricky business.

To make your shopping process a little easier, our Editor-in-Chief Sherri L. Smith has put together some tried-and-true guidelines to help you choose the best laptop.

Budget: What you get for the money.

You can find decent Windows laptops and high-quality Chromebooks for under $500. However, better mainstream laptops usually cost more than $700 and premium Ultrabooks can run over $1,000. The best gaming laptops can cost $2.000 and up, but you can play the latest titles at decent frame rates on gaming laptops under $1,000.

Screen Size: 12 to 14 inches for Portability

Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13 or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines and workstations even have 17 or 18-inch screens, but those are hardest to carry.

2-in-1 or Clamshell?

More and more of today's laptops are 2-in-1s with screens that either bend back 360 degrees or detach so you can use them as tablets. If you like the idea of using your laptop in slate mode for drawing, media consumption or just using it standing up, a 2-in-1 could be for you. However, you can often get better features or a lower price by going with a traditional clamshell-style laptop.

Battery Life: 8+ Hours for Portability

Unless you only plan to use your laptop on your desk, battery life matters. Even within the home or office, having plenty of juice enables you to work on the couch or at the conference table, without being chained to the nearest outlet. For the best portability, we recommend getting a laptop that lasted over 8 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. The longest-lasting laptops endure for over 10 hours.

Specs: 1080p / Core i5 / 8GB Are Best Bets

You can spend a lot of time delving into specs, but here are the key components to think about. If you just want really good mainstream performance, go for a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p screen.

How We Test the best HP EliteBook business laptop

We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing — both synthetic and real-world — before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop's display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.

These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop's materials to the feel of its touchpad.

See this page on How We Test Laptops for more details on our benchmarking procedures.

Why Trust Laptop Mag

Laptop Mag reviews over one hundred different laptops every year, from paperweight ultralights to everyday workhorses to lumbering gaming notebooks that scorch the frame rates of even the hottest AAA games. Among the more staggering statistics is that 11th Gen vPro has 8x better AI performance than its predecessor.

We wouldn't read too much into these stats just yet; we hear claims like this all the time — wait for our benchmarking and comparisons to AMD's solutions for a better idea of how they compare.

Intel 11th Gen vPro vs. AMD Ryzen Pro

Again, you shouldn't take too many of Intel's claims to heart. That being said, we'd be remiss not to mention some of the advantages Intel says its chips have over AMD's Ryzen 4000 Pro series.

That includes 1.38x better overall application performance when comparing the 11th Gen Intel Core vPro i7-1185G7 with the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U using the SYSmark 25 benchmark. Using those same processors, Intel says the Core i7 gets 1.24x faster web browsing and 5x better AI performance than the Ryzen 7.

And if Intel's numbers check out, the Core i7 vPro is 1.23x faster when using Office and 1.82x faster with video editing.

Intel 11th Gen vPro connectivity and features

With 11th Gen Intel vPro, business notebooks get the newest connectivity features, including Thunderbolt 4, the latest USB-C standard capable of connecting to multiple 4K monitors, and Wi-Fi 6E for 3x faster theoretical speeds than Wi-Fi 5. I want to emphasize theoretical because getting to those speeds requires the right hardware and service plan.

There are also new features designed to make the actual user experience more fluid, including the ability to quickly log in and improvements to fast charging so you can get 4 hours of juice out of a 30-minute charge. Speaking of battery life, Intel is aiming for these vPro-equipped laptops to get at least 9 hours on a charge, which is more or less our minimum requirement for ultrathin devices.

New security features including Intel Control-Flow Enforcement, which provides hardware-based protection against several classes of attacks like memory safety-based attacks and control flow subversion techniques. There is also Intel Threat Detection Technology for real-time insights on end-user devices for IT admins.

Outlook

Intel 11th Gen vPro is already a hit with laptop vendors as 60 new laptops are set to sport the new processors, some of which will be Intel Evo vPro certified. We already got a close look at the HP EliteBook 840 Aero G8, Microsoft is launching a Surface Pro 7 Plus with 11th Gen vPro, and Lenovo has the redesigned ThinkPad X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga scheduled to launch soon.

We know these chips will arrive in dozens of business laptops in the next few months, but are they as good as Intel says? More importantly, can they outperform AMD's solution and remain competitive against whatever comes next from its biggest rival? We'll find out soon!

