All-Purpose Winner:

Lenovo ThinkPad T400 (90.1)

Runners-Up
Second Place: Sony VAIO SR (86.3)
Third Place: Asus N50v (74.2)
Fourth Place: Dell Studio XPS 13 (58.7)

While it didn’t dominate, the ThinkPad T400 performed well enough over all the different tests for it to squeak past the VAIO SR to take the lead, despite the Sony system’s winning in several categories.

Battery and Charging Results
The ThinkPad edged ahead of the VAIO SR based on battery life (386 minutes to 266 minutes) and power used when charging (6943.8 watts to 7373.8 watts). Still, it consumed a good deal more power than the Asus N50v.

Power Consumption During Use
The Sony VAIO bested the T400 when it came to average wattage during the Web-surfing test (18.7 watts to 18.9 watts), as well as PCMark Vantage (27.8 watts to 29.7 watts) and Idle time (16.8 to 17.3 watts). However, the Lenovo was close behind during all three tests, and came out slightly ahead on our Movie test (22.5 watts to 24.3 watts).

Third-Party Ratings
All four systems in this category received identical EPEAT ratings of 21, but Sony was the only company to crack 5 in Greenpeace’s ratings—and even then by just half a point.
