Its 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and dual QHD (5,120 x 1440) resolution are ideal for fast, smooth, high-definition gaming.

However, this deal goes the extra mile, bundling the typically $300 27-inch, curved (1000R) Samsung Odyssey G55C in for free, a monitor that's pretty impressive in its own right, boasting a 165Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time, and a QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution.

This kind of offer turns a deal into a steal, and if you want my advice, it's well worth taking advantage of Samsung's generosity before they have any second thoughts.

Today's best Samsung Odyssey G9 49-inch curved gaming monitor Memorial Day deal

There’s been a debate about how many frames you could reasonably see on a gaming monitor as more manufacturers are turning up the dial on refresh rates, and Acer just threw the gauntlet with its new Acer Nitro XV240 F6 clocked in at a whopping 600Hz.

I remember when we were shocked by 360Hz screens back in 2020, but I saw that difference first-hand. I am a bit skeptical about seeing a difference at 600Hz. Even if there is a difference, is that enough to actually give you an advantage?

I don’t think the average gamer should remotely consider something like this, for a number of reasons I’ll get into, but this is definitely for someone. Here’s what we know about the Acer Nitro XV240 F6.

Is 600Hz even visible?

Before we get into it, let’s look at what Acer is actually offering here. The Acer Nitro XV240 F6 is a 24.1-inch, 1920 x 1080, 600Hz, TN display with a 0.1-millisecond response time.

For those who don’t remember what a TN panel is, it’s just about the worst-looking LCD panel, compared to VA and IPS. Why would Acer dare choose this for a $700 gaming monitor? (That’s right, it’s $700.) Well, TN offers the fastest performance, so it makes sense to opt for this panel, since this monitor is designed for speed.

Acer claims that the monitor gets 350 nits of brightness and covers up to 90% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. That’s actually quite impressive. In terms of V-Sync technology, it features AMD FreeSync, which is compatible with both Nvidia and AMD GPUs.

So with that stated, is 600Hz even visible? A report published in 2015 found that humans can technically perceive up to 500Hz under the right conditions, especially when a display includes high-frequency spatial edges (sharpness). But that’s just picking up flicker artifacts. What about gaming?

Maybe someone could see it, but is the average gamer actually taking advantage of this? And what about 600Hz? The study tested up to 1,000Hz, so it doesn’t seem like Acer's monitor is in the cards.

Seems like you'd need to have Predator-like senses to really use this thing, but the closest you'll get to that is covering your monitor in mud.

Another issue is graphics — modern GPUs, even the RTX 50-series with DLSS 4 enabled, struggle to achieve that high of a frame rate in AAA games.

Overall, I don’t think the average competitive gamer should buy one of these gaming monitors. A monitor with this high refresh rate should be reserved for serious esports players. I’m not saying it's necessary — nothing is going to change if you suck or not, but you should take every advantage you can get.

Normal folk, you might be able to experience something like this at esports events. Otherwise, you can look at the other gaming monitor that Acer announced: The Predator XB323QK V4.

The Predator XB323QK V4 is a 31.5-inch, 4K/160Hz or 1080p/320Hz, IPS gaming monitor with a 0.5-millisecond response time. Rocking dual-refresh rates isn’t very common, so it’s cool to see that you can get the best of both worlds if you go this route. Ironically, it's dimmer than the Nitro, at 250 nits of brightness, but it does feature slightly more color, at 95% DCI-P3. Unfortunately, there’s no pricing and availability for the U.S., so you might not actually see it at all here.

You know what is available in the U.S.? The Acer Nitro XV240 F6. It costs $700, and we’ll see it launch in North America sometime in May.

Alienware's 2025 monitor lineup is slowly filling out.

We've seen the 27-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) earlier this Spring, and now we have the refreshed flagship 34-inch curved QD-OLED.

The Alienware 34 240Hz QD-OLED (AW3425DW) features the new AW30 design, a 240Hz refresh rate, a 3440 x 1440p resolution, and a 1800R curve for complete immersion.

And it's only $799.

But is it worth your money? Let's take a deeper look at those specs.

What's new with the 34-inch Curved QD-OLED?

Unlike the previous version (AW3423DW), the new 34 QD-OLED has a higher 240Hz refresh rate. The previous model was just 175Hz. It's also got a faster response time at 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GTG), as the previous model featured a 0.1ms GTG response time.

Alienware has also updated the ports to include HDMI 2.1 FRL (fixed rate link) for better audio-video signals.

The AW3425DW also features AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility, plus VESA AdaptiveSync. So no matter what hardware you're using, you've got the best possible refresh rate synchronization between your computer's GPU and the 34-inch monitor. The previous model only featured Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate.

Additionally, this year's 34-inch curved flagship monitor comes with the flashy new AW30 design language, with the opalescent blue colorway, 360-degree ventilation, plus better ergonomics and space efficiency.

So there's some serious updates with this new model. The question is: the price.

Is $799 too expensive for a 1440p monitor?

Alienware has two very similar 34-inch curved monitors. The new Alienware AW3425DW and the AW3425DWM. Both are 3440 x 1440p resolution monitors featuring the new AW30 design.

The key differences between those two monitors is display panel type, refresh rate, and response time. The $399 AW3425DWM monitor is a VA (Vertical Alignment) type panel with a 180Hz refresh rate and a 2ms GTG peak response rate. So it's a pretty solid gaming monitor for those on a budget. VA display panels display deep blacks and feature high contrast ratios.

However, the $799 AW3425DW is a QD-OLED panel which is better for immersive, HDR gameplay with accurate colors, higher peak brightness, and an infinite contrast ratio. So it's a more premium viewing experience, and thus come with a more premium price tag.

Personally, I always tend to go for the higher-spec tech because it means I'll need to upgrade less often. But if you don't have a spare $799 and want a quality Alienware 34-inch monitor, you've at least got options. The AW3425DWM is currently on sale for just $369, making it an even better bargain.

We’ve all been talked at before. All sorts of colorful information is pointed directly at us, sometimes with the energy of a hairdryer. That’s sort of how gaming monitors have been.

With their incredible pixel density, high refresh rate, brilliant color, and eye-squinting brightness, these big rectangles are a one-way communication cannon.

After experiencing Samsung’s new Odyssey 3D monitor, I realized it gaming monitors don't have to be this way. What's on your monitor can feel more like an immersive, visual conversation — and not a blaring, optical broadcast.

The 27” Samsung Odyssey 3D monitor offers three-dimensional experiences that floored me when I went hands-on with it earlier this month. The images from video games or 2D movies floated off the screen and into my world — no 3D glasses required.

Two stereo cameras with lenticular lenses are embedded in the top bezel of the monitor to do the eye tracking, and the images pop off your screen. That’s the short version.

The slightly longer version is that the cameras that were tracking my eyes sent those images into an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, which was connected to a Maingear gaming rig with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor.

And those 3D visuals only come to life if you have the Samsung Reality Hub app running.

In sum, this powerful experience is still at the high end for gaming monitors. While the minimum GPU required to operate the Odyssey 3D monitor is the now affordable Nvidia RTX 3080, which was launched in September of 2020, nothing about this brilliant bit of future tech says "budget." (But that's never been the point with brilliant bits of future tech.)

What's the future of 3D monitors?

A company official tells us that Samsung's 3D monitor is easy to be in awe of, and the company is optimistic about its future and 3D tech more generally.

"Samsung is bullish about the future of 3D monitor technology, as our studies have shown that more gamers are expecting the next generation of games to be more immersive and realistic," David You, Head of Product Marketing, Monitors, Samsung Electronics America, tells Laptop Mag.

"To capitalize on this growing demand, we are developing partnerships with key gaming studios such as Nexon and Round8 to offer our consumers 3D gaming experiences for top gaming titles such as Khazan and Lies of P and are working closely with other gaming studios to launch dozens of more titles by the end of this year.

"Samsung’s Odyssey 3D Monitor can also convert non-DRM protected video (YouTube) from 2D to 3D, expanding the use case for 3D monitor technology beyond just games."

Two ways this 3D monitor feels different than the 3D you're used to

The result of the Odyssey 3D monitor, though, is stunning. The 3D monitor concept isn’t new, nor is Samsung the first to bring this technology to market. But in isolation, the way the screen can suck you in will have you in awe.

If you grew up going to 3D movies — whether it was seeing Michael Jackson in Captain EO at Epcot or watching a swarm of bees fly off the screen in Jackass 3D — there are two main differences I noticed in experiencing the Odyssey 3D monitor:

1. You aren’t wearing glasses. Particularly if you already wear glasses like me, this is tremendous.

2. You are in control. You can rewind to move your avatar in a game, and even to dial down the 3D or crank it up. 3D can be a bit unnerving. Being able twiddle the knobs helps.

As for performance, a Samsung rep tells Laptop Mag that the Odyssey 3D won't set records.

“It will never be the fastest monitor in our lineup. It’s not for everybody, but it’s a unique piece that’s cutting edge for people who want future technology.”

At launch, Samsung says the Odyssey 3D monitor supports the games listed below — many of which are slow-burning, deeply immersive, and artful.

If you try to play Cyberpunk 2077 on the Odyssey 3D and expect similar performance as you might get on the also-new, souped-up, 240Hz Samsung 27" Odyssey OLED G8, don't say we didn't warn you.

Samsung’s not alone in the 3D monitor market. Lenovo also offers a 27-inch 3D monitor — its ThinkVision display — that also uses cameras for eye-tracking, but a 3D engine embedded in the monitor makes it a bit more versatile for different computers.

That also means that 3D gaming on the ThinkVision — marketed to professionals and designers — may be difficult, if not impossible.

For example, the ThinkVision display has a 60Hz max refresh rate, while the Odyssey 3D monitor maxes out at 165Hz.

The talk isn't cheap

While this monitor offers an immersive experience that feels like a visual conversation, it turns out this kind of talk isn't cheap.

While there are a slew of discounts and add-ons that bring down the final cost significantly, the preorder price as of Wednesday, April 16, is $1,999.

What else did Samsung release?

In addition to the Odyssey 3D monitor, Samsung also released two other monitors.

There is the 27” Odyssey OLED G81SF gaming monitor, an update to the previous generation with an OLED screen and a 240Hz refresh rate. Samsung claims it's the "industry's first" 4K OLED gaming monitor.

The monitor features 166 PPI (pixels per inch) across its 27-inch size. Pair that PPI with a 4K UHD display, and you have specs that result in an incredible gaming experience.

The glare-reduction technology is also quite noticeable with the matte appearance we've come to expect. But in my viewing, this didn't seem to reduce to vivid colors of Cyberpunk 2077, and the OLED screen made it easy to spot the finest differences between black and very black in the dark corners of the game.

It starts at $1,299, and Samsung is offering a $300 credit as of this writing.

Samsung also released the 49" Odyssey G91F, a curved ultra-wide monitor that offers a split-screen feature for side-by-side gaming. It's a lower-priced option than the other 49" Odyssey monitors — it starts at $999, and you get a $300 Samsung credit.

When you compare this new 49" monitor to its higher-end sibling, the Odyssey OLED G9 Gaming Monitor G93SC, it's easy to understand the price difference. This new 49" monster doesn't have an OLED panel, and its 144Hz refresh rate isn't close to the 240Hz refresh rate. That said, an ultra-wide Samsung monitor for $999 — whether you're a gamer or not — is nothing to be sniffed at.

More than a decade ago, 3D TVs were all the rage thanks to the rise of 3D movies. Then they quickly faded away, as few people were willing to spend the money on a gimmick that required glasses to even make use of it.

But it looks like 3D displays are back, at least for computer monitors.

Samsung opened preorders for its 27-inch Odyssey 3D G90XF 4K 165Hz gaming monitor, and it's doing something remarkable. Instead of just displaying 3D visuals from a 3D source like a movie, it can convert almost all content, whether it be games or videos, into 3D. And it's all done without the use of 3D glasses. There is, however, a catch.

The first big catch is that the computer hooked up to the Odyssey 3D G90XF must have an Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card or better. For games, the computer must also have Samsung's Reality Hub app installed as well. And lastly, the content can't be DRM-protected.

The 3D technology uses AI to add depth to a video or game. As for how it works without glasses, the front panel of the monitor features a lenticular lens. This tracks a user's eye movement and constantly adjusts the image to give the 3D depth perception.

Samsung says it's working with game developers to make use of the technology. Two titles the tech works with are The First Berserker: Khazan, which came out last month, and Lies of P. DLC Overture, which should be out later this year.

Even without the 3D technology, the Odyssey 3D G90XF still has the features of a high-end gaming monitor, with 165Hz refresh rate, 4K resolution, and 1ms response time. It also comes with a big price tag, although Best Buy does have the price at $2,000.

3D is all the rage again.

Samsung isn't the only company coming out with 3D monitors.

Acer showed off its SpatialLabs 3D technology at last year's Computex, while Lenovo has its ThinkVision 27 3D Glasses-free monitor. It remains to be seen if these monitors will win over gamers who are willing to drop two grand on a monitor.

Those prices, however, might be going up thanks to tariffs. On April 2, President Donald Trump announced a series of tariffs on countries the U.S. trades with, causing a global economic panic that cratered markets.

Trump has since changed his stance by putting a pause on tariffs for certain countries, with China being the big exception. Tariffs on China increased to 145%.

On Friday evening, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection released a list of products excluded from the tariffs that includes smartphones, laptops, and computer monitors. However, on Sunday morning, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told ABC News that those products being excluded from tariffs is temporary.

Alienware has made high-quality gaming products for most of the company’s history. So, we tend to have high expectations for Alienware’s products, from desktops and laptops to keyboards and monitors.

