Welp, the inevitable happened. After 15 long years of serving me well, my LG TV spitefully died on me just weeks before Black Friday. I can’t say that I’m shocked — in TV years it’s pretty much a fossil and it's high time I upgrade from Full HD to 4K resolution. When the display started flickering like crazy over a month ago, I knew it was time for an upgrade. Adjusting the TV’s backlight setting to fifty percent stopped the flicker, but that it was only a temporary fix.

Although I had already had in mind to buy a new TV, I was hoping it would last until its replacement was installed. For now, I’ve converted my computer monitor into a TV with the Chromecast I pulled from the dead LG TV’s carcass. Nothing is stopping me from catching up on my favorite shows.

Deciding to buy a TV is one thing, but choosing the right one is not as easy as it was 15 years ago. Nowadays, there’s LED, OLED, QLED, mini-LED QLED with either edge- lit, direct lit or full array local dimming backlight technology. At the end of the day all I want is for my next TV to look good and last me another 15 years. 

That said, I narrowed it down to the 55-inch TCL Q7 QLED TV which is now on sale for $499 at Best Buy. It normally costs  $599, so that’s $100 off and the lowest price ever for this TCL QLED TV. This is one of the best value Black Friday TV deals under $500.  I chose this particular model for the 4K 120Hz display panel with HDR Ultra and Google TV Smart OS. By comparison, the cheaper model TCL Q6 QLED has a 4K 60Hz panel and I want a TV that can get the most out of next-gen consoles like the PS5 which supports 4K gaming at 120Hz. The TCL Q7 QLED is further optimized for gaming with 240 variable refresh rate (VRR) for lag-free gameplay.  

As I mentioned earlier, I’d been using a Chromecast with Google TV to make my "dumb" LG TV smart. I’m an Android user and to me, Google TV is easy to use and customize. Additionally, it works seamlessly across my other Google gadgets and Android devices. 

For hundreds less than TCL's $1,300 QM8 mini-LED QLED model, the Q7 will be just as much of a feast for my eyes. Also the QLED panel is suitable for viewing in bright environments and my living gets plenty of sunlight. Full array local dimming provides more vivid color and better contrast. As per sister site Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review, the TCL Q7 QLED TV is the perfect balance of performance and cost.

Prime Day 2023 is in full swing and if you're looking for a TV, we bring good news. Amazon's big sale offers a great chance to get the LG C2 42-inch OLED TV for $796. It normally costs $1199, so that's $403 in savings. It's one of the lowest prices we've seen for this best-selling LG TV and on the best Prime Day TV deals you can get. 

While LG recently launched its C3 model, which is the latest version of this critically acclaimed OLED TV line, it is only marginally better. My obsession with OLED began in 2021 when I played Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on my brother's OLED TV. When I returned to my standard LED TV to continue the playthrough, I was shocked by its flat and shallow color depth. I knew from then on that I was spoiled, so I purchased the LG C1 OLED TV and haven't looked back since.

Purchasing an OLED TV has turned every game, movie and show into a deeply immersive event. And at this point I would rather watch a movie on my TV at home than go out to the theatre. Considering the C2 is even newer than my model, it certainly offers some improvements, but it's important to keep in mind it's not the newest model.

The LG OLED C3 launched this year, but its marginal improvement is certainly not worth the massive price difference, meaning the C2 is absolutely the right choice considering its lower cost. It's also worth keeping in mind that this deal is for the 42-inch model, and you might prefer something larger. Thankfully, the 48-inch is $896.99 and the 55-inch is $1,096.99, which means you're getting a great deal regardless of which you pick.

OLED TVs aren't perfect, however. They're often less bright than QLED or LED TVs, and they also experience stuttering issues. This means that during panning shots in films especially, it will stutter, as if the screen is lagging. These issues are worth keeping in mind if you'd like to invest into OLED technology, but it is absolutely worth it.

Apple TV is one of the best set-top boxes available today. But the remote’s connection can cut out at times, and we’ve got the fix to it right here.

Whether it’s the first or second generation Siri remotes, they are intuitive to use — with all the buttons you need for control (and thankfully, a move away from the weird trackpad UI of the first generation), alongside Siri integration that is able to perform a search for content across all your different streaming services.

However, just like any wireless controller, connectivity issues can pop up and make it unable for you to use your Apple TV. Here are some steps you can follow to reset your remote and get things working again.

Try this first

1. Charge your remote for 30 minutes or more via a wall outlet.

2. Unplug your Apple TV box for at least six seconds, then plug it back in.

3. Ensure you are within 20 feet of your Apple TV box and that nothing is blocking the path between your Apple TV remote and the front of the box. Then try again once your Apple TV has reset.

Chances are this will work for most of you. But if you are still getting connection issues, here is the manual workaround to hard reset your remote.

Restart and pair your Apple TV remote

1. Press and hold the TV button (the one with a TV on it) and the volume down button for about five seconds.

2. You’ll see the Apple TV box restart, at which point you can release the buttons.

3. As the box turns back on, you’ll see a “Connection Lost” notification appear on the TV screen. When your remote restarts, the reconnection should be automatic.

