"How to use Apple Pay on iPhone" is a popular query we've been getting among iOS device owners. Perhaps they've overheard someone ask, "Do you have Apple Pay?" And after getting a yes, they'd whip out their iPhone, swiftly pay for their purchase, and be on their way. And they want to join the fast, contactless payment party, too!

Fortunately, getting set up with Apple Pay on iPhone is easy. Check out our step-by-step guide on how to get started.

How to use Apple Pay on iPhone

Before we dive in, make sure that your iPhone is signed in with the Apple ID you'd like to use with Apple Pay. Once you've done that, follow the steps below to securely pay for items with your iOS device.

1. Open the Wallet app.

2. If you get a prompt asking whether Wallet can use your location, tap Allow While Using App. According to Apple, your location will be used to show relevant passes, set up Apple Pay, improve transaction details, and prevent fraud while making transactions in apps and online.

3. Tap on the plus sign on the top-right corner. (If you're prompted to set up biometric authentication, tap on Set Up Face ID & Passcode).

4. Tap on Debit or Credit Card.

5. Tap on Continue.

6. A viewfinder will appear, allowing you to scan your debit or credit card's details. Once it's scanned, a page with your card details will show up. Tap Next.

7. Enter the expiration date and the security code.

8. Read the Terms and Conditions and tap Agree. Now, you're all set and ready to use Apple Pay.

How to use Apple Pay

Now that you're all set up, you may be wondering, "How do I use Apple Pay while I'm out and about shopping?" Don't worry, we'll tell you how.

1. First thing's first, look for the Apple Pay or contactless payment symbols (see below) at participating stores.

2. When you're near a reader, double-press the side button and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode (depending on your personal settings and device).

3. Hold the top of your iPhone near the reader until the checkmark appears. And that's it! You're ready to go.

Apple's iPhone 14 is set to launch very soon, and while iOS 16 hints at all the new tricks the latest flagship will boast, like Lockdown Mode and editing texts, Apple Pay appears to be another feature set to get an upgrade.

Contributor Stever Mose at MacRumors discovered added Apple Pay support to third-party browsers in the iOS 16 beta 4, allowing iPhone users to Apple's payment system in browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. What's more, a Reddit post also suggests it works on Mozilla Firefox, and this was back in iOS 16 beta 2.

In the tweet, Moser points out that Apple Pay on iOS 15 only works exclusively in Safari, but it's now expanding to other browsers. This means iPhone and iPad users can shop away in other browsers and can use Apple Pay at checkout, which has been a handy feature in Apple's own browser. 

Only on iPhone, not Mac

While Apple Pay support in other browsers is available in the iOS 16 beta, Moser points out that it's unavailable on the macOS versions of Edge and Chrome.

"This doesn’t work in Edge or Chrome on that latest macOS beta because I assume it requires the third party render engines to be updated whereas Edge and Chrome on iOS use Safari’s render engine," Moser states.

This may be due to third-party browsers like Chrome on macOS not using WebKit, Apple's browser engine. While this is used in browsers on iOS and iPadOS, it's not a requirement on macOS. Still, it seems Apple Pay support is set to expand once iOS 16 officially arrives.

Expanded Apple Pay support appears to have been in development for a while, despite the Cupertino-based tech giant now exclusively saying it was in the works during WWDC 2022. As previously mentioned, third-party browser support was spotted in the developer beta 2 over a month ago.

A nasty Apple Pay bug, if exploited, gives hackers access to iPhone users' Visa cards, allowing them to make remote financial transactions using the victim's money. Even if one's phone is locked, malicious actors can still take advantage of this Apple Pay flaw.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham and the University of Surrey approached Visa with their findings, but the credit-card giant snubbed the investigation, concluding that the complex hack is too "impractical" to be concerned about (via BBC).

Apple Pay bug only affects iPhone users with Visa cards

The Apple Pay bug takes advantage of Express Transit, an Apple Pay perk for commuters. Express Transit lets users make easy, contactless Visa payments at travel kiosks and ticket booths. For example, with Express Transit, a user can hurriedly whip out their locked device, touch it against a ticket-gate scanner, pay, and scurry off.

The researchers discovered a weakness in how Visa handles Express Transit transactions. The investigators broke down how this hack could be executed.

• A small piece of radio equipment is placed adjacent to the targeted iPhone, "tricking it" into believing that it is in contact with a ticketing system (the researchers did not specify the type of radio equipment, presumably to prevent copycats).
• An Android phone running an app relays signals from the iOS device to a contactless payment terminal in a store.
• The iPhone believes that it's paying a ticketing system, so it doesn't prompt the user to unlock the device.
• The hacker initiates high-value transactions without needing a pin number, fingerprint or Face ID.

The Android device and payment terminal don't need to be near the target's iPhone. "[They] can be on another continent from the iPhone as long as there's an internet connection" University of Surrey's Dr. Ioana Boureanu told BBC.

According to the BBC, the researchers sent a demo video to the news platform simulating the hack, and the investigators were able to make a $1,350 Visa payment without unlocking the iPhone or authorizing the transaction.

As mentioned, the investigators told Visa about their report, but the company deemed the hack to be too complex. "Variations of contactless fraud schemes have been studied in laboratory settings for more than a decade and have proven to be impractical to execute at scale in the real world," Visa told the researchers.

Apple concurred with Visa. The Cupertino-based tech giant said that it takes threats to users' security very seriously, but noted that the fraud highlighted in the researchers' report is unlikely to take place in the real world, especially with its multi-layer security features.

Although University of Birmingham's Dr. Andreea Radu agrees that the hack is difficult to execute, she's not on board with Apple and Visa's lackadaisical attitude toward the bug. "It has some technical complexity, but I feel the rewards from doing the attack are quite high," Radu said.

It's worth noting that the researchers also tested iPhones with Mastercard setups as well as Samsung Pay, but couldn't manage to hack them.

If you're concerned about the Apple Pay Bug, the researchers suggest disabling the Express Transit feature.

Apple Pay is finally on the web. When it launched on iOS, taking your iPhone to a store and paying with a tap felt like the future. Now, you can online shop with the same ease.

With macOS, you can use Apple Pay from the Safari web browser (sorry, Chrome and Firefox users) to buy from online vendors with a quick tap, as long as you have an iPhone or iPad with Touch ID or Face ID handy. Right now, supported merchants include Time Inc., Lululemon and Warby Parker, with more sure to pile on to make it easy for customers to buy their wares.

Here's how to use Apple Pay with macOS:

 1. Visit a supported Apple Pay merchant. Here, we're using Sports Illustrated, which allows subscriptions through Apple Pay.

2. Click on Apple Pay at checkout.

3. A prompt to authenticate the payment will pop up on your Mac and iPhone.

4. Use Touch  ID or Face ID on your iPhone or iPad to authenticate the payment.

You're all done. Your payment will be made on your credit or debit card, just as if you had used Apple Pay at a terminal in a store.
