Ultraportable Notebooks
These featherweight marvels weigh less than 4 pounds and are easy to stash in a bag. They’re not as fast mainstream notebooks, but they offer more power and bigger displays than the typical netbook. Prices start at $599, but a good ultraportable will cost $1,000 or more.
Thinner and lighter than even a thin-and-light notebook, an ultraportable notebook is a machine that weighs less than 4 pounds but still delivers the functionality of a full PC. Screens are smaller, keyboards are tighter, and processors are generally less powerful than with a full-size notebook.

What Can You Expect From an Ultraportable Notebook?
- Processor: Low-voltage processors such as the Intel CULV (also known as the Core Solo) or Core 2 Duo low-voltage are common.
- Display: Ultraportable systems sport 11.6- to 13.3-inch displays, and usually 1280 x 800, 1366 x 768, or 1440 x 900 resolutions.
- Integrated Graphics: The high voltage and high heat levels of discrete graphics chips makes them uncommon in this class of notebook.
- Weight: Ultraportables weigh less than 4 pounds, and you’ll usually pay more as you get closer to 2 pounds.
- Optical Drive: Many ultraportables save on weight and size by avoiding an optical drive, and some come bundled with external drives. However, most software these days can be installed via download or USB key. Unless you need to watch DVDs, you can usually live without an optical drive.
Buying Tips
- Scrutinize the screen size and resolution: Before you commit to your preferred ultraportable notebook, be sure you can live with the size of its screen. For some, a small screen with a high resolution is hard on the eyes. Fortunately, you can always increase the font size if you find yourself squinting.
- Evaluate your need for an optical drive: You also need to think hard about whether you want the optical drive to be built in, or if you can do without one entirely. Chances are, you don’t need one.
- Get a bigger battery: Unless you plan on staying chained to your desk (and why would you with an ultraportable?), opt for the notebook’s extended battery if one is available. It may add a little bulk, but the payoff is several extra hours of runtime.