Alienware’s latest 27-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor doesn't break from that history, featuring the world’s highest pixels per inch in any OLED or QD-OLED monitor. We first saw this monitor at CES 2025, but it only started shipping last month. This 27-inch gaming monitor features a vibrant, glossy QD-OLED panel with a smooth 240Hz refresh rate, a gorgeous redesign with an opalescent blue colorway, sturdy hinges, and bright HDR.

While the QD-OLED panel’s SDR brightness could be better, the only thing really holding the Alienware 27 4K monitor back is its relatively high price tag. But will that keep it from becoming one of the best monitors or best gaming monitors?

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Price and configurations

Monitors rarely come in multiple configurations, and the Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) is no exception. For $899, you get a 27-inch, 3840 x 2160, 240Hz QD-OLED display with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync support and a 0.03ms response time.

Alienware does offer other gaming monitor options, including last year’s 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) with a 360Hz refresh rate for the same price of $899. Alternatively, you could size up to the 32-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW3225QF) with a 240Hz refresh rate for $1,199.

All three Alienware QD-OLED monitors are available now through Dell.

While the AW2725Q is a bit pricey, it’s not exactly out of the ordinary considering Alienware’s usual pricing. If anything, the price of the 27 4K just calls the 2K model’s price tag into question. Sure, the AW2725DF 2K model offers a higher 360Hz refresh rate, but the fact that both monitors cost $899 just makes the 4K 240Hz version feel like a bargain.

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Setup

Alienware didn’t get too fancy with the setup of this 27-inch 4K monitor. The box includes the stand base, armature, and display panel as three separate parts. The arm screws into the bottom of the base with a built-in screw, and the display panel features a standard VESA mount.

Out of the box setup should take about 15 to 20 minutes between physically setting up the monitor and going through the setup process to get it connected to your gaming PC.

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Design

Alienware updated the design language for its monitors to fit in with the new AW30 aesthetic. The new Alienware design first debuted at CES, focused around the new Area-51 laptops, with a new colorway that mimics the aurora. While the design is a nod to Alienware’s 30th anniversary, the math is a little off. Alienware turns 30 in October 2026.

That aside, the new rounded detailing on the base and armature of the 27-inch monitor combined with the opalescent AW30 colorway is a striking choice for a gaming monitor. It’s a nice switch from Alienware’s previous design, which featured sharper edges and either white or black colorways.

Alienware also opted to use sustainable materials in the design of the monitor, including 83% post-consumer recycled plastic, 100% recycled aluminum, and 10% recycled steel. Even the packaging is sustainable, made of 100% renewable and recyclable materials.

The 27-inch 4K QD-OLED display also features a -5 to 21-degree tilt angle, with a 20-degree swivel on either side, and a 90-degree pivot angle. So you can tilt it, or set it up as a horizontal or vertical display, whichever suits your gaming needs best.

The armature’s swivel action is smooth and sturdy, so the panel doesn’t shake easily. This is ideal for gaming sessions, as it means the monitor will stay stable even if you’re smashing your action keys during high-intensity gaming.

Additionally, this Alienware monitor is relatively small and light, measuring 24 x 15.98~20.32 x 8.27 inches and weighing 14.97 pounds, with the stand included. This is on the lighter side compared to other QD-OLED gaming monitors like:

• Alienware 27 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF): 24 x 16~20.3 x 9.6 inches, 21 pounds
• MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD: 24 x 21 x 8.1 inches, 13.4 pounds

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Ports

Gamers generally need a lot of ports. Between additional monitors, keyboard, mouse, headset, webcam, gamepad, flight stick, or driving wheel and peddles, gamers tend to use more accessories with their hardware setup than most.

And with the Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED, even the most accessory-hungry gamer should have more than enough ports:

• 1 DisplayPort 1.4 (Supports up to 3840 x 2160, 240Hz, HDR)
• 2 HDMI 2.1 (Supports up to 3840 x 2160, 240Hz, HDR, FRL, VRR)
• 1 USB 5Gbps Type-B upstream
• 3 USB 5Gbps Type-A downstream
• 1 USB-C 5GBps downstream (power delivery up to 15W)

If that’s somehow not enough ports on a single monitor for your gaming setup, we’d recommend cutting some cords. Or if you truly cannot part with a wired accessory, at least go for one of the best USB-C hubs or docking stations rather than daisy chain your gear.

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Display

Alienware’s new 27 4K QD-OLED is one of the first monitors featuring the latest 27-inch 4K gaming QD-OLED panel that was all over the CES show floor this year. It’s also the first one we have gotten our hands on here at Laptop Mag, and the display doesn’t disappoint.

As a QD-OLED panel, the Alienware 27 offers a higher pixel density than standard OLED models, with 166 pixels per inch, and it features that OLED infinite contrast ratio and supports 1.07 billion colors. Needless to say, we expected plenty of vibrancy from the Alienware and it delivered.

After watching a number of 4K videos and playing Avowed and Monster Hunter Wilds on the Alienware QD-OLED, switching back to my usual 4K IPS monitor was a serious downgrade. While the difference between the Alienware’s enhanced pixel per inch QD-OLED panel and a standard OLED is difficult to spot, going from an LCD or IPS display and the QD-OLED is a major upgrade.

I ran around the opening area of Avowed in my test save, and the tutorial beach zone has rarely ever looked more vibrant. Between the Garryck’s vivid blue fur to the bright coral formations on the beach, the Alienware 27’s QD-OLED panel popped like a fever dream. The colors seemed super saturated with lush detailing. While Avowed still looks like a video game, it does feel more like a proper living world on this display.

Alienware rates the 27-inch 4K QD-OLED panel as covering 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with Vesa Certified DisplayHDR True Black 400. Our lab testing exceeded those numbers, with the display measuring 119.4% DCI-P3 gamut coverage and a peak HDR brightness of 423 nits. This was significantly brighter than the peak HDR brightness of other gaming monitors like the MSI Optix MAG274 or ASRock Phantom Gaming PG34.

The one display feature that was a bit of a letdown was the overall SDR brightness. While the Alienware 27 is certainly bright enough to be visible in most environments at 238 nits, especially with a matte OLED panel, it is dimmer than most other gaming monitors and could be an issue in direct sunlight. But in the Laptop Mag office, I had no problem seeing the screen with perfect clarity, even on lowered brightness settings.

Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) gaming monitor: Gaming and graphics

With a 4K max resolution and 240Hz refresh rate, gaming on the Alienware 27-inch 4K QD-OLED is a genuine pleasure. Sure, not everyone games in 4K and it is difficult to hit 240 fps frame rates in many modern games without graphics upscaling tech. But if you have a more recent discrete GPU capable of super sampling and frame generation, you can come close to 200 fps in 4K, even with demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Monster Hunter Wilds.

While the Alienware’s QD-OLED display looks great with all content, it is a gaming monitor and so gaming performance is key. Not only did Avowed look fantastic in 4K, the Alienware’s 240Hz refresh rate kept the performance reactive but smooth.

While not necessary in an RPG like Avowed, it was still a nice touch that came in handy for Cyberpunk 2077 and Monster Hunter. I had no frame delays or lag, even while running both games off a laptop GPU at 4K resolution. In fact, if I didn’t have the Razer Blade 16 (2025) open on the desk next to me, I would have sworn it was a desktop powering the Alienware; the performance was so flawless. While that is a credit to the Razer’s RTX 5090, it’s also indicative of just how slick the Alienware 27’s 240Hz OLED appears.

There are nine preset display modes for the Alienware 27 4K QD-OLED. Several of these display modes are set for specific game types, optimizing for refresh rate, responsiveness, high contrast, or vibrant colors.

The standard mode is the best of all worlds, but if you’d like increased contrast to help with a MOBA like League of Legends, there is a MOBA/RTS mode. You can also opt for Alienvision, which can give you an on-screen crosshair, increased visibility, or extreme contrast in the center of the display. This can help with games that have poor in-game reticle settings or poor visibility.

I stuck to either the Standard mode, FPS mode (reduces brightness and vibrancy a bit for faster responsiveness), or RPG mode (slightly higher brightness and vibrancy for more cinematic gaming experiences). I tended not to enable Alienvision, as I don’t play many poorly-lit shooters or MOBAs, but it could come in handy even with non-shooters like Monster Hunter Wilds.

Bottom line

The Alienware 27-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW2725Q) is a gorgeous gaming monitor. It sports a vibrant QD-OLED display with solid HDR support, a smooth 240Hz refresh rate, and a gorgeous redesign in the company’s 30th anniversary AW30 opalescent blue colorway.

Of course, whether or not you can take full advantage of the Alienware depends on your gaming setup. If you’re using an older or mid-range graphics card, a 4K 240Hz monitor is probably not worth the price.

But if you’re gaming with a powerful GPU, the 4K/240Hz threshold is getting more achievable as technology advances. So, depending on your gaming rig or how future-proof you want your monitor to be, the Alienware AW2725Q is a solid choice. And at $899, it's more worthwhile to get this new 4K panel than the older 2K 360Hz model.

However, if you’re a budget conscious gamer who would prefer playing at 1080p, it might be worth holding off until Samsung’s 500Hz QD-OLED panel hits the shelves.

The latest gaming monitors offer a wide range of innovative and interesting features, catering to a variety of gamers with different needs.

There are monitors with super high refresh rates that are ideal for competitive esports. There are monitors with dual resolutions intended for those gamers who want to see their games at the highest fidelity or switch to a lower resolution but faster refresh rate when playing intense, fast-paced games. Then you have monitors that just do it all like these QD-OLED displays from Samsung.

Then there's Asus, which is taking a different approach to what a computer monitor can do.

The company announced three new VU Air Ionizer series of monitors with the interesting addition of having their air purifier on the back of the actual display. This purifier uses advanced nano-ion technology to ionize the air directly in front of the user, helping to reduce pollen, allergens, and other airborne pollutants. This helps reduce the pollen, allergens, and other pollutants in the air as well as reduce airborne dust by 90% in three hours. While this air-purifying monitor may not boast the absolute highest resolution or the fastest refresh rates on the market, it does promise to make a person’s room cleaner—and possibly even smell fresher.

What else is in the air purifier monitor?

Aside from the air purifier feature, these new Asus monitors still come equipped with solid specs. The VU Air Ionizer series is available in three different sizes: the 23.8-inch VU249HFI-W, the 27-inch VU279HFI-W, and the 34-inch VU34WCIP-W.

The VU249HFI-W and VU279HFI-W have FHD IPS panels that have 178° viewing angles, SmoothMotion technology for 100Hz refresh rates, and 1ms Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT). On the bigger VU34WCIP-W, it has a 1500R curved panel with the same 100Hz refresh rate and MPRT. The monitors also have TÜV Rheinland-certified Low Blue Light and Flicker-Free technologies to help with eye strain during long gaming sessions.

Today's best Samsung gaming monitor deals

I recently got my hands on the Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub monitor, and while it is a fantastic deal for a 14-port IPS Black Thunderbolt hub, I also tested the UltraSharp with some casual gaming.

While the UltraSharp is a productivity monitor intended more for general or office use, it does sport a 120Hz refresh rate and features an enhanced contrast ratio that makes gaming a serious possibility.

Sometimes you don't need dedicated gaming hardware to have a solid gaming experience. But what does that look like? If you are going to use a non-gaming monitor for your gaming laptop, there are a few things to be aware of before you decide.

You don't need gaming hardware to game, but there are some caveats

Monitor refresh rate

Some games require high refresh rates. If you're gaming competitively or playing games that require quick reaction times, you'll want a monitor with a higher refresh rate and low latency. Most productivity monitors go up to only 120Hz.

But if, like me, your favorite games are playable at 60 to 120 frames per second and don't need extremely low latency, then you can sometimes save big by opting for a multi-purpose productivity monitor rather than a more expensive gaming version. I often play my multiplayer and single-player RPGs on a 60Hz 4K Samsung monitor, because I would rather have a high resolution and better graphics details than blazing fast framerates.

Also, my primary game time is spent in titles that don't require high frame speeds. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail is fully playable on the PlayStation 4, so it's designed to operate at 60 fps. Genshin Impact is intended to be played on smartphones as well as consoles and PC, so it caps PC framerates to 60 fps. And Baldur's Gate 3 isn't the kind of game you need a high framerate for since it is a turn-based D&D game.

Granted, I also upgraded my monitor during the peak Work-from-Home period in early 2021, so my monitor choices were expensive and limited.

However, I absolutely took advantage of the UltraSharp's upgraded 120Hz refresh rate and enhanced contrast ratio for a slick gaming experience.

Gaming resolution

Gaming at resolutions above 1080p requires serious gaming hardware connected to the monitor. So if you want to take advantage of its 4K native resolution, you'll need a powerful gaming laptop, desktop gaming PC, or a dedicated game console.

But your hardware requirements may depend entirely on what games you play. Even high-end GPUs like the Nvidia RTX 5090 can struggle to game at 4K without employing frame-generation technology in the latest games. That said, the RTX 5090 can get a good 50 to 60 fps of pure silicon power even in demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong.

But if you've got a solid gaming laptop or gaming PC, you'll make use of the UltraSharp's gorgeous display, high resolution, and high refresh rate. While the UltraSharp is not a cheap monitor, it is a fantastic Thunderbolt Hub so it can flex between work and gaming. And it won't hit your wallet as hard as a high-end gaming monitor.

Latency

The only true struggle with gaming on a normal monitor like the Dell UltraSharp 32 is latency. For games that need quick reaction speeds, the UltraSharp doesn't feature the low-latency technology that can make gaming monitors worth the extra cost.