4. If this doesn’t happen, activate manual pairing by pushing the back button and volume up button together for five seconds.

5. This will activate pairing mode and on some models of Apple TV, you may be asked to place the remote on top of the Apple TV box. Once your Apple TV has re-paired with the remote, you will be able to use it again.

Super Bowl TV deals at Best Buy take up to $1,700 off select OLED TVs, just in time for the biggest NFL game of the year. If you want to upgrade your TV for your Super Bowl watch party, it's a great time to score huge savings. The big box retailer is slashing prices on its wide selection of top-rated 55-inch and 65-inch OLED TVs. 

One standout deal is the LG C2 65-inch OLED TV for $1,699. That’s $400 in savings since it typically retails for $2,099. It’s just $3 shy of its all-time low price and one of the top Super Bowl TV deals from the sale. Predecessor to the forthcoming LG G3 unveiled at CES 2023 in early January, the LG C2 is one of the best OLED TVs you can get. It boasts a gorgeous 4K (3,840 x 2,160) OLED Evo panel with 120Hz refresh rate and AI 4K upscaling.

Displace TV, one of the coolest products we've seen at CES 2023, is the world's first wireless television. Yes, you read that correctly. That means you don't have to deal with unsightly wires, but on top of that, Displace TV doesn't have any ports either. Win!

However, unfortunately for Displace, it's not the only company to debut a wireless TV this year. LG also announced the world's first wireless OLED TV. Although Displace and LG TVs ditch the ugly cables, both use different tactics to achieve wireless television nirvana. How? Stick around to find out.

LG wireless TV

LG's wireless TV, officially called Signature OLED M, is a 97-inch visual treat that boasts a 120Hz refresh rate with 4K OLED resolution.

How does it get video and audio delivered to the screen if it's a wireless TV? Good question. The Signature OLED M is paired with a Zero Connect Box, a base station if you will, that must be placed within 30 feet of the TV, allowing you to hide  it anywhere you like.

The Zero Connect Box is a black wireless AV box that features several I/O options, including three HDMI 2.1 ports, allowing you to plug in a wide range of peripherals like gaming consoles, cable boxes, and more.

A full 4K 120Hz picture with audio is transmitted to the display by leveraging a proprietary LG technology. "To ensure the seamless transfer of data from the box to the TV, the company developed an algorithm that instantly identifies the optimal transmission path," LG said in a press release. This swanky technology also minimizes transmission errors by detecting changes in the environment (e.g., people walking by or dogs roaming the room).

LG suggests rotating and/or tilting the box's antenna in a way that aligns with the TV's location for maximum signal strength.

As a cherry on top, the Zero Connect Box features voice activation, so you can turn on and manage LG's wireless TV with spoken commands. Gamers will love that this a G-sync-compatible TV (but I can't help wonder if latency will be an issue). Plus, it features Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for ultra-vivid picture and immersive sound.

No word on pricing nor availability yet.

I got to see the wireless TV in all of its glory inside LG's Las Vegas suite in Mandalay Bay, and I was impressed to see no glitching nor signal disturbances during the demonstration. And let me tell you, the picture on this thing is stunning with eye-catching colors that pop (see above).

Displace wireless TV

LG's facing some stiff competition with the wireless 55-inch Displace TV. No, it's not as massive as the Signature OLED M's 97-inch monstrous display, but weighing less than 20 pounds, it's a lighter option.

Displace TV is a battery-operated device, which uses four hot swappable Lithium-ion batteries for a total watch time of 180 hours. That's nearly six hours a day for a month. Plus, the TV only needs two out of those four batteries to run at full power.

The greatest selling point, however, is that you don't need to figure out how you're going to mount it in your room. Leave the screws, hooks and TV stands alone. On the back of the Displace TV, you'll find the company's proprietary suction system that lets you hang it up anywhere you want, even a window, without any tools or other irksome bits and bobs.

Keep in mind, though, that the suction system runs on the batteries outfitted inside Displace TV, but don't worry, you'll get a notification when your batteries are running low and need to be recharged.

If 55 inches is too small for you, you can snap multiple TVs together for a larger display. For example, you can buy four Displace TVs for a whopping 110-inch display with 8K resolution.

I know what you're wondering, "How does the wireless stuff work on this TV?" Similar to LG, it delivers picture and audio via a base unit that must be plugged into a wall. It's reportedly the size of a PC tower, but I can't say for sure because Displace didn't showcase it at CES 2023.

It's worth noting that, in addition to voice commands, owners can use gesture controls to manage Displace TV.

Bottom line

Although LG and Displace are bragging about their televisions' wireless capabilities, I'm more seduced by the fact that I don't have to ruin my walls nor grab my tools to mount these TVs.

Plus, I don't have to deal with the headache of hiding unsightly wires and cables. If this is the future of TV, I am here for it.

Shantaram, based on Gregory David Roberts’ internationally best-selling novel of the same name, is Apple’s latest TV project set to receive its streaming premiere later this month. What is the plot of Shantaram?

