Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, the company's best new tablet, so naturally, we're going to pit it up against Apple's iconic iPad Pro 12.9. Let's see which is the best tablet.

We don't have all the testing done yet, so this is just a sneak peek (we'll have a 100% accurate face-off at a later date). However, Apple has been the king of tablets for a long time, both in consistency and quality. Although, you are paying a boatload of money for the best.

Here's a brief look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. Apple iPad Pro 12.9.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Price

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra starts at $1,199, which includes an S Pen, while the Apple iPad 12.9 starts at $1,099 and does not include any of its accessories.

The Galaxy Tab S9 starts with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but the iPad Pro starts with 16GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If you're getting the base model, you have to decide what you want more — RAM or storage (performance vs. space).

While this is perhaps the only occasion where the iPad Pro 12.9-inch offers a cheaper starting price, if you were to match the storage of the two the price is identical at $1,199. I still may lean toward the iPad Pro winning if it weren't for the addition of the S Pen with the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, while the Apple Pencil 2 is $129. Factoring all of that we're calling it a draw between these pricey portables.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Design

Ah, yes, the age old question of which nearly identical metal slate looks better? There's not a lot of style that goes into the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra or iPad Pro 12.9 unfortunately, so we're going to talk about function or form... well, maybe a little form

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra or iPad Pro 12.9 both have a sleek metallic design, with the former offering Beige and Graphite color schemes and the latter featuring Space Gray and Silver. This comes down to personal preference, but I hate them both.

When it comes to size and weight, the iPad Pro (1.5 pounds, 11.0 x 8.5 x 0.25 inches) is lighter than the Tab S9 Ultra (1.61 pounds, 12.85 x 8.21 x 0.21 inches), but the Ultra is thinner. And since there's a massive display size difference, the iPad is overall more portable.

However, that's not why I am choosing the iPad Pro as the victor here. Like I said, it's about form over function. And there doesn't seem to be a way to attach the S Pen to the Galaxy Tab directly, while the Apple Pencil can magnetically attach and charge to the iPad Pro.

Winner: iPad Pro 12.9

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Display

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra comes in with a 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X (60~120Hz) panel, whereas the iPad Pro 12.9 offers a 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR (2732 x 2048) display. Unfortunately, it's not clear what the Tab S9 Ultra's resolution is going to be.

The Apple iPad clocks in with 591 nits of brightness and 82.4% DCI-P3 coverage. Meanwhile, we don't have exact numbers for the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra because we haven't tested it yet. However, both tablets support stylus pens.

We don't have all the information, so this is a little difficult, but what we can say right now is that bigger is often better.

Winner: Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Cameras

When it comes to cameras, size matters, but it also doesn't. It's a mix between who has the biggest lens and who has the better software, which makes the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9 fight complicated.

Samsung has more lenses and they're slightly bigger, featuring a 12MP and 12MP UW on the front as well as a 13MP AF and 8MP UW on the rear. However, Apple offers one 12MP on the front as well as a 12MP and 10MP UW on the rear. Despite a whole camera difference, Apple phones are renowned for its stellar camera software. 

It's impossible to judge this from afar, but since this isn't a final test, I'm going to give it to Samsung for now. More and bigger lenses win.

Winner: Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Performance

Samsung is launching the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and that's going up against the Apple's M2 chip. Technically, we've tested both of these chips. Let's see how they rock.

On the Geekbench 5 benchmark, the Apple M2 scored 8,500, while the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 5,081. There's no shot that Samsung can take this away from Apple.

Obviously, this isn't the most accurate reading, since these results come from the a smartphone versus a tablet, but it doesn't look good for Samsung.

Winner: iPad Pro 12.9

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs. iPad Pro 12.9: Battery life

On our battery test, the iPad Pro 12.9 lasted 10 hours and 40 minutes with a 10,758mAh battery. What does that mean for Samsung?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra sports a 11,200mAh battery, which is only a ~500mAh difference. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab S9 has a larger screen, so it's consuming more battery, and Apple has been the king of battery life for a while now. Unless Samsung can do a 180, this goes to Apple.

Winner: iPad Pro 12.9

Outlook

We can't decide an official winner at this point, but the larger display and more affordable all-in price with accessories would almost have to be the tipping point for the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. Once we get Samsung's latest tablet through our lab, we'll have definitive answers. I hope Samsung can bring competition because no one likes a monopoly. Well, Apple does in this case. At the very least, the one thing that Apple can't beat Samsung on is more cameras and a bigger display.

The Galaxy Tab S9 lineup is here and we got a chance to spend a little time with Samsung's updated tablet trio ahead of the announcement. There's a lot of shared DNA between the three, so while it is hard not to focus on the 14.6-inch behemoth at  the top, I'll be taking a brief look at all three models.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: Design

Outwardly the Galaxy Tab S9 series looks very similar to the Galaxy Tab S8 lineup from 2022, but there are a number of updates under their Armor Aluminum skin. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the Galaxy Tab S9 series remains gorgeous. While the 14.6-inch Ulta still seems like it might be more tablet than I need in my life, all three Tab S9 models are improbably thin-and-light given their relative sizes. 