Because I spend most of my time playing well-optimized RPGs, I don't need a 0.5ms extreme low-latency gaming monitor. Sure, high-end encounters in Final Fantasy XIV can require quick reaction speeds, but even those encounters don't require eSports-level latency. And I'm not the type of FF14 gamer trying to achieve a 'World's First' clear.

So how important latency speeds are for your gaming setup is entirely dependent on the types of games you play and how competitive you are in playing them.

Bottom line

The Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub monitor is a solid 4K hub monitor at a reasonable price considering its massive port array, 140W power delivery, and IPS Black panel. But it isn't a bargain for gamers.

You can get a solid 240Hz 4K gaming monitor for $500 or less. Some of those will often drop below $300 on sale.

Of course, if you're looking at high-end gaming monitors with refresh rates over 240Hz with ultrawide curved OLED screens, then the UltraSharp 32 might be a solid deal. It's even got 14 ports because it is a Thunderbolt hub, so it can handle all of your gaming accessories and even charge your devices at the same time.

But if you're looking to save some money, and you're between a $100 to 200 dollar productivity monitor compared to a $500 gaming setup, opting for the non-gaming monitor could be worth considering.

It certainly looks pretty, but with low brightness and some build-quality issues, can the UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE) make it onto our best monitors list?

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Price and configurations

There is only one configuration for the Dell UltraSharp 32, which costs $949 and is available today. This monitor features a 32-inch, 3840 x 2160, 120Hz, enhanced IPS Black panel.

Dell is also offering an UltraSharp 27 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor for $699 with the same IPS Black display panel, just in a smaller size. The 27-inch version is also available now.

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Setup

Most of Dell’s monitors tend to ship in a similar way and the UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor is no different. The stand comes in two pieces, so you need to screw the arm into the base to create the full stand (no tools required). Then you can easily attach the stand to the display panel, so the setup is complete in just a few moments.

When you first boot up the monitor, it will ask a few setup questions to toggle on certain settings like hub charging and auto-brightness. You answer these simple yes or no questions by using the control joystick on the backside of the monitor’s lower right corner. This is the usual setup process for most Dell monitors, and you can easily get the monitor unboxed and working in about 15 to 20 minutes tops.

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Design

Dell hasn’t changed much of the UltraSharp’s design. It’s got thin bezels on the front of the monitor, so you lose little screen space. The monitor features a silver and black chassis, with a silver arm and stand. So it fits neatly in any office environment. The stand is a bit chunky, but it’s nowhere near the size of the UltraSharp 40 Curved 5K Thunderbolt Hub monitor I reviewed last year.

Weighing 20.59 pounds and measuring 8.46 x 18.46 x 28.08 inches, the UltraSharp 32 is hefty and hard to move. While you’d think that would make the monitor rather stable, it has a habit of shaking via minor movements. This won’t be an issue for those with solid, sturdy office desks. However, on the Laptop Mag’s uneven office floor and flimsy desks, it’s annoying to work with. You’ll want to ensure you’ve got the UltraSharp on a stable surface that doesn’t shake with every keystroke.

Despite that, the UltraSharp’s dimensions are pretty standard when compared to similar productivity monitors like:

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Display

The UltraSharp 32’s 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS matte panel is the world’s first enhanced IPS Black display, offering a heightened contrast ratio of 3,000:1.

That came in handy when watching the Jurassic World: Rebirth trailer. The scene that captured what the UltraSharp can offer came at the end of the trailer, where a small fishing boat is nearly capsized by a giant Mosasaurus. The fishing boat is surrounded by contrast, with one side presenting an idyllic day on the sea, and the other revealing a gigantic Mosasaur breeching behind it, ready for some Jurassic-level carnage. The crisp details of the ocean surface, between the yellow highlights from the sun and the deep, nearly-black wave crests are beyond gorgeous, making for an unintentionally hilarious backdrop for the CGI sea monster.

The UltraSharp features nine preset display modes, each offering slightly different color space optimizations, but the Standard mode presents the best combination of vibrancy and brightness. It covered an impressive 134.4% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with a peak average brightness of 339 nits. The Game preset was slightly more vibrant, at 135.2% DCI-P3 coverage with a lower brightness of 336 nits. Despite the sheer number of preset modes, there isn’t too much variation in vibrancy, though the sRGB mode does see the DCI-P3 coverage dip to just 82.2% in favor of a 116% coverage of the sRGB color space.

While the 339 nit peak average brightness for the UltraSharp isn’t great, it is bright enough to cut through overhead glare. You shouldn’t have any trouble working in an office regardless of your lighting setup. However, I do wish it was just a bit brighter.

The UltraSharp comes with TUV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification so your eyes should feel less fatigued working all day with the UltraSharp’s high refresh rate, high color accuracy, reduced blue light, and reduced screen flicker (you do need to enable the eye-safe modes).

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Gaming and graphics

The UltraSharp is not a gaming monitor. It’s a premium productivity monitor that can be used for photo and video editing, but it does offer a game mode and a 120Hz refresh rate. So you can technically use it for some light gaming on your off hours (or on, I won’t tell).

As someone who uses a non-gaming monitor for my desktop gaming PC, I figured it was worth putting the UltraSharp through its paces in a game session or two. So I booted up Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail like a proper MMO hermit.

For casual gaming or even just daily MMO obligations, the UltraSharp can keep up with a 60 fps (frames per second) game experience, and with a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, your games will look great on the UltraSharp. In the Solution Nine hub, the futuristic zone’s pink and blue cyberpunk-style lights had crisp details and a smooth aura. If you need a monitor that can go from work to play, you’re in good hands.

Just make sure you’ve got hardware powerful enough to support a smooth gaming experience at a high resolution, like one of the best gaming laptops, or a game console.

Dell didn’t include speakers on the UltraSharp 34. If you want to use the monitor for any gaming or streaming binges, or you need to take any video calls for work, you’ll want to invest in a pair of the best wireless headphones or a set of the best computer speakers.

Dell UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE): Settings and configuration

There are nine different display presets on the UltraSharp 32, so finding the correct settings for you may be a little tricky.

The Standard Mode offers strong color vibrancy, solid accuracy, and good brightness. It's great for general day-to-day monitor use.

The Movie mode features an obvious blue-tint compared to the Standard mode, and a lower brightness level, so I tended not to use this mode at all. Game mode looked similar to the Standard mode, with slightly higher color vibrancy but dimmer max brightness. But if you want to fight for every nit of brightness like I did, stick with Standard.

The UltraSharp does feature multiple Color Space presets, which is important if you’re a photo or video editor. The color spaces it supports are: sRGB, Rec 709, DCI-P3, and Display P3. All of these modes are vibrant and accurate, though the values are, of course, customized for those color spaces.

The UltraSharp’s final mode is a Color Temp 6500K mode, which looks and tests very similarly to the Standard mode. However, you can adjust the Color Temp as needed if you prefer a warmer or cooler base tone.

You can also customize the brightness, contrast, sharpness, color input, and color temperature settings. But outside of highly specialized work, there’s no real need to get granular with your display settings.

Bottom line

The UltraSharp 32 4K Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U3225QE) is a solid value, netting you a crisp, vivid display for under $1000. It offers 9 preset display modes with multiple color space optimizations and customizable settings. Regardless of the setting, however, you’ll still get the most out of the enhanced IPS Black 3,000:1 contrast ratio and TUV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification. Not to mention the built-in Thunderbolt 4 hub offers plenty of charging options for your devices, with up to 140W of power delivery.

The drawbacks of the UltraSharp are its low 350 nits of brightness, its legacy Thunderbolt 4 technology, and its wobbly build. For an alternative, I recommend the HP E45C G5 Curved Monitor which offers a brighter panel, a more stable build, and extra screen space.

However, if you can forgive its flaws, the Dell UltraSharp 32 is solid for both business users and creative professionals.

It might sound weird to downgrade your monitor, but hear me out.

Even as monitor makers are rapidly growing their inventory with better and higher-quality panels, it might be right for you. After all, the monitor market is no longer limited to screen sizes; it has introduced ground-breaking technologies in recent years, which have changed the viewing experience forever.

The displays will continue to evolve, but that can’t be said about their mass adoption. Although 4K resolution appeared more than a decade ago, most consumers had difficulty transitioning from 1080p to 1440p, let alone 4K.

Sure, more customers are adopting higher resolutions every year, but 1080p isn’t going anywhere soon. With a steady 20%+ share in the desktop market in the last five years, it’s hard to deny that.

Here is why 1080p — which first debuted on monitors nearly 30 years ago — still rocks, why I stepped down from 1440p, and why it might also be practical for you.

It is a difficult choice at first, but it can make a huge difference

After using 1080p monitors for several years, I switched to 1440p a few years ago and tried UWQHD displays. The experience was immersive, and I loved the extra details in my games. I tried newer monitors as the years passed but never considered returning them to 1080p simply because it felt illogical.

That’s where I was wrong.

Unlike a CPU or a GPU, downgrading a monitor can be beneficial in specific ways that might not be visible initially.

From price to power consumption to certain visual technologies, there are many areas where a 1080p monitor excels, which is why I found it convenient for my setup.

My PC is no longer stressed and can keep up with modern games

Higher resolutions are demanding, and with titles such as Stalker 2, Spider-Man 2, God of War: Ragnarok, and similar intensive titles, it can be challenging for your CPU/GPU to keep up with the requirements to push the frame rates beyond 60. Since most enthusiasts choose 144 Hz, 240 Hz, or even higher refresh rate panels, 1440p and 4K resolutions can strain your GPU to the point where it will struggle to maintain a higher fps number.

Since my configuration, comprising Ryzen 1700X and GTX 1080 Ti is a bit old, my PC starts to cry when running modern titles at 1440p. One solution was to upgrade my system every few years (much more expensive), while the other was to simply opt for a cheaper solution, i.e., a 1080p monitor. I went with the latter, and thankfully, I can still run these modern titles with close to 60 fps in most circumstances.

Of course, there are still a few compromises here and there, but it couldn’t have been possible on my previous 1440p and UWQHD monitors. I am not saying that I liked the reduction in visual details, but when you reduce your resolution, you typically also reduce the screen size. This makes the smaller resolution feature an equivalent PPI (Pixels Per Inch), ensuring the visuals are still sharp.

1080p monitors are surely smaller, but think of the possibilities

Going compact has lots of benefits, and it is much easier for me to manage a dual or triple monitor setup. I use two 24-inch monitors for my work and gaming, and if I ever wanted to do a triple monitor setup on a monitor stand with three arms, it would require much less space than 27-inch or bigger screen displays. Not to mention, smaller monitors also offer better portability and can be handled easily.

One of the smaller yet effective benefits of using a 24-inch monitor is the appropriate distance between my monitor and myself. My desk measures approximately 30 inches in width, which makes 27 and 32-inch monitors quite overwhelming at this distance.

On the contrary, I have an easier time seeing everything at a glance on my 24-inch monitor, grasping as much content as possible without shifting my eyes too much. As most desks are 30 inches or less in width, a 1080p monitor with a 24-inch display is more appropriate than bigger screens.

My setup generates overall less electricity bill

Considering that their core specs are similar, there isn’t a massive difference in power consumption between a 24-inch and a 27-inch monitor. Still, a smaller monitor can greatly affect your setup's overall power consumption.

Typically, 1080p monitors consume between 20-30W or more, depending on the brightness and active technologies. 1440p monitors can consume over 50W, while an ultra-wide QHD monitor like mine can consume up to 100W at peak.

My 1080p monitor is already several times more efficient than my 1440p monitors. Still, apart from its lower power consumption, my setup consumes less power because it is not always pushed to 100% usage, depending on the workload.

While this can vary from application to application and game to game, 1080p monitors are generally generous on your GPUs, allowing you to max out the fps without forcing your GPU to 100% usage in all the games. However, this isn’t the exact case in modern intensive titles. However, there is still a noticeable difference in overall power consumption that does save you some cash on electricity bills over time. In regions like the EU, electricity is a much more significant concern, as it is much more expensive than in some countries on the Asian continent.

Smoother visuals on a budget

It’s already obvious that my system (and yours) can perform much better at 1080p than at 1440p. This makes it easier for my rig to hit the 100+ fps mark in various titles and even higher in specific eSports titles like CS2 and Valorant. It also allows me to enjoy my monitor's incredible smoothness, as hitting that performance level at 1440p is difficult, leaving my monitor’s potential unused.

It’s great that we now have 1440p 500Hz gaming monitors, but good luck hitting 500 FPS at that resolution. Even if you opt for a slightly lower (but still incredibly high) refresh rate monitor, like 240 Hz or 360 Hz, I can’t guarantee that you can reach those numbers in most titles, even if you own a high-end rig.

On the flip side, you can likely reach 240 Fps or even 360 Fps at 1080p, even in triple-A titles, assuming you don’t mind turning on DLSS Frame Generation or similar technologies. However, reaching that number natively is also possible in non-intensive titles if you own a powerful gaming rig.

Unsurprisingly, most professional eSports players still go for 1080p resolution because it offers ultimate smooth gameplay that helps them easily secure wins. Even if you aren’t a professional player like me, you will enjoy CS and Valorant more at 1080p than on higher resolutions.

1080p is still the best choice for content consumption and streaming

With 1080p being the most popular desktop PC resolution, I find it more convenient than 1440p for content creation and streaming. Capturing my favorite gaming moments now takes less space on my drive, and sharing them is also faster. Apart from recording my gaming footage, I find 1080p content more accessible and well-optimized online. This includes gaming and streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

It is also way better for gaming live streamers, as 1080p content requires less bandwidth. The consistent visual quality ensures that the final result looks exactly as the creators intended, with minimal distortion. Even though I am not a professional streamer, I still love watching live streams and gameplay from my favorite YouTubers.

