  • Best Detachable 2-in-1

    Microsoft Surface Pro

    Editor's Choice

After five years, the company that popularized the category is still the one that makes the best detachable on the market. And after dropping the numbered naming scheme, the Surface Pro is better than ever before. Battery life has gone   up by 1.5 hours, the new Surface Pen features more than 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition and the kickstand bends back even further to 165 degrees. And in case you forgot, the Surface Pro still boasts the best detachable keyboard around and one of the brightest and most accurate LCD screens we've ever seen.

    Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

    Editor's Choice

Dell's bendback hybrid takes its design cues from the XPS 13 clamshell, with a super-svelte profile, a luxurious carbon fibre deck and a nearly bezel-free InfinityEdge display. This attractive 2-in-1 also has a snappy keyboard, a fanless design that makes it completely silent and over 8 hours of battery life.

  • Best 2-in-1 for Creative Pros

Microsoft Surface Book with Performance Base

    Editor's Choice

The Surface Book with Performance Base really is the 2-in-1 that can do it all. Its got an innovative design featuring a clever hinge and detachable display, support for both touch and stylus input and a wonderfully bright and accurate screen. And unlike pretty much every other ultraportable system, 2-in-1 or otherwise, it has a discrete graphics in the form of an Nvidia 965m GPU. That means you get plenty of horsepower to do things like edit videos and make 3D models, and a 9-hour battery life that should see you through the day. While the Surface Book with Performance Base's starting price of $2399 isn't cheap, it is the top choice for creative pros on the go.

Find the Right 2-in-1

If you want a laptop with the most versatility, a 2-in-1 that either bends back or detaches to switch into tablet mode is your best choice. We've listed our favorite 2-in-1s above and here are some things you need to keep in mind when shopping.

  • Bendback or Detachable?: If you plan to use your laptop primarily as a laptop, get a bendback. Bendback 2-in-1s, which have screens that flip back 360 degrees, work far better in laptop mode and usually have greater endurance, a better keyboard and more ports, but they also weigh a bit more and are thicker. Detachable 2-in-1s, which have screens that pop off of their keyboards offer the best tablet experience, but have weaker battery life and a far-worse typing experience.
  • Screen Resolution: While some cheaper models will have 1366 x 768 resolutions, try to get at least a 1920 x 1080 display.
  • Size: For the best balance between portability and usability, consider a 2-in-1 with a 12 or 13-inch display and a weight less than 3.5 pounds. Smaller models with 10 and 11-inch screens are good secondary or kids' computers. Larger convertibles with 15 and 17 inch screens are best used in tent or display modes.
  • Spend More to Get More: You can find a budget-oriented 2-in-1 for under $400, but if you want a truly premium product with strong specs, be prepared to spend over $800.