And while the black or silver aluminum may feel a little basic, Samsung adds a little interest to it with the oval area for the S Pen on the back and thin lines ringing the back of the tablets to avoid the feeling that they just completely punted on design.

Much like the foldables, one of the more notable upgrades to the design of the Galaxy Tab S9 tablets this year is enhanced durability. Now boasting an IP68 rating, users can feel comfortable toting their Galaxy Tab S9 to the beach or by the pool without concern that dust or water will cut short the life of their tablet.

Another internal upgrade is a 20% boost to the size of the quad-speaker array, we were in a crowded space with horrendous acoustics for our hands-on, so we'll need to withhold judgment until we have our review unit, but as the Tab S8 speakers were already quite good it sounds promising anyway.

I'll never stop wishing there was a way for Samsung to fit a silo for the S Pen into the Galaxy Tab, but the math just doesn't work out, so you'll either need to pick up a case with a silo or like me you will repeatedly find your S Pen in the bottom of your bag after it got knocked from its magnetic perch on the tablet in transit.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: Display

We'll need to get the Galaxy Tab S9 into our labs for a scientific analysis of their performance, so for now I can only say that all three look fantastic with the base model Galaxy Tab S9 upgrading from an LCD to join the rest of the models with Super AMOLED 2X.

Even in the aggressively lit space we were in for our hands-on, all three of the Galaxy Tab S9 models were easily able to overcome the lighting and remain clearly visible whether displaying a webpage or watching a YouTube video. 

The dynamic refresh rate on the displays ranges from 60Hz to 120Hz, so you aren't consuming too much power when you are just looking at relatively static content.

Samsung can do virtually no wrong in the display space these days and while we'll wait for the official ruling from our testing lab, it doesn't seem like the Galaxy Tab S9 will break that streak.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: Performance

We didn't have enough time for the Galaxy Tab S9 to really put it through its paces, but scrolling around websites, multitasking, and bouncing between apps at high-speed were all well within the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powered wheelhouse for the Galaxy Tab S9.

Given what we've seen on much more thermally constrained devices, we are expecting incredible benchmarks and real-world performance from the Tab S9. Samsung specifically touted the new custom vapor chamber design, claiming that it is the "most heat-efficient Galaxy Tab lineup ever...." They certainly didn't get hot while we were using them, but we'll see how that holds up to benchmarking, gaming, and other rigorous tasks.

I don't think the Apple Silicon-powered iPad has anything to fear, but it seems a safe bet that these will be at the pinnacle of Android performance.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: Cameras

The Galaxy Tab S9+ and Tab S9 Ultra both feature a 13MP primary and 8MP ultrawide camera, while the Tab S9 is limited to the 13MP primary. The Tab S9 and Tab S9+ offer a 12MP ultrawide front-facing camera, while the Tab S9 Ultra adds a secondary wide-angle 12MP front-facing camera to that.

We'll put the cameras through their paces, but if you have a Galaxy S phone released in the last 5 years it has better cameras than these tablets, so please do not rely on them for anything more than video chats or scanning documents.

Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra: Software

While we often find that trying to use a tablet as a laptop replacement is a flawed notion, Samsung certainly does more than perhaps any other manufacturer to try to make that dream a reality. Whether it's DeX Mode to give you a full PC layout, multi window to give you up to 3 apps at once, or Pop-up View to give you a windowed experience, there are a multitude of ways to try to get more done on the Tab S9.

If you are looking to augment rather than replace your laptop you also have Second Screen which will let you mirror or extend your PC on your tablet, and safe bet the Galaxy Tab S9 has your laptop display beat.

Outlook

The Galaxy Tab S9 feels and looks amazing, but that was true of the previous generation as well. We're excited to spend a little more time with the Galaxy Tab S9 to see if Google's labor in revitalizing the Android tablet ecosystem is bearing any fruit for Samsung.

However, particularly at their new higher price point starting at $799, $999, and $1,199 respectively for the Tab S9, S9 Plus and S9 Ultra, it seems like an uphill battle to win over tablet buyers that still mostly default to the iPad. However if anyone on the Android side has the brand loyalty to make that happen it's Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE Plus tablets have seemingly been revealed over a week ahead of their predicted Samsung Galaxy Unpacked official unveiling – and Samsung’s fan editions look set to be real crowd pleasers.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked will take place for the first time in Seoul, South Korea on July 26, 2023 and will likely see the official reveal of Samsung’s latest Galaxy smartphones, foldables, and tablets. Those among the expected lineup include the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9.

That all makes for a pretty stacked event, but it’s entirely possible Samsung has even more to show off – including a range of Fan Edition devices starting with the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE and now including the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE Plus.