The highlights of our search have to be a trio of excellent budget 1080p monitors of various sizes, and a couple of awesome 1440p curved displays for those looking to spend a little more cash.

On a regular basis, the gaming world sees some pretty wild innovations. Some are surprisingly great, like Razer's haptic cushion that lets you feel games and ultimately immerse yourself further in your favorite games. Others make you question why they exist in the first place.

One product I think fits into the second category is Koorui's soon-to-be-unveiled 750Hz gaming monitor. It's going to be the world's first 750Hz gaming monitor, which is undoubtedly an impressive feat, but for the average person, is it even going to be worth it? Pricewise or even in terms of actually being able to see the benefits? Probably not.

A closer look at Koorui's 750Hz gaming monitor

In addition to a super duper smooth 750Hz refresh rate, Koorui's upcoming 24.5-inch monitor will feature a Twisted Nematic (TN) panel, or a type of LCD panel, along with Quantum Dot (QD) film that enables a color gamut of up to DCI-P3 95%, HDR 400, FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution, and a 0.5ms response time.

There's currently no mention of price, but considering how much 480Hz monitors cost right now, I can only imagine it'll be incredibly pricey. Koorui will be showing off its new monitor at CES 2025, and will surely reveal a price (or at least a price range) at the event.

It looks like Koorui is specifically marketing this 750Hz gaming monitor as a product for the "esports landscape, where every frame can be a game-changer in fast-paced FPS and MOBA games." But even in that competitive scenario, it would take an insanely skilled eye to see the difference between 750Hz and 480Hz.

Furthermore, how many gaming laptops or desktops would be able to output games at 750Hz? Even if you're a competitive gamer, would this actually be a worthwhile investment if the games you're playing couldn't even match the monitor's 750Hz refresh rate?

This feels like advancement for advancement's sake, similar to Sony marketing the PS5's 8K support at launch when most people don't own an 8K TV and most games can't run at native 8K. It's still impressive to be the first to have done something, so congrats to Koorui for its achievement, but for most people, splurging on a 240Hz, 360Hz, or even 480Hz monitor is plenty.

On Thursday, Samsung unveiled several new monitors ahead of CES 2025, including what could be one of the most impressive gaming monitors of the year.

With CES just days away, one might expect Samsung to save its biggest announcements for next week. It looks like we're getting an early look at some upcoming Samsung tech, though.

Today Samsung unveiled new Odyssey, Smart, and ViewFinity monitors, all with a slew of exciting upgrades and new features.

For instance, the Smart Monitor M9 (M90SF), a 32-inch 4K OLED productivity monitor, is the first monitor to include on-device AI through Samsung's AI Picture Optimizer. This feature automatically analyzes the content your display and adjusts picture settings for the best viewing experience. The M9 also features 4K AI Upscaling Pro, which uses AI to boost low-resolution content to 4K.

The new 37-inch ViewFinity S8 (S80UD) is Samsung's largest 4K monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Like this Smart Monitor M9, this is also aimed mainly at productivity users and creatives. While it doesn't have on-device AI, it does offer a larger screen size so you'll have plenty of space for multi-tasking.

While Samsung's productivity monitors are impressive, by far the most exciting announcement today was Samsung's new gaming monitors.

Samsung launches the world's first OLED 500Hz gaming monitor

If there's one crucial thing to have in a great gaming monitor, it's a high refresh rate. Good pixel density and color accuracy are important, too, but refresh rate is critical for keeping up with fast gameplay. If you want the fastest refresh rate money can buy, Samsung has you covered.

The new Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SF) is the first-ever OLED display with a 500Hz refresh rate. Yes, that's right — 500Hz. It features a QHD (2560 x 1440p) resolution, rather than 4K, but that's a fair trade off considering you're getting a blazing-fast refresh rate on an OLED panel.

If image quality is your top priority, you're not out of luck. Samsung also announced the new Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF), which is the world's first 27-inch 4K OLED gaming monitor. Its refresh rate maxes out at 240Hz, but that should be plenty high enough for most gamers, particularly those looking for a 4K panel.

While the Odyssey OLED G6 is ideal for fast-paced esports games, the Odyssey OLED G8 is ideal for gamers who like to play RPGs and other games that prioritize top-tier graphics.

Speaking of top-tier graphics, Samsung also announced that it will show off a 3D gaming monitor at CES, the 27-inch Odyssey 3D (G90XF). This unique gaming monitor uses a lenticular lens and stereo camera to create 3D visuals without 3D glasses, much like the 3D visuals on Nintendo's 3DS consoles.

LG just couldn't wait until CES 2025 to show off its latest and greatest hardware, so on Monday, it took the wraps off a pair of enticing new gaming monitors.

At first glance, you may be unable to tell the difference between the two monitors. Both are 45-inch 21:9 ultra-wide OLED gaming monitors with a 5K resolution (5,120 x 2,160) and support for LG's Dual-Mode that allows you to switch instantly between eight screen-resolution and refresh rate combinations.

The big difference is the literal flexibility of the higher-end model, the LG 45GX990A, which can transform from a curved display to a flat panel.

Here's a closer look at both options, which we expect to get our hands on at CES 2025 in Las Vegas from January 7-10.

Bend but don't break

Typically, bending your monitor is a tragedy; I still lament the loss of my Dell UltraSharp 27 that was bent by a falling cabinet. However, in the case of the LG 45GX990A, bending it is one of the main selling points.

The monitor can go from a 900R curvature to a completely flat panel in moments. If you aren't familiar, 900R is an aggressive curve; the typical range for curved monitors is between 1800R and 4000R, so this isn't just a minor difference when transitioning from flat to curved.

If you're wondering why you might want to switch between flat and curved, there are a couple of potential reasons. One would be if you rely on your monitor to watch content with multiple people; a curved display is geared for a solo user. Some people also find specific games and apps are better suited to a flat monitor, but this can be due to visual glitches caused by software that isn't optimized for a curved panel.

Gamers will be happy with its fantastic 0.03ms response time, and its ports cover DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C with 90W power delivery. Finally, it is certified for Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.

A powerful curve

If you're fine sticking with a curved display 100% of the time, the LG 45HX950A gives you everything found in the 990A above, but it's locked at an even more aggressive 800R curvature.

The OLED panel also features a 4-side "Virtually Borderless" design, allowing the monitor to essentially disappear and serve as a window to your content.

Game smarter, not harder

If a 45-inch panel is excessive for your setup, you may want to turn to the LG UltraGear 39GX90SA, which is powered by webOS. That gives you built-in gaming and streaming services without plugging anything into it.

The panel is a 39-inch 21:9 OLED with an 800R curvature, matching the 45HX950A. LG also boasts about its "space-saving L-shaped stand" for this monitor but, regrettably, hasn't offered any photos just yet.

The display also features multiple USB Type-C ports, so you may be able to skip the USB Type-C hub with this monitor on your desk.

Whether you’ve got a laptop with a display that cramps your style when you need to spread out or a desktop for which you want to reap the productivity benefits of multiple monitors, it seems there’s never any shortage of reasons to want more screen real estate. A few months ago, I wrote about the explosion of portable monitors available in a wide range of sizes, prices, and resolutions. But new options continue to provide pixels aplenty on the desktop, on the go, or both.

Hip to be square

In contrast to ultrawide monitors such as the 49” 32:9 game-optimized displays, the Innocn 28C1Q or LG Dual-Up are 28” displays that boast a 16:18 aspect ratio (like two stacked 16:9 displays), making for one of the most square displays you can purchase. They offer a 2560 x 2880 (SDQHD) wall of screen. The Innocn includes a stand on which it can rotate 90 degrees; my preference was to keep it rotated in its slightly landscape orientation. However, the monitor’s dimensions are such that you don’t feel like you’re giving up much height or width regardless of the orientation, and the rotated position makes accessing connectors a bit easier. By comparison, the LG Dual-Up's Ergo Stand only allows you to tilt the display. However, it is much more readily available than the Innocn.

The screen size is one of the best I’ve used for doing full-page work or spreadsheets, and it’s great for viewing full web pages side by side. It soon became a strong rival to my favorite screen, a 34” ultrawide display. The company includes a webcam with a USB-C connector that can plug into the top of the display. One downside, though, is that it can't reorient the screen when you change from portrait to landscape or vice versa. Instead, this must be managed manually through the on-screen display (where the command is oddly buried) or the operating system.

Portable pixels

The Innocn would never be considered portable. That said, other “portable” monitors are pushing the boundaries of how large a display you can take on the go. These were capped at 18.5”, with larger sizes involving a thick backplate. However, ASUS, which has been in the category since the early days before USB-C, now offers the ZenScreen 22 and ZenScreen 24 portable displays. (Its $2,200 ZenScreen Fold OLED display hasn’t seen broad distribution and has been listed as out of stock on ASUS’ website.)

On the plus side, these displays are now large enough to serve as a main desktop monitor for many tasks, and Acer bundles a desk clamp that connects to a mounting device on the monitor’s back. On the other hand, while the 24” display can be powered by a laptop’s USB-C port, doing so will reduce the picture’s brightness; ASUS bundles a power supply with a barrel connector. Also, unlike many smaller portable displays, the ZenScreen 24 has a real on/off switch for added flexibility. Both the 22” and 24” ASUS monitors have 1080p resolution that allows viewing details well enough to take good advantage of the larger size, but a higher resolution would be welcome at this large screen size.

Is the future foldable?

UPerfect, for example, has introduced a 22” display with 2K resolution. And that isn’t its only play for more portable screen real estate. The company, which was early to market with an 18.5” display, has doubled down (and up) on that with its Delta Max. which consists of two hinged 18.5” displays. These displays balance a large amount of screen real estate in a form factor that can fit in many laptop bags. In addition, the top monitor can be partially rotated behind the color one to reduce their profile when the upper display isn’t needed.

The kickstand will support the monitors in portrait mode, but there’s little flexibility in terms of angle. Orientation changes must be made through the operating system. To provide extra stability for the added weight, UPerfect has added a third center hinge beyond the two typically seen in this kind of monitor. For a clean look, the two USB-C connectors are at the top of the back panel of the lower monitor, so the connected cables are hidden from view, but the recessed placement can make controls harder to reach. Also, like the other monitors discussed here, the Duo Max doesn’t support touch, but UPerfect is preparing a version that does.

Cyber Monday and Black Friday are hitting us left and right without pause, and we've seen plenty of incredible deals in the world of tech in laptops and more, but we've also seen some great deals for monitors. Regardless of if you're on the lookout for budget monitors, ultra-wide monitors, gaming monitors, or portable monitors, there's something out there for you.

For example, if you're in need of a solid office monitor that doesn't necessarily go above and beyond in features (but maintains a decent price point as a result), the Acer KB272 EBI is currently $99 at Amazon. Sony's Inzone monitors are getting a major esports upgrade. 

Today, Sony took the wraps off the M10S, the first OLED panel with Inzone branding, which was built using feedback from professional gamers. And if you're not a pro gamer, don't worry — I got a chance to preview the monitor before its release and can confirm there's lots to get excited about for us amateurs.

If you're a fan of Sony monitors and itching for an OLED upgrade, here's everything you need to know.

Sony Inzone M10S monitor: Price, release date, display

If you have limited space, or just aren't a fan of huge monitors, congratulations: Sony's Inzone M10S is relatively small at 27 inches.

What it lacks in size, it makes up for in fidelity, though. The M10S has a 1440p 480Hz OLED display, giving it a very fast refresh rate (important if you're in the targeted pro gamer demographic) and also a high contrast ratio that OLED panels inherently bring to the table, making it easier to spot and pwn any potential enemies.

All of that is nice, to be sure, but where the M10S really separates itself is in Sony's collaboration with the esports organization, Fnatic.

One of the features born from that collaboration is a 24.5-inch mode that displays games at a 1:1 resolution of 1332p and at a 480Hz refresh rate. It may seem odd at first to reduce the screen real estate of a fairly small monitor, but if you're a pro gamer, the shorter distance your eyes need to travel, the better.

On top of that, pro gamers can also use lower resolutions, including 1080p, which is often ideal for esports. 

And the esports flourishes don't stop there: there's also a new picture mode called FPS Pro+ which was fine-tuned in tandem with the Fnatic Valorant team. Sony says the mode is designed to maximize performance during gameplay by optimizing facets like image clarity and contrast. 

Sony's OLED Inzone monitor is also built to be fairly compact in an effort to optimize desk space and ensure you can move your mouse freely while gaming. Specifically, the monitor has a 159mm base diameter which is 4mm thin. That leaves plenty of room for an angled keyboard and a mouse pad.

Having gotten a chance to see the M10S in person, I can corroborate that the monitor looks and feels compact on a medium-sized desk.

For what it's offering, the M10S seems fairly priced at $1,099 and is available through Sony.com, Amazon, Best Buy, and more.

Sony Inzone M9 II: Price, release date, display

Alienware’s first ever dual resolution monitor, the AW2725QF, is an absolute success, but it’s worth it for only a niche selection of gamers.

If you’re the type of gamer who cannot seem to find a single display that fulfills all of your needs, the latest trend in dual resolution monitors might be what you’re looking for. Alienware is far from the first to incorporate this new technology, appearing in monitors like the Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG. But how Alienware implemented it is mighty impressive.

The Alienware AW2725QF is a 27-inch monitor that features a base output with a 3,840 x 2,160-pixel resolution at 180Hz, which is excellent for high-fidelity gaming, but it can also swap to a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution mode at a 360Hz refresh rate, ideal for fast-paced gaming. This makes it a fantastic choice for competitive players who also enjoy high resolution content. But beyond that, it’s a fantastic monitor overall. Keep reading to see why it’ll likely make it onto our list of best gaming monitors.