Based on the internationally bestselling novel by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram follows a fugitive named Lin Ford (Charlie Hunnam) looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay. Alone in an unfamiliar city, Lin struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place. After falling for an enigmatic and intriguing woman named Karla, Lin must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.

Is Shantaram based on a true story?

Apple TV+’s Shantaram is based on the book of the same name by author Gregory David Roberts. It’s no secret that Roberts has something of a chequered past, but the similarities between his own experiences and that of the book’s protagonist Lin have led some to believe the book is more fact than fiction.

Parts of the novel are clearly inspired by real-life events with Lin, as Roberts was, being incarcerated in Australia for a series of armed robberies before escaping and fleeing to India where he lived for ten years. At this point in the novel, the line between fact and fiction is a topic of much debate. While Roberts insists the characters in the novel are entirely created and bear no resemblance to any real persons, certain individuals mentioned are very much real and are known to have associated with Roberts during his time in India.

Given the nature of the events that occur in the novel, some have likened it to a quasi-confession by Roberts — framed as fiction in such a way to shield himself from any potential blowback. Others believe the story to be largely sensationalized, with Roberts blending the narrative with his own lived experiences — resulting in a story that is authentic, but perhaps less than factual.

The latter of which is seemingly how Roberts wishes to present his work, saying the following in a 2015 interview:

“Some experiences from my life are described pretty much as they happened, and others are created narratives, informed by my experience. I wanted to write two or three novels on some bare elements from my life, allowing me to explore the themes that interested me, while keeping the narrative immediate by anchoring it to some of my real experiences.”

In fact, three years after the book's release in 1994, Flanagan was convinced that The Midnight Club would become his first film project.

What is the plot of The Midnight Club?

The Midnight Club is a horror anthology series that follows a group of terminally ill young adults residing in the Rotterdam Home hospice. As with the Christopher Pike novel it's based on, the group meets at midnight every night to tell each other stories of the supernatural and unknown.

While the original novel had the teens tell a selection of unique stories, the show will instead transplant abridged versions of Pike’s other works in their place. Each of these stories will make up the meat of each episode. However, there will be several overarching plots for the group to explore in between tales, most notably of which comes from a pact the group makes one night while meeting.

With each teen not expecting to outlive their illnesses, there’s a need for reassurance about what happens after. It’s then that the group forms their pact: the first of them to pass on should make every effort to reach out to the others — from beyond the grave.

When will The Midnight Club be released?

Following Netflix’s usual release pattern, all ten episodes of The Midnight Club will release exclusively to the platform on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022. Each episode runs between 40 and 60 minutes in length, meaning there’ll be upwards of six to seven hours (6.66 hours to be exact) of creepy content to enjoy on the day. The show’s first season will be made available to stream in all regions from midnight PT, 3 a.m. ET, 8 a.m. BST, and 7 p.m. AET.

Werewolf by Night is the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest TV offering and an ode to classic horror features from the 1930s and 40s. While some have said that Marvel’s recent offerings are a little “too samey”, the black and white, 53-minute special presentation of Werewolf by Night is seemingly anything but. With Halloween on the horizon, Marvel may have served up the ideal companion for a witching-hour watch-along. How many more monsters will be revealed and just where this new path of the MCU leads to remains to be seen. However, if Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige is to be believed, don’t expect this to be the last time that Marvel showcases its darker side.

Werewolf by Night will premiere on Disney+ as part of the platform’s third annual “Hallowstream” celebration on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022. The freaky festivities will continue throughout October with a slew of spooktacular content, both old and new, taking over the platform in the lead-up to Halloween. The 53-minute one-shot will be available on Disney+ in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia from 12 a.m. PT (3 a.m. ET), 8 a.m. BST, and 5 p.m. AET respectively.

On a dark and somber night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. Not much is known about what to expect as Abbott Elementary heads into its sophomore season. However, what we do know tells us that show creator, writer, and star Quinta Brunson is hoping to recreate the magic of the show’s award-winning debut while aiming to keep things fresh. In an interview with Elle earlier this year, Brunson let a few details slip about what she and fellow cast members would like to see in season 2.

Brunson herself would love to see the teachers on more field trips; Sheryl Lee Ralph wants her character Barbara Howard to start a Sister Act 2-esque choir; Lisa Ann Walter wants her character Melissa Schemmenti, and the rest of the staff, to attend a teaching convention; and Tyler James Williams hopes for more of the will-they-won’t-they romance between his character Gregory Eddie and Brunson’s Janine Teagues.

Just how many of these ideas translate into actual episodes? We don’t know yet. However, ABC was kind enough to release the following synopsis for season 2’s opening episode “Development Day”:

“The teachers are back at Willard R. Abbott Public School for development week, a time to prepare for the upcoming year before the students’ first day of school. Post-breakup, Janine is determined to start the year off right and leave her problems at home. With this new outlook, she takes on organizing the faculty mixer and announces a special celebrity surprise she planned for the kids’ first day.
