The low $199 price and double the data speeds were likely the primary reason that 1 million iPhone 3Gs were sold in the first weekend of its launch, but the 10 million downloads from the iPhone App Store—a collection of hundreds of add-on programs—within the same time period demonstrates that the software is as important as the sleek hardware. We can’t stand having to retype our iTunes account information every time we want to make a purchase, and many applications have stalled or crashed in the early going. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t impressed with the abundance of options. Plus, the App Store is open for owners of the original iPhone and iPod touch.