Alienware AW2725QF: Price and configuration

The Alienware 27-inch 4K Dual Resolution gaming monitor is unique in that the specs of its panel aren’t stagnant. It’s referred to as a “dual resolution” display because it can swap between 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) pixel resolution at up to 180Hz refresh rate or 1,920 x 1,080 (FHD) pixel resolution at 360Hz refresh rate. It fulfills the best of both worlds (performance and fidelity) and is available for $599 at Dell’s website. 

Alienware AW2725QF: Setup

Dell has always had a knack for making the setup process as easily as possible. You don’t need any tools whatsoever, and thanks to the panel being 27 inches, it is light enough that I had no issues moving it out of the box and laying it softly on a cushion. 

Simply attach the base to the arm and turn the knob at the bottom until it’s tight, then slot the arm into the back of the display. It took less than a minute to do and I will never get tired of manufacturers developing hardware that can be set up without the need for a screwdriver or other tools.

Alienware AW2725QF: Design

The AW2725QF doesn’t change much in its design when compared to the Alienware monitors from earlier in the year, boasting the same pentagonal base and Dark Side of the Moon color finishes. However, the display’s bezels are a little thinner compared with the AW2725DF, resulting in a slightly smaller monitor overall.

Alienware continues to utilize a joystick design for controlling its menu, and it’s an absolute blessing. Being able to conveniently scroll through menu items with a single knob is a huge time saver.

It features a maximum adjustable height of 4.3 inches, a tilt angle from -5 to 21 degrees, a swivel angle from -20 to 20 degrees, and a pivot from -90 to 90 degrees.

The Alienware AW2725QF weighs 15.8 pounds and measures 24.1 x 16.1-20.4 x 9.6 inches, making it surprisingly light. This is especially notable when compared to its OLED sibling, the Alienware AW2725DF (21 pounds, 24 x 16-20.3 x 9.6 inches), which has the same dimensions yet is far heavier. Other competitors like the Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-20 (17.7 pounds, 24.2 x 21.9 x 8.7 inches) and ASRock Phantom Gaming PG34 (29.8 pounds, 31.9 x 22.9 x 13.1 inches) are heavier, although it’s no surprise since the latter monitor is an ultrawide.

Alienware AW2725QF: Ports

The Alienware 27-inch 4K Dual Resolution gaming monitor features two HDMI 2.1 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4 connection, all three of which support 3,840 x 2,160 resolution at 165Hz refresh rate or 1,920 x 1,080 resolution at 330Hz refresh rate (which can be overclocked up to 180Hz and 360Hz respectively). It also has a USB Type-B port.

It has four downstream ports in the form of one USB Type-C and three USB Type A, which can connect devices for charging. Two of these USB Type-A support BC 1.2 power charging.

It comes with one power cord, an HDMI 2.1, a DisplayPort, and a USB Type-A to Type-B cable.

Alienware AW2725QF: Display

This 27-inch matte LED display features an option to quickly swap between 3,840 x 2,160-pixel resolution at 180Hz and 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution at 360Hz, and much of the Alienware A2725QF’s main appeal comes from this. It also supports Nvidia G-Sync and VESA AdaptiveSync.

Its dual resolution focus appeals to the best of both worlds. Higher resolution is perfect for single player games or lower-stakes multiplayer titles, especially those where you want fidelity first and foremost. Higher refresh rate goes hand-in-hand with frame rate, so if you’re playing a multiplayer game where things happen quickly, reacting just a millisecond faster could be the difference between life and death; higher refresh rate is what competitors need.

The issue is that having a high resolution panel at a very high refresh rate is pretty rare, and where it does exist, it’s expensive. Thus, the Alienware AW2725QF fulfills both, and while it isn’t necessarily doing it at the same time, it’s unnecessary to. It’s incredibly difficult (and costly) to run games at 4K and hit high frame rates, so the resolution will need to be lower anyway.

I launched Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and you cannot beat the smoothness of 3,840 x 2,160-pixel resolution. I typically play the game on a 2K monitor, and while it looks crisp enough for the most part, the difference is astronomical.

As I ran throughout a dense field of grass illuminated by the torch in my hand, the foggy glow of the night sky contrasted brilliantly against the warmth of the flickering flame. While it’s not as beautiful to bask in as my OLED, it’s impressive how pretty this panel is.

I watched the trailer for the Minecraft movie, and while the content of said trailer was awful, the panel did an excellent job representing the vibrancy of the world. The contrast between Jason Mamoa’s pink jacket and the bold green trees occupying the background made it clear just how capable this panel is in the realm of color. Even in my bright office, no scene appeared dim.

The Alienware AW2725QF covered exactly 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut on our tests at default settings. This is fantastic for an LED panel, ensuring you can enjoy your games at a level of vibrancy that won’t disappoint.

It couldn’t quite compete when compared to its OLED sibling, the AW2725DF (131%), but that’s no surprise considering its panel is designed to offer bolder colors and deeper blacks. The ASRock Phantom Gaming PG34 (90%) was a bit less colorful, but the Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-20 (105%) pulled slightly ahead in vibrancy.

It also benefits from being capable of hitting higher brightness with its LED panel, as OLED is often dimmer. It managed an average of 388 nits of brightness on default settings, which is pretty bright for a gaming monitor. You typically won’t need a panel this luminscient, especially if you’re planning on gaming in a dim room, but it can help when exploring worlds with darker environments (or poor lighting).

Competitors like the ASrock Phantom Gaming PG34 (327 nits), Alienware AW2725DF (242 nits), and Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-20 (238 nits) were quite dimmer. The AW2725QF is also rated for up to 600 nits on HDR mode, which was accurate to our tests, as we saw it reach 675 nits on the default setting at 100%.

Alienware AW2725QF: Audio

The Alienware AW2725QF does not feature built-in speakers, so we recommend checking out our best computer speakers page if you’re in need of an external audio solution.

Alienware AW2725QF: Settings and configuration

Since this monitor is pretty much a two-in-one deal, understanding its settings is vital. It features a power button on the right side beneath the bottom bezel, with a joystick in the middle. Holding down the joystick button will prompt the user to swap between 4K and 1080p resolution modes. Alternatively, you can just press the joystick and then press it again to prompt the swap.

This is a bit frustrating, though, as half of the time I try to enter the menu settings, I almost accidentally swap resolution modes. Considering the process takes a while and causes your entire PC to freeze for a bit, it’s not something you want to do by mistake. A discrete button would be nice.

The settings are also how you make the most use of its refresh rate, as its standard at 4K is 165Hz, and at 1080p it’s 330Hz. To get up to 180Hz and 360Hz, respectively, you need to open the monitor’s settings > select Game > go to Overclock > increase the refresh rate.

Other settings are on the more traditional side, like activating Dolby Vision, utilizing HDR, increasing response time, modifying brightness and contrast, and of course, all of its preset modes. These include Standard, FPS, MOBA/RTS, RPG, Sports, Creator, Warm, Cool, Custom Color, and three modifiable Game presets. Standard and Warm are my favorites, personally.

Bottom line

The Alienware AW2725QF does what it sets out to do pretty well, yielding an impressive display that delivers vivid color and high nits of brightness in a panel that can swap between 4K at 180Hz and 1080p at 360Hz.

However, we wouldn’t recommend it to those who play only one type of game. It’s a niche product that is meant to fulfill the purposes of two monitors in one package, allowing the user to jump from a competitive 360Hz mode to a more laid-back 4K for high fidelity streaming or gaming. But if you have no intention to use the 360Hz setting or are fine with 1080p, there’s no point in purchasing this product.

But if you genuinely see yourself using both, the monitor is incredible, and it’ll be a perfect solution for those who’d rather not purchase two separate monitors.

Samsung first teased its glasses-free Odyssey 3D gaming monitor at CES 2024, and as of Wednesday, we have an official release window for it. 

On Wednesday at Gamescom, a massive video game and computing event held in Cologne, Germany, Samsung announced that the Odyssey 3D monitor and updated Odyssey OLED models "will be available globally, including in North America, Europe and Australia, within this year."

Although we haven't had a chance to test this particular monitor yet, we tried a similar model from Acer at Computex earlier this summer, and it impressed us. Who knew a solid, glasses-free 3D experience was so close to our future? Samsung generally makes some fantastic gaming monitors, so we're hopeful this one will live up to the hype once it launches.

In the announcement, Samsung discusses almost every detail imaginable for the Odyssey 3D monitor but conveniently leaves out one major element: its price.

What we know about the Odyssey 3D gaming monitor

According to Samsung, the Odyssey 3D monitor's light field display (LFD) tech is able to create "lifelike 3D images from 2D content using a lenticular lens on the front panel." With this tech, Eye Tracking tech that uses a built-in stereo camera, and View Mapping tech to "continuously [adjust] the image to enhance depth perception," the result is a 3D experience that doesn't require 3D glasses to enjoy.

Because you likely don't want to stay in 3D mode for all tasks, like school- or work-related tasks, Samsung built in the ability to switch between 2D and 3D modes. The monitor will also come with a Height Adjustment Stand (HAS) and tilt capabilities, so you can ergonomically adjust the monitor to the perfect height and angle for you.

Samsung also notes the monitor will feature a 4K resolution, a 1ms gray-to-gray response time, a smooth refresh rate of 165Hz, FreeSync Premium, one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and two sizes to choose from: 27" and 37".

We even learned that the monitor earned a Best of CES Innovation award at CES 2024, but Samsung noticeably left out the Odyssey 3D's starting price in the announcement.

Samsung's monitors are generally high-quality, but they're often quite expensive, so it's worrisome that no price was included in the Odyssey 3D announcement. 

Many of Samsung's existing Odyssey gaming monitors are over or just under $1,000, and the aforementioned Predator SpatialLabs View 27-inch Gaming Monitor that we tried at Computex is $2,000, so we can set our expectations in that neighborhood. This is a new tech we're talking about, and that usually indicates a premium for at least a few years until it's more widespread.

Here's hoping Samsung has kept costs down on this one, because glasses-free 3D looks pretty epic, and it would be great to see it widely adopted.

On Thursday at Gamescom, an annual video game exposition in Cologne, Germany, Alienware revealed its new 27-inch Dual-Resolution Gaming Monitor (AW2725QF). The dual-resolution monitor can switch between two display modes: one with a native 4K (3840x2160) 180Hz panel for immersive gaming and another with a native FHD (1920x1080) 360Hz panel for competitive gaming. Alienware optimized the AW2725QF for both PC and game consoles for additional flexibility.

When picking out a gaming monitor, you’re often stuck deciding between a high-refresh-rate display or a high-resolution panel. While that isn’t a huge issue for every gamer, the decision can be brutal for multi-genre fans; Alienware's new monitor solves this dilemma.

The Alienware AW2725QF’s dual-resolution technology works because the native 4K panel can combine four pixels into one, allowing for a doubled refresh rate and native FHD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution. So gamers can benefit from running at a native resolution in either mode.

You don't need to be an eSports pro to benefit  from  dual  resolution

While monitors with high refresh rates are necessary for eSports and competitive PvP gamers, you don't need to try for a League of Legends championship to benefit from the 360Hz FHD mode of the Alienware 27-inch Dual Resolution monitor.

So if you only occasionally dabble in competitive MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) or FPS (First Person Shooter) play while spending the rest of your game time in immersive action and RPG (Role Playing Game) titles, you can experience the best of both game types without needing a clunky dual-monitor setup.

And at $599.99, the Alienware 27 Dual Resolution monitor isn't more expensive than most other 4K 27-inch gaming monitors. So you aren't even paying extra for the additional flexibility.

One of the more interesting developments in monitor technology at CES in January and Computex in June this year is the expansion of QD-OLED panels. 

QD-OLED is a sub-category of OLED display technology that uses quantum dots that emit color when receiving an electric current. Like OLED panels, QD-OLED displays are also incredibly vibrant and feature deep black shades, but QD-OLED panels can get even brighter than OLED displays. So seeing so many different QD-OLED monitors in the tradeshow circuit this year can only mean better display options for those who have the money to pay for a more expensive panel.

One of the newer options on the QD-OLED side is the Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ gaming monitor. Boasting Vesa Display HDR TrueBlack 400, bright vivid colors, a 144Hz refresh rate, and 0.03 ms response time, the CO49DQ gaming monitor could end up as one of our best gaming monitors.

Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor: Pricing and configurations

There is only one configuration of the Aorus CO49QD monitor. For $1,099 you get a 49-inch DQHD (5,120 x 1,440) super ultrawide QD-OLED gaming monitor with 144Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms GTG response time.

Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor: Design

The Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ has a minimalist V-shaped monitor stand, though it is VESA mount compatible if you’d like to fit it to an armature or alternative stand instead. As a super ultrawide monitor, it does have a pretty generous curve to the display panel. However, it isn’t a very severe curve so you have a bit of range on the viewing angle.

At 24.8 pounds, the CO49DQ is heavy, 18.3 pounds of that is the display, while the stand weighs 6.5 pounds. Measuring 47 x 22 x 10.29 inches with the stand, there's a good chance it will dominate your desk. However, if your desk can fit the monitor, you should still have enough space for all of your gaming accessories. 

Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor: Ports

There are plenty of ports on the Aorus CO49DQ monitor so you should have no problem connecting all of your gaming accessories straight to the monitor. The gaming monitor features two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 connection, one USB Type-C upstream port with power delivery up to 18W, two USB Type-A 3.0 downstream ports, one USB Type-A upstream port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor: Display

If the Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor holds true to the standards set by other QD-OLED monitors, it will be one of the nicest gaming displays you can get your hands on. Gigabyte has rated the CO49QD as a Vesa Display HDR TrueBlack 400 panel with 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut and a refresh rate of 144Hz with a 0.03 ms response time.