Intel unveiled today new 10th Gen Intel Core vPro processors in Core i9, Core i7 and Core i5 variants. These chips are expected to power the next generation of business laptops, from Lenovo ThinkPads to Dell Latitude notebooks.

Intel's announcement comes just days after AMD revealed its Ryzen Pro 4000 chips for enterprise systems. The rival chipmaker made some aggressive claims about how its new processors compare with 10th Gen Intel CPUs. Instead of refuting those claims, Intel is taking a different path by touting improved management and security.

Intel is using four main tenants to promote its new chips: performance, security, manageability and stability. Let's take a closer look at each of these areas to see how it compares to previous chips and AMD's new Ryzen Pro 4000.

Intel 10th Gen vPro performance

Intel was shy about the performance of its new 14-nanometer chips, at least, when compared with AMD, which went right for its rival's throat.

Instead of giving us head-to-head numbers against Ryzen Pro, Intel compared its new 10th Gen CPUs to those from a three-year-old laptop. This might feel artificially inflated but Intel argues that consumers and businesses update their laptops about every three years, so these are the performance changes they'd want to know about.

With that in mind, Intel claims the new vPro chips have 40% better overall performance when compared with a 3-year-old business notebook. They also bring a 36% improvement to "office productivity" and 44% boosts to data analyzing.

These benchmark numbers are fine, but when you're buying a laptop, you'll want to pay attention to the CPU SKU, or model. At the top of the 10th Gen vPro H-series stack is the Intel Core i9-10885H CPU with 8 cores, 16 threads and a base frequency of 2.4Ghz. This specific processor will power only the most premium business notebooks.

One step down gets you either a Core i7-10875H CPU or a Core i7-10850H processor. There is an important distinction to make here: the Core i7-10875H has 8 cores while the Core i7-10850H drops down to six. More affordable business notebooks will likely run on the Core i5-10400H, a 4-core/8-thread CPU with a base frequency of 2.8Ghz.

Intel also updated its U-series 10th Gen vPro CPUs for thin and lightweight notebooks like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon or the HP Elite Dragonfly. The most powerful new chip is the Core i7-10810U CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads. There is a lower-tier Core i7-10610U with 4 cores and 8 threads and a mid-tier chip, the Core i5-10310U, with 4 cores and 8 threads.

Finally, Intel is also updating its Xeon processors. Meant for workstations, the 10th Gen vPro versions of these are the W-10885M (8 core, 16 thread) and the W-10855M (6 core, 12 thread), which have a base frequency of 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz, respectively.

Intel 10th Gen vPro Security

Intel needs to win back the public after several high-profile security vulnerabilities -- including Spectre and Meltdown -- were discovered in certain processors. Step one of regaining the faith of businesses is by beefing up Hardware Shield, a v-Pro specific layer of security that protects against firmware attacks.

The new 10th Gen CPUs will receive advanced threat detection that Intel says will prevent malicious software injections by locking down critical resources. According to Intel, it dynamically ensures the "OS and virtual environment are running directly on Intel hardware shield."

Intel 10th Gen vPro features: Wi-Fi 6 and more

No surprise here. Just like the consumer-grade processors, these vPro chips will support Wi-Fi 6 for faster speeds across more devices and reduced interference.

Wi-Fi 6 supports a theoretical maximum throughput of 9.6GBps under ideal conditions. With that sort of speed, you can have multiple devices streaming 4K video, playing games in VR or browsing the web, all with a home full of smart devices always connected to the network.

Of course, Wi-Fi 6 will only benefit you if you have the equipment (modem and router) and internet plan to support it.

As part of Intel's Project Athena initiative, the 10th Gen vPro CPUs will support instant wake for quickly getting back to work after your laptop goes to sleep. Intel also promises long battery life and systems with various form factors, like 2-in-1 laptops.

Overview

This update was long overdue and now that it's here we can start looking forward to new business laptops with vPro CPUs. The numbers Intel released for these 10th Gen chips suggest small improvements to performance, which could be a problem against AMD's Ryzen 4000 Pro chips. Regardless, we expect most vendors to either stick with Intel, or offer chips from both major chipmakers, on their flagship laptops.