We’ve been granted our first look at the latter two devices thanks to rendered images supplied by reputable, and historically accurate, tech tipster @OnLeaks in collaboration with @MediaPeanutBlog and @WolfOfTablet. So how do they look, and how do they compare?

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE: How does it look? 

Renders of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE indicate that the tablet will retain the familiar Galaxy Tablet design of old while sporting a 10.9-inch display with slim bezels for a near edge-to-edge aesthetic, a single elevated rear camera with space to dock the magnetic S Pen below it, dual speakers for stereo audio, and a volume rocker with a separate optical fingerprint reader on the side of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus: How does it look? 

When comparing the renders of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus we see a larger 12.4-inch display with similarly trim bezels, two elevated rear cameras above the magnetic S Pen holder, dual speakers for stereo audio, and a similar optical fingerprint reader and volume rocker on the side.

The FE Plus exhibits the same minimalist design as previous Galaxy Tab devices, keeping the primary focus on that larger screen without too much distraction.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus rumored specifications: 

Of the little we know about these two devices it would appear that both will likely sport an Exynos 1380 chipset, something that will no doubt divide fans who are clamoring for Samsung to leave the SoC behind in favor of the superior QualComm Snapdragon chips found in other lineups. 

Traditionally Exynos chipsets were implemented in most Samsung devices outside of the US, South Korea, and Singapore, however there’s no word if the inclusion of an Exynos chipset is location based or expected across the board as of yet.

Recent Geekbench 6 sightings for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE Plus have seemingly confirmed that both tablets will sport the same processor, as well as the FE Plus offering at least one variant with 8GB of RAM. Beyond this, in terms of specifications at least, things appear to be pretty similar beyond the S9 FE Plus’ secondary camera and larger 12.4-inch display.

Rough estimates on the size of each device has been provided from the CAD renders that see the smaller Galaxy Tab S9 FE with its 10.9-inch display measure in at 9.9 x 6.5 x 0.25 inches, while the larger Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus will reportedly measure 11.23 x 7.29 x 0.25 inches in size.

Outlook

With the iPad’s continued dominance, the launch of the Pixel Tablet, and foldable devices becoming increasingly popular, there seems to be a real thirst for larger screen devices at the moment. While that means more competition for these tablets to go head-to-head with, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 FE devices will have the Fan Edition price point on its side.

With many people’s purse strings feeling tight at the minute and many high-end tablets touting tall price tags Samsung’s revival of the Fan Edition range of devices could be a stroke of genius on the brand’s behalf, offering mid-range flagship phones and tablets at budget-friendly prices.

Will we see these two tablets make an appearance at this year’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event? It’s hard to say. A big stage reveal of the entire FE range of devices would go some way to getting the word out about Samsung’s affordable options, but they may also want to keep the spotlight firmly on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 – potentially pushing back the announce and reveal of its budget-friendly devices until August or September of 2023.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra design and cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 will feature an 11-inch screen and measure at 5.9mm thick and 1.10 pounds in weight with a 13MP rear and 12MP ultra-wide front camera.

The Galaxy Tab S9+ will be outfitted with a 12.4-inch display, measuring at an even trimmer 5.7mm in thickness and 1.3 pounds in weight and housing a rear camera array that includes 13MP and 8MP ultra-wide sensors along with a front facing 12MP ultra-wide lens.

Finally the Galaxy Tab Ultra will house a massive 14.6-inch panel and weigh in at 1.62 pounds, all while remaining just 5.5mm thick. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra will feature front and rear camera arrays that house a 12MP and 12MP ultra-wide duo, and a 13MP and 8MP ultra-wide set of sensors, respectively.

The trio of devices will feature an IP68 rating (that also applies to the included S Pen) making them water resistant in fresh water for up to 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1.5 meters. They'll also be safe from dust and particulate intrusion, allowing you to worry less about your tablet if it's out of a case, or you're caught short in the rain.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Samsung have gone to great lengths in order to manage thermal build up within each tablet during prolonged or heavy usage. A new vapor chamber disperses heat widely across the surface to better avoid heat spikes and performance throttling while in use.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra specifications 

Each newly announced member of the Galaxy Tab S9 family will be powered by a mighty Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor for exceptional performance and multitasking capabilities. It's the same chipset that will also find a home in the newly announced Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, bringing top-tier gaming and creative potential right the way across Samsung's Galaxy range of devices.

Galaxy Tab S9 Series models announced at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked will also feature Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels that deliver bright, crisp, and vibrant pictures with incredible smoothness thanks to a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Configurations of Samsung's Android tablets will cap out at 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for the Galaxy Tab S9, 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for the Galaxy Tab S9+, and and whopping 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. However, each model is equipped with MicroSD card support for up to 1TB of additional storage.

Bottom line 

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series is an outstanding lineup of Android tablets that delivers on every front. Its new display and processor ensure that performance and visuals will be paramount in the user experience. While there's a noticeable price bump, it equates to a sizable upgrade in specifications that won't leave anyone feeling short changed.