Of course, we’ll need to wait until we get a review unit into our labs and tested with a colorimeter to confirm, but the technology does have a reputation for producing bright, vibrant displays for good reason.

Outlook

The Gigabyte Aorus CO49DQ monitor has a lot going for it, when it comes to providing some of the latest monitor tech to the gaming community. With a VESA HDR TrueBlack 400 rating, 0.03ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate, DQHD (5,120 x 1,440) resolution, and 99% DCI-P3 gamut coverage there is plenty to recommend this gaming monitor to your wishlist. 

And while QD-OLED panels aren’t cheap, at $1,099 the CO49DQ gaming monitor isn’t the priciest out there. Of course, to determine just how well it holds up to its promises we will have to wait until we spend a bit more time with the monitor and run it through our benchmarks. But based on what we've seen so far, things are looking pretty good for this Aorus display.

Every time Acer brings one of the SpatialLabs monitors or laptops to tradeshows, it’s always a major hit. At Computex 2024, Acer showcased the Predator SpatialLabs View 27 to demo the latest advancements in 3D displays. Visitors to the Acer booth could test the SpatialLabs tech while playing a round or two of Street Fighter 6 in dynamic 3D on the 27-inch Predator monitor.

The SpatialLabs monitor uses eye-tracking, shaders, and drivers to render glasses-free stereoscopic 3D in real time. Using a lenticular lens sheet built into the display, the SpatialLabs View 27 can create 3D images at various angles, but there are limits to the technology. It only works for one person at a time and does not photograph well, but it is impressive to view in person.

Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27: Pricing and configurations

The Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27 is a 27-inch UHD 4K (3,840 x 2,160) 160Hz AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-synch IPS level monitor. 

The Predator SpatialLabs View 27 was announced back in February of this year and is expected to launch sometime this summer, but no official release date or pricing information is known just yet.

Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27: Design

The SpatialLabs View 27 is very similar in appearance to the Predator x27u monitor, with a tripod-style base and black bezels. The main difference is the SpatialLabs eye-tracking camera at the top of the monitor and the dual speakers underneath the display panel. There is also a small SpatialLabs logo on the back side of the monitor.

Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27: Ports

The Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27 features one HDMI 2.1, one DisplayPort 2.0, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port, and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports.

This is a pretty standard port array for a monitor, so it should handle your average computer, keyboard, and mouse setup, but you can always turn to a docking station if you need more.

Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27: Display

Display quality is the key point for any monitor, even one with a unique trick up its sleeve like this one, and fortunately the SpatialLabs View 27 delivers a high-quality display. Rated for 400 nits of brightness and a 5ms response time, it performs well as a gaming monitor. It won’t be ideal for eSports and competitive Player-vs-Player (PVP) games, but a 5ms display lag isn’t bad for any other gaming. And that’s an impressively short delay considering the stereoscopic 3D tech that needs to run in real-time.

Acer hasn’t made any claims as to how vibrant the SpatialLabs View display panel is, and we’ll have to wait on our lab tests to make any determinations, but it looked colorful during my time with it at Computex. I also didn’t detect any lag in the Street Fighter 6 demo, so it appears to perform well.

Outlook

The SpatialLabs products are often excellent demo products, but I'm not always convinced of their real-world utility. However, the SpatialLabs View 27 has a 160Hz refresh rate and 5ms response time, making it feel like a proper gaming monitor compared to its 60Hz predecessor.

Acer hasn’t divulged any information on a release date or pricing yet, but after the monitor’s appearance at Computex, we expect to have more information soon. There could be limits to the regional availability for the SpatialLabs View 27, but assuming the monitor is available in North America, it could be an intriguing option for our best gaming monitors.

Best Samsung Odyssey G6 monitor deal

Samsung revealed on Tuesday a refreshed lineup of monitors designed for "gamers, creators, students, and hybrid workers." And at first glance, the glare resistance is glorious — especially for those who work near a window.

The two Samsung Odyssey models feature a glare-free OLED display, the three Smart Monitors offer AI upscaling to 4K video, and there are five ViewFinity line monitors from which to choose.

With updates to the Odyssey gaming line, Smart Monitor, and ViewFinity creative line, Samsung has new monitors for gamers, students, and professionals.

The new monitors will be available through Samsung and select retailers. The 2024 monitors can be pre-ordered today. Pre-orders on the latest monitors will come with up to $300 Samsung credit for a separate purchase.

M80D Smart Monitor

The M80D Smart Monitor is a 32-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160) productivity monitor with HDR10+ support. Like other Samsung Smart Monitors, the M80D offers access to streaming TV applications like Prime, Netflix, and YouTube and the Samsung Gaming Hub for access to cloud gaming platforms like Nvidia GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Utomik. 

Other features for the monitor include two-channel built-in speakers using Active Voice Amplifier Pro, Head Tracking for Buds 360 Audio with your Galaxy Buds, and Multi-Control to move content between the M80D and other Samsung devices. Because the M80D Smart Monitor comes with the SlimFit camera, you can use it for video calls or for Samsung Health TV. You can also use Bluetooth to connect the M80D to your fitness trackers for added health tracking for your workout sessions.

The M80D also includes AI upscaling thanks to a NQM AI Processor, which can transform lower-resolution content to nearly 4K resolutions, for a more cinematic experience. Of course, there may be some issues with upscaling the resolution using AI, so this may not be the best way to watch those old episodes of Honeymooners, but it could be fun to play around with.

The M80D retails for $699.99.

ViewFinity S80UD

Samsung's ViewFinity line is designed for creative professionals, offering high resolution monitors with a high-degree of color accuracy. 

The 32-inch ViewFinity S80UD is a 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) monitor with high pixel density for added clarity. Samsung claims the ViewFinity S80UD is capable of outputting "1.07 billion colors and near-limitless hues" for wide color gamut coverage and high accuracy. The monitor also features HDR10 support, a built-in LAN port, and a USB-C port that allows for 90W charging and data transfer.

The ViewFinity monitor also has a built-in KVM switch for switching between different inputs, including split screen, picture-in-picture, and picture-by-picture modes.

The ViewFinity S80UD starts at $499.99.

Other new ViewFinity monitors include the S80D and S70D.

Odyssey OLED G6 and G8

The Samsung OLED G80SD and G60SD were announced back at CES in January. Both OLED monitors support Samsung's new OLED Glare-Free technology, a 0.03ms response time, active temperature control using Samsung OLED Safeguard+ technology, a Dynamic Cooling System to diffuse heat and lower brightness to prevent overheating, and burn-in protection by auto-controlling brightness on static images like task-bars, mini-maps, or other UI features in games or shows.

Both the G8 and G6 also feature slim metal designs, smooth display swivel hinges, and CoreLighting+ to sync the RGB lighting on the back of the monitor to your mouse, keyboard, and tower lights.

The Odyssey G8 (G80SD) is a 32-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160) OLED monitor with 240Hz refresh rates and retails for $1,299.99.

The Odyssey G6 (G60SD) is a 27-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440) OLED monitor with 360Hz refresh rates and retails for $899.99.

Just how glare-resistant is the new anti-glare OLED tech?

I was able to take a look at the Odyssey G6, Odyssey G8, and M80D Smart Monitor at Samsung's New York headquarters ahead of the announcement. 

While the M80D Smart Monitor was a fun product with plenty of quirks and features to be an interesting object, what really claimed my attention was the anti-glare coating on the revamped Odyssey G6 and G8 monitors.

Samsung set the new Odyssey G6 and G8 next to the curved Odyssey G9, which has its own anti-glare tech. All three monitors were set up side-by-side in front of a wall of windows on a bright day, so there was plenty of light to cause glare. The G9 struggled with its glossy OLED panel between the overhead lights and the Sun. The Odyssey G6 and G8 barely showed any glare at all. Even on darker screens like the Red Dead Redemption II menu or the Cyberpunk 2077 settings screen, both of the new Odyssey monitors were nearly glare-free.

While OLED display panels are often brighter and more vibrant than their LCD counterparts, the glossy panels often come with a lot of extra glare which is generally a bad combination when it comes to gaming monitors. Of course, you can get OLED displays with a matte finish, but they tend to be less impressive than glossy OLED screens. The Odyssey G6 and Odyssey G8 present a compelling compromise between the gorgeous detail and color accuracy of a glossy OLED and the glare-free properties of a matte panel.

Once upon a time, all it took to have a computing setup worthy of praise was owning anything modern enough to escape the gravitational pull of the beige plastic heresy to hardware design that riddled home PCs of the early 2000s.

Having a second monitor on your desk was, at one point, akin to that scene in Richie Rich where he reveals an in-house McDonald’s to his visiting ruffian friends. It was a marker of serious gaming or productivity intentions and a flex on those single-screened peasants who had yet to partake in the great screen real-estate expansion of the 2010s.

After upgrading my setup with a fancy new desk to ease the smothering claustrophobia of my typical workdays, I truly felt like I’d dragged my dated setup kicking and screaming into the modern age. Cool gray wooden finish, with white-like grain highlights. That’s bone. And, a perfect blank canvas with which to work from.

Add some miniature potted succulents, a splash of color from an oversized desk mat, about two hours of cable management, and a monitor arm that I don’t know the name of, so let’s just call it a Silian Rail, and I assumed I had a modern setup to be envied by all. But just to be certain, let’s look at Paul Allen’s setup.

Look at that subtle ambient light fall-off. The tasteful thickness of the colors framing the monitor. Oh, my God. It even syncs with the image on the screen. Am I sweating? 

Breakout from your bezels

Gamers have seemingly missed the memo on the claim that it’s bad luck to leave your Christmas decorations up past the Twelfth Night — insisting that their computing setups remain adorned all year round in colorful, animated, twinkling lights that were at one point solely reserved for the Festivus period, or the bedrooms of 15-year-old girls who owed all of their interior design wisdom to whichever female lead was playing on whatever tatt The CW had thrown out that year. But it’s hard to argue that what they’ll lose out on in luck, they more than make up for in style.

Ambient lighting feels like one of those gimmicks that haven’t quite fulfilled its potential in the mainstream. While not entirely dropping off the public radar like the 3D TV craze of the mid-2010s, it’s not something you’re likely to encounter in many homes. But it lives on fairly strong through accessories like the Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip featured in the above image.

Philips Hue make ambient lighting more accessible to people who don’t want to fork out for the same brand’s Ambilight smart TVs, creating immersive ambient experiences with impressive versatility across a range of devices. There’s just one problem: lighting solutions like Philips’ can be quite expensive.

The Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip for PC monitors 24 to 27 inches in size can set you back $169 at least, making it a considerable investment when it comes to brightening up your setup. While some believe that Philips’ Hue range of lighting is the best the market has to offer, there is another. A cheaper alternative that doesn’t sacrifice features or performance to secure an infinitely more attractive price tag. 

Save your money and give it a Govee

Enter, Govee. Or, more specifically, the Govee Gaming Light Strip G1 for 24- to 26-inch monitors — an ambient smart lighting solution that competes with Philips’ offering at a fraction of the price. How much of a fraction?

At the time of writing, you can currently pick up this ambient lighting kit for PC monitors at Amazon for just $39 (with a coupon), or you can save even more by purchasing directly from the Govee website (where signing up for the Govee newsletter can net you a $5 discount code). Even if you’re making use of a larger monitor that’s 27 to 34 inches in size, then the price only creeps up by a further $10.

To put it plainly, when it comes to ambient lighting for your PC monitor, Govee seems to be handing out RGBIC like it’s candy. But is it any good? In a nutshell. Absolutely. I own a bunch of Philips Hue lighting already, usually picked up at a discount during sales when the prices are somewhat more stomachable than a gut full of mercury. And I was sorely tempted to pick up the brand’s Gradient Lightstrip for my monitor. But I didn’t, I went with Govee instead, and I’m glad.

Having made my purchasing choice already, I can’t exactly compare the two directly. But what I can say is that for the price I paid, and the experience I’ve gotten in return, I’m comfortable that I made the right decision. Not only were the Govee lights simple to install, but they were even simpler to set up, instantly giving my setup a sense of dynamic character that was sorely lacking beforehand.

All it required was to affix the four sections to the back of my monitor with the adhesive side of the RGBIC light strips and then connect things up by Bluetooth using an app on my smartphone, which then allows me to run things using the Govee app directly from my laptop.

The results speak for themselves, here’s a before and after shot of the Govee lights in action, reacting in real-time to my external display. The lights are responsive, bright, and accurate — all without distracting from the overall experience. From movies to TV shows, and even general browsing this ambient backlight is a treat, casting a splash of illumination that lets the content of my display pour out, while simultaneously pulling me into the frame all the more.

Crack open your Steam library and dive into some of your favorite games and that immersion gets dialed up even further, with light sources spilling out into the real world, the flash of gunfire rapidly illuminating the room, and the the ambiance of each environment snaking its way past your monitor’s bezels.

Better still, that ambient lighting seems to pour out in all directions thanks to the Govee Gaming Light Strip’s coverage of all four sides of your monitor. The Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip only bridges three sides, leaving the area below your monitor to become a gaping black hole of immersion theft in contrast to the rest of your backdrop.

Speaking of contrast, the ever-present glow of the ambient backlighting does wonders for your monitor’s picture. Don’t have an OLED display? Don’t even worry about it. The Govee’s backlighting makes blacks appear darker, and colors all the more vivid, elevating the contrast of your screen by influencing the brightness of your surroundings. With an ambient light in place, your eyes fill in the blanks, making up for any visual magic your monitor simply isn’t capable of.

That backlit glow isn’t all about immersion and awe, however. There are also some impressive health benefits to using an ambient backlight, similar to that of making use of a monitor light bar.

Staring at any type of screen for too long can cause considerable eyestrain and fatigue, the effects of which are multiplied when sat in darker environments — something many of us do to aid immersion in games and media. Ambient lighting is an effective way of avoiding these strains, working as a type of bias lighting — allowing your eyes to more easily balance a bright screen with your dimmer surroundings. 

While it won’t fully illuminate the desk in front of you, it will make it easier for your eyes to focus on your display, greatly reducing eye fatigue in the process.

Outlook

All too often, consumers like you and I will attempt to save a quick dollar, only to find ourselves in possession of an inferior product that only costs us more in the long run. Buying within a budget can sometimes feel like a gamble, which is why it’s always something worth raving about when it swings in your favor.

For me, choosing the more affordable option with the Govee Gaming Light Strip G1 has been just that. And, hopefully, if you’re in the market for giving your gaming setup a glow-up of its own, I can pass that recommendation on, saving you a mighty chunk of cash in the process and giving you peace of mind that you’re getting a level of quality that won’t disappoint.

Monitors come in all shapes and sizes, and while many can appeal to general needs, others are for specific groups of people. Alienware’s AW2725DF gaming monitor sits in that latter category, as while it is great, its refresh rate is tuned so high that a vast majority of gamers won’t see real benefit without playing less demanding games or having an extremely powerful PC.

360Hz is a lot if you’re someone like me, mostly jumping between indie titles and the occasional AAA game launch. The only game I can make use of this refresh rate with is “osu!,” but even then, this simple circle-based rhythm game can hit only 330 to 340 frames per second on my RTX 3080.

So, who is this gaming monitor for? Beyond its gorgeous QD-OLED display, crisp 2K resolution, a solid out-of-the-box configuration, that 360Hz refresh rate is made for the competitive gamer. If you have money to spend ($price) and want a panel with high refresh rate without sacrificing the premium features in the best gaming monitors, the Alienware AW2725DF might just be for you. Keep reading to see whether or not that’s true.

After troubleshooting with Alienware support, we found enabling CSM in my Asus ROG Strix Z5690-E Gaming Wi-Fi motherboard’s BIOS fixed the issue. The Alienware AW2725DF features a 26.7-inch QD-OLED matte, flat panel, 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution, 360Hz refresh rate, and 0.1 millisecond response time at its native spec. The monitor is available for $899 on Alienware’s website.

You can step up to the Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW3225QF), which costs $1,199 and features a 32-inch, 3840 x 2160 Quantum Dot OLED display clocked at 240Hz with a curved 1700R screen. If you want an even bigger screen, you can get the 34-inch, 1440p, QD-OLED, 175Hz, curved 1800R model for $894 at Dell. 

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) setup

Akin to many monitors, the Alienware comes in three parts separated into a base, arm, and panel. Simply slot the arm into the base and use the screw’s convenient handle to tighten it, then place the panel on a soft surface (or leave it in the box where the back is easily accessible, slot the top of the arm in, and pull it out. Just like that, the monitor is ready to use. 

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) design 

The Alienware presents a Dark Side of the Moon color finish, which is just a fancy way to say “dark gray.” It has a -5 degree to +21 degree tilt, -20 to +20 degree swivel, -90 degree to +90 degree pivot and a 110 millimeter height adjustable stand. Its hexagonal base is small yet supports the weight of the monitor sufficiently, with an arm protruding from the end center connecting to the panel.

The monitor also ships with a plastic cover for its port section, meaning the giant gap at the bottom of its back can be near-fully sealed. I initially couldn’t get it to slot in correctly, but then realized the wires need to come out of the cover’s opening itself rather than the nook underneath the monitor. Even then, the protruding lower bit of the panel made it difficult to slot ports in, but once the process was complete, it looked sleek and clean from all sides.

Some monitors still use buttons to control menu items, but thankfully, everything the user needs is available with a single joystick on the Alienware. Clicking or pushing it up reveals the menu, where quick access to preset modes, input source, brightness, contrast and more are available. Flicking up on the joystick again reveals the full options menu, providing access to in-depth settings modifying the monitor’s three-zone AlienFX lighting, picture-in-picture settings, AlienVision and more.

The monitor measures 24 x 16~20.3 x 9.6 inches and weighs 21 pounds, making it light enough to easily move from one spot to another, and also the perfect size to sit alongside two other monitors on my 59-inch desk. For VESA mounting, the panel itself is only 9.5 pounds.

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) ports 

Featuring an extensive collection of ports, the Alienware is well suited to support its mind boggling 360Hz refresh rate. Its back has two DisplayPort 1.4 slots for up to 360Hz refresh rate, an HDMI 2.1 port for up to 144Hz refresh rate, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type B, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports. On the bottom is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port and another USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A. 

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) display 

With a 27-inch QD-OLED matte panel at 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution, 360Hz refresh rate, 1ms of response time at its native settings, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, the range of gamers this monitor exists for is a tad limited. Its QD-OLED panel and 2K resolution are great for most, but investing in a monitor that refreshes at 360Hz is unnecessary for the majority.

It’s likely that you will not see the full benefits of this refresh rate unless you’re in the competitive scene with a powerful rig. Even when testing “osu!”, a visually simple rhythm game involving clicking circles to music, I could reach only 330 to 340 frames per second. Gamers who prefer modern, single-player titles that continue to push the limits of graphical fidelity won’t hit anywhere near that framerate.

If you’re in the market for a monitor that refreshes super fast for competitive titles like Valorant and DotA 2, this is a great choice. If you don’t particularly need that, spending extra money on a 360Hz panel is a waste. But outside of the refresh rate, this OLED screen is stunning to behold. 

I launched Lethal Company to see how well the OLED could handle the darkest corners of its desolate moons, and it’s unsurprising to say I was scared to death. The pitch blackness of its metal walkways and endless concrete halls were deeper than ever, causing the slightest flicker of a Bracken’s white eyes in the dark to make me jump.

I then moved onto Helldivers 2 where its unique planets came to life, as the gigantic red ring surrounding Vandalon IV created a hypnotizing glimmer of red dust when dropping down onto the planet. Sure, it may seem like a simple space military shooter, but these worlds have intense color palettes, from the beautiful green fog surrounding the rocky Angel’s Venture to the dense snow and ice in the tundra of Heeth. Witnessing the deep red glow of an Automaton’s intent to kill is unlike anything else when the color looks this good.

The Alienware scored an average brightness of 242 nits on the Standard preset with brightness set to maximum. While some might find this is a bit dim, it’s perfectly fine if you’re not in a particularly bright room. Even then, I keep the brightness at 75% to ensure the color looks as good as possible. In our HDR tests, when testing HDR Peak 1,000, it successfully hit over 1,000 nits.

Covering 130.6% of the DCI-P3 color gamut on standard mode, the AW2725DF’s deep colors are bolstered by its absorbing blacks. Creator mode puts this down to 104% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is good for artists who need consistent color between others and in physical media. In our HDR tests for HDR Peak 1,000, the UDHA-P3 gamut coverage was at 99%, and while this metric is similar to DCI-P3, it has a slightly different red primary.

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) audio

Alienware 27-inch 2K QD-OLED (AW2725DF) settings and configuration 

Configuring a monitor usually starts me on a journey of uncertainty, and it often takes hours of testing for me to be satisfied. However, I’ve been using most of the default settings on the Alienware, with one exception. Sharpness can make images in films and games look overly sharp and cause tiny objects or few pixels to be blended together, creating a bizarre dotty effect, so I dropped that down to 0.

Otherwise, I keep my preset on Standard and have brightness and contrast both at 75. While the display might appear dim to some, I don’t need gaming monitors to be bright, especially if it sacrifices color depth. This is part of why I never use HDR, and although I did test both DisplayHDR True Black and HDR Peak 1,000, they washed out the colors of my google chrome tabs, and turned the world of Helldivers flat. No thanks.

Bottom line 

There’s no doubt that the Alienware’s stunning OLED panel and crisp resolution coalesce into a quality monitor, but its 360Hz refresh rate will appeal to only competitive gamers with powerful rigs. If that’s not quite your situation, save yourself a bit of cash by going down to a 165Hz or 240Hz monitor with similar specs. 

Alternatively, if you’re dedicated to the Alienware brand, you could invest in the AW3423DW, which is a 34-inch, 3440 x 1440-resolution, QD-OLED ultra-wide beast for just $100 more by dropping to a 175Hz refresh rate.

If you are that aforementioned gamer who needs a display that can handle intense framerates in competitive games, look no further. The AW2725DF is designed for securing headshots in high-octane games like Valorant, or catching the smallest intricacies within the teamfights of DotA 2.

There’s nothing like a new gaming monitor to revitalize the visuals in my lengthy game library. When I heard about Alienware’s slew of OLED monitors, I could literally feel the drool leave my mouth. Now with the Alienware 32 QD-OLED AW3225QF in my hands, or rather at my desk, I can confirm its drool-worthiness.

For a whopping $1,199, the QD-OLED AW3225QF features a 32-inch, 4K Quantum Dot OLED curved 1700R display with a 240Hz refresh rate. It is fast, colorful, and straight-up immersive. However, while Alienware boasts 1000 nits of brightness via HDR, that setting washes out the color and makes it not worth watching (unless you put in some work, as I discuss below).

Despite that, the Alienware 32 QD-OLED AW3225QF is an excellent display and easily one of the best gaming monitors to launch this year.

The Alienware AW3225QF 32 4K QD-OLED is just one of many flavors that Alienware offers in its displays. This model costs $1,199 and features a 32-inch, 3840 x 2160 Quantum Dot OLED display clocked at 240Hz with a curved 1700R screen.

If you step down to $899, you’ll get the 27-inch, 1440p, QD-OLED model with a 360Hz refresh rate. But if you want a bigger screen, you can get the 34-inch, 1440p, QD-OLED, 175Hz, curved 1800R model for $894 at Dell.

Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW3225QF) setup

Getting the Alienware AW3225QF 32 4K QD-OLED operational was quick and simple.

All I had to do was attach the base to the mount with the already attached screw, which had a neat little handle. Then, while the monitor was still in the box, I slid the mount into the back and waited for the click. I lifted the monitor aloft like I was King Arthur raising up Excalibur. Then Merlin struck me in the head with the ports panel.

When I tell you that getting the cables in place while slipping on the ports panel took longer than watching water boil and was equally wet (I was sweaty), there is no hyperbole. Under the impression that the cables hung underneath the monitor, I spent nearly 10 minutes almost snapping this thing in half. But no, the cables have to worm their way through a slit at the top of the ports panel. Listen, I couldn’t figure it out, and that’s on me, but there was no instruction or diagram to guide me back to sanity. Alienware, help people like me. Paint us a picture.

Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW3225QF) design

Gorgeous face aside, we’ve got slim bezels surrounding the Alienware AW3225QF’s glossy panel at the front and the familiar Alienware logo at the bottom. You might not notice it at first, but there’s a subtle 1700R (1.7-meter) curve that keeps my attention without being distracted. The lower the number, the deeper the curve will be. I’m not a fan of the deep curves (on monitors), so this panel is perfect for me.

Meanwhile, the back of the monitor flaunts that sick Alienware design — crisp white on black flanked by the RGB-lit company logo and the number “32.” At the bottom you’ll find the power button, a couple of easy-to-access ports, and the menu joystick. As long as you can get your hand to the underside of the monitor, it should be easy to adjust the settings. Although, I will always advocate for the controls being closer.

Let’s talk about angles. We’ve got a -20 to +20-degree swivel, a -5 to +21-degree tilt, and a stand that can adjust between 18.61~22.94 inches off the ground (or ‌110 millimeters). It offers more than enough adjustment for me to get situated at my desk, but keep those numbers in mind if you have a more precarious setup.

When we’re talking actual size, the Alienware AW3225QF comes in at 28.17 x 12.04 x 18.61~22.94 inches. For smaller desks, it’s likely to take up the whole space, but you can easily slot this in a 2- to 3-monitor setup on a larger desk. The depth is steeper than I’d like it to be — the shortest part of a desk is usually the depth, so I need all the room I can get. For VESA mounting, you need to consider only 13.23 pounds, otherwise the full monitor comes in at 31.72 pounds.

There is quite the selection of ports in the Alienware AW3225QF.

From left to right, we’ve got the power connector, security lock slot, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B port, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 FRL port with eARC, a regular HDMI 2.1 FRL port, and a DisplayPort 1.4.

Toward the front of the display, you can easily access a separate USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port and USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port.

Playing with that joystick will reveal a quick menu featuring Brightness/Contrast, Input Source, Preset Modes, Dark Stabilizer, and AlienVision. Flick the joystick away from you on any of those options and you’ll find the settings proper. The interface is clean and, thanks to the joystick, easy to use.

Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED (AW3225QF) display

The Alienware AW3225QF features a 31.6-inch, 1700R curved display with a 3840 x 2160 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. With a 0.03 millisecond response time and Nvidia G-Sync (and VESA AdaptiveSync), you likely won’t suffer from hardware limitations or screen tearing. And the best part, the panel is OLED with Quantum Dot technology — which means deeper blacks and bolder colors. We also got HDR 1000 as well as Dolby Vision.

To do my part, I played Helldivers 2 and delivered some democracy to the Automaton traitors. A crimson wave boiled over the rolling hills — so bold I couldn’t tell if it was blood-soaked grass or if the planet’s flora took a different turn on the RGB scale. Spamming my Reinforce Stratagem in the dead of night, the beam of light that signaled hope glowed a vibrant blue, reflecting against the foliage — I felt like I was in a movie. I ran away from the Automatons (democratically) through the forest and the crystal clear picture guided me through waves of trees, fog, and artillery fire.

I shot my way through Arasaka Tower in Cyberpunk 2077, and the dimmer SDR made it difficult to see in the corners of the elevator, while the HDR1000 revealed the machine-like edges on the surface of the walls. (I’ll elaborate on the wild differences between the SDR & HDR further down below.) However, it did feel freakishly smooth when I burst down the hallway and started cutting down fools with my katana.

According to our colorimeter, the Alienware AW3225QF covered 181.8% and 128.8% of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamut, respectively (SDR, Standard). For reference, 100% appropriately covers the range of each color gamut, so this monitor goes above and beyond. The AW3225QF isn’t the first time Alienware made an OLED monitor. The Alienware AW5520QF covered 141.9% sRGB and 100.5% DCI-P3, falling well below the new hotness in town. And when compared with the professional Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-20 (104.6% DCI-P3), the AW3225QF still comes out on top.

At 240 nits of brightness (SDR, Standard), the Alienware AW3225QF is dimmer than I’d like it to be. It still outpaces the ThinkVision (238 nits), but it doesn’t come close to its OLED predecessor of yore, which came in at 400 nits of brightness.

In terms of color accuracy, the Alienware AW3225QF (SDR, Standard) boasts a Delta-E of 0.22 (closer to 0 is better). The Alienware AW5520QF was less accurate (0.27). However, as a professional monitor, the ThinkVision kills it with a 0.08 Delta-E.

When we’re talking about HDR, the numbers get a little funky. The Alienware AW3225QF covered 99.25% of the UHDA-P3 color gamut. The comparison between DCI-P3 and UHDA-P3 isn’t apples to apples, but we can say that SDR is more colorful whereas HDR is more color accurate. The problem, however, is when HDR is pumping 1000 nits, the colors get washed out by the brightness. When on HDR 400, the contrast is better, but it still suffers from the same issue. (I’m going to dive deeper into this below.)

So I have a whole rant about HDR and SDR building up in my veins, but I will keep it brief and explain how the settings, especially SDR and HDR, impact the Alienware AW3225QF.

Before you decide how you want to view content, you need to think about whether you want SDR or HDR. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as the click of a button. Well, technically it is, but it’s not very convenient.

Switching HDR settings on the Alienware AW3225QF and enabling or disabling it through Windows causes the screen to flicker on and off. That would be inoffensive if it didn’t completely throw around your windows each time you did it. This makes swapping between SDR and HDR settings incredibly frustrating, so you’re better off figuring out a default for yourself. Unless, of course, you don’t mind the pain and suffering.

SDR content is incredibly vivid but considerably dimmer than HDR. HDR, however, is remarkably bright but washed out in comparison. To get the best of both worlds, I tinkered with the HDR settings (on HDR Peak 1000) and drove up the contrast via the Nvidia Control Panel. This worked to drive that creeping white-out effect out of the corners of the display. But it’s not a great solution. Some content, like Steam’s in-game UI and Google Chrome, became dark and blotchy. And it still didn’t get as colorful as SDR.

If you don’t mind the brightness, I highly recommend sticking with the SDR settings. I enjoyed the Standard setting the most, combined with 90% brightness and 75% contrast. Any more in either would wash out the screen. However, if you tinker around with displays like me, use Custom Color to start at the Standard settings and you can adjust overall Gain, Offset, Hue, and Saturation.

For what it’s worth, I will be sticking to SDR. It’s probably better for my strained eyeballs.

Bottom line

The Alienware AW3225QF 32 4K QD-OLED gaming monitor is a stunner. From its gorgeous QD-OLED panel to its super high refresh rate and low response time, it’s hard to say no to this machine. But it is expensive. And it has its issues, too, but if you’re not into HDR gaming, then this display is perfect for you.

However, if you do care about HDR gaming, you might have better luck using this monitor for console gaming. The Alienware AW3225QF offers Dolby Vision technology that’s easier to access through consoles, and consoles generally manage HDR better than Windows.

But if you want something cheaper, smaller, and more color-accurate, the ThinkVision P27u-20 is a solid choice.

Otherwise, the Alienware AW3225QF 32 4K QD-OLED is tough to beat.

CES 2024 is pumping out a wave of new laptops, CPUs, and exciting tech that we'll see flow in throughout the year. I was hella excited to see the latest display tech, and I was not disappointed whatsoever — these monitors are killing it.

We've gathered a shortlist of our favorite monitors at CES 2024 to keep an eye out for as the year goes on. CES is finally coming to a close, so now we must lie anxiously in wait for these products to launch. 

For now, here's a taste of the most exciting monitors at CES 2024.

1. Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP

The top of this list is easily the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP, which is a 32-inch OLED monitor with a 3840 x 2160 resolution clocked in at a 240Hz refresh rate with up to 1,300 nits of brightness and 800R curvature. Damn, that's a whole lot of screen.

Not only that, but this baby has the ability to drop to a 1080p panel with a 480Hz refresh rate at the press of a button. This is the first time I've heard of a monitor capable of quick-swapping resolution and doubling the refresh rate while it was at it. Truly wild stuff.

2. Alienware AW2725DF 27-inch OLED

It is the year of OLED gaming monitors and I literally could not be happier. Alienware comes out swinging with its Alienware AW2725DF, a modestly sized 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 OLED monitor. This machine clocks in at a 360Hz refresh rate with 99.3% DCI-P3. That means this baby is going to be colorful as all hell.

We don't have an estimate on the nits of brightness, but its bigger 32-inch sibling is supposedly rocking up to 1,000 nits of brightness. We're hoping that the 27-inch won't be too far behind. The 27-inch also boasts a 0.03ms response time and DisplayHDR True Black 400. We are so excited to get this into our lab and see what it can really do.

3. Dell UltraSharp 40 (U4025QW)

Dell doesn't stop with the impressive showings, also revealing the Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor (U4025QW). Step back, you're about to see a 40-inch, 5K monitor clocked in at 120Hz with 99% DCI-P3. Colors? BOOM. Brightness? BOOM. Well, we don't know the exact brightness, but this monitors looks hella bright.

Did we mention it's curved as well? This machine will wrap around your eyeballs like a fever-dream-blanket. It even doubles as a docking station, offering two additional Type-C ports and a USB Type-A port that pop out of the bottom bezel. This badass display might break your wallet, though, starting at a whopping $2,399.

Alienware has just revealed its latest monitors in the form of a 32-inch and 27-inch QD-OLED display. If that's not enough to get you hyped, the former is a 4K gaming monitor and the latter is super impressive with its 360Hz refresh rate at 2K resolution, making both pretty epic additions to the brand's catalog.

Ever since I bought my first LG OLED TV and trudged knee-deep through a treasure trove of phenomenal PS5 titles on it, I instantly saw the unmatched beauty that this technology had to offer. Immersion within any game is vital, and having a stunning OLED window into those worlds very quickly becomes a necessity. While we haven't gotten our hands on the Alienware 32-inch QD-OLED display quite yet, it is phenomenal to behold, and I cannot wait to see if it blows our minds.

Alienware 32-inch and 27-inch OLED monitors

The Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED gaming monitor, designated AW3225QF, gets me giddy. Just thinking about its curved display, phenomenal 3840 x 2160-resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time, and advertised peak brightness of up to 1000 nits has me hyped beyond all belief. Dell claims the monitor covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, while it also features VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and DolbyVisionHDR.

At its rear, the monitor features a DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B, and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A ports. In its quick access section, which is beneath the bottom bezel, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port and USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port. It has a height-adjustable stand of 110 millimeters, a tilt from -5 to 21 degrees, and swivel from -20 to 20 degrees.

What particularly excites me about this monitor, beyond the great panel and large selection of ports, is that its stand seems to be space efficient. And with a Console Mode designed to optimize HDR on console and a HDMI 2.1 port to utilize 4K@120Hz, it's prepared for those who game on more than just PC.

The Alienware 27-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor, designated AW2725DF, is a tad less crisp than its sibling at 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution, but it makes up for this with far swifter refresh rate of 360Hz. It similarly features the same 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time and Vesa DisplayHDR True Black 400.

Its ports selection includes two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C. It features the same 110mm height adjustable stand, -5 to 21 degree tilt, -20 to 20 degree swivel, but it also has a -90 to 90 degree pivot.

The Alienware 32-inch 4K QD-OLED and 27-inch 360Hz QD-OLED become available on January 11, and we can't wait to get our hands on them.

CES 2024 opens its doors next week, but it's expected that many companies share information on their upcoming products a few days beforehand. Acer has unveiled its new line-up of Predator gaming monitors, with two OLED models and two MiniLED models launching in the first half of 2024.

Three of the monitors are standard ultrawide at 21:9, but the most expensive of the bunch is super ultrawide with a 32:9 aspect ratio. They also all feature AMD FreeSync Premium, a USB Type-C port at 90 watts, and a built-in KVM switch that allows you to quickly swap sources.

CES 2024: Predator Z57 gaming monitor

The Predator Z57 is a monstrosity, solidifying itself as the most intense option within Acer's latest gaming monitor announcement. It's a super ultrawide monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio and 1000R curvature, measuring at 57-inches with a DUHD (7680 x 2160) resolution. I'm not even sure I could fit this thing on my desk, and if it's somehow possible, I'd have to reconsider my seating arrangement.

Beyond that, its 120Hz refresh rate and 2304-zone MiniLED panel are hard not to drool at. It features VESA DisplayHDR 1000, and Acer claims it can reach up to 1000 nits of brightness and covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. 

It's no surprise a monitor as enormous as this one features a PBP (picture-by-picture) mode, allowing the user to divide the display down the middle to view two outputs at once. Its 32:9 aspect ratio allows you to perfectly divide two 16:9 outputs each at 3440 x 2160-pixel resolution, which is great if you want to game on one half of the screen and get work done on the other.

It also has PIP (picture-in-picture) mode which places another output in a small window on the screen, ideally allowing the user to experiment with the location of their multiple outputs. Its ports are two HDMI 2.1 slots and a Display 1.4 port, alongside VESA compliant for those who'd rather hang it on their wall. And with its dual speakers at 10 watts, it should offer decent sound quality.

The Predator Z57 launches in North America during Q2 2024 and starts at $2,499, which matches our expectations in price. This is no doubt only for those who are willing to throw a huge chunk of cash down for something phenomenal.

CES 2024: Predator X34 V3 gaming monitor

The Predator X34 V3 is tame when compared to the Z57, but it's still mighty for those who have a reasonable amount of space. It's a 34-inch ultra-wide MiniLED monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 1500R curvature, 180Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time and 3440 x 1440-pixel resolution. Acer claims it covers 94% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and it also has VESA DisplayHDR 1000.

It features two HDMI 2.0 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4. You can also expect adjustable height, tilt, swivel, and a wall mount being provided. It features two 5 watt speakers, which likely means it won't be an ideal audio solution, but we'll have to test it to know for sure.

The Predator X34 V3 is the cheapest of the bunch, launching in North America during Q2 2024 at a starting price of $899.

CES 2024: Predator X39 & Predator X34 X gaming monitors

Now, we move onto my favorite types of display: OLED. Acer has unveiled two new models, the 39-inch Predator X39 and 34-inch Predator X34 X.

Both are similar in many respects excluding their size, each with a WQHD 3440 x 1440-pixel resolution, 800R curvature, up to a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.01 millisecond response time. Acer states they will cover up to 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. They also feature VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 and are Eyesafe 2.0 certified.

The Predator X39 and Predator X34 X will launch in North America during Q2 2024, with the former starting at $1,499 and the latter starting at $1,299. 

Gamers and late nights are a well-worn combination, but Samsung hopes to see that change with their new lineup of Odyssey gaming monitors. The new Odyssey G9, G8, and G6 will come with anti-glare technology and DisplayHDR True Black 400 certifications so you should be able to game in a variety of lighting environments without resorting to bulky anti-glare monitor shields.

All three monitors also feature DisplayHDR True Black 400 to deliver clear details and vivid colors across all kinds of content. They're powered by AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for low-latency HDR gaming and feature two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB hub, and a DisplayPort 1.4 input.

The lineup's star player is the Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SD), a 49-inch curved ultra-wide gaming monitor with a DQHD resolution (5120 x 1440) and 32:9 aspect ratio. This beast of a monitor boasts a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time, so its performance is faster than you're ever likely to need on an ultrawide display panel. But for the gamer who wants to have multiple windows open without resorting to dual-monitor setups, the G9 is the ultimate luxury item.

The Odyssey G9 and G8 also feature Samsung's new Multi Control technology to make transferring images and text between compatible Samsung devices even easier. If you're not a Samsung power user, both monitors also offer Samsung's SmartThings Hub to connect various IoT devices that are compatible with Matter and the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA), to make switching between work and play easier.

The Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) is the first flat 32-inch Samsung OLED gaming monitor to feature a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The G8 also has a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03 GTG response time, and access to the Samsung Hub and Multi Control. So if you don't need an Ultrawide monitor, the G8 is certainly the way to go.

Lastly, the Odyssey OLED G6 is a 27-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio, 320Hz refresh rate, and 0.03ms response time. Given the high refresh rate, minimal lag time, and lower resolution the G6 is an elevated take on the classic e-sports monitor. While 320Hz isn't the fastest monitor tech we've ever seen, you'll need to run a game with minimal graphics in order to push even the best hardware to high enough frame-rates.
