How to Change Your Default Browser in Windows 10

Whether you upgraded to Windows 10 or bought a brand new PC with the OS preloaded, you'll notice that Microsoft Edge is the default browser. Your default browser is the one that opens when you click in a link in your email, in the Windows searchbox or in other apps such as your instant messenger so it's very important. You can change this default to Chrome, Firefox or any other third-party browser, but that's not as easy as it was in Windows 7 and 8 where you could just click a button in the new browser. Here's how to change your default browser in Windows 10.

1. Navigate to Settings. You can get there from the Start menu.

Navigate to settings2.Select System.

Select system3. Click Default apps in the left pane.

click Default apps4. Click Microsoft Edge under the "Web browser" heading. If there's a different default browser, you'll see that program's icon under "Web browser" instead.

Click Edge5. Select the new browser (ex: Chrome) in the menu that pops up.

select Chrome

You'll see that your new selection is now listed under "Web browser."

New browser is listed

If you decide to change default browsers again, just return to these steps.

I searched the net for several days but nothing worked.

However, I put Chrome as default browser as per Avram's instructions and it shows in the right place but still will not open!!! Checked numerous times and it is still there as default.
I had this new PC for 10 days and Chrome opened all that time then suddenly would not open!
Is this a Microsoft time delay action to thwart Chrome users?
Anyway, this is the answer and explains a bit more than Firda below.

    Control Panel
    System and Security
    Programs
Under Default Programs click Set your default programs.
Click on Chrome in the big list on the LH side.
Then click on -> Set this program as default.
Then click the OK button at the bottom.

Then click on Chrome wherever you have it - on the Desktop - in the bottom tray - or on the Start page.
Mine opened up straight away. Phew!

But will the Microsoft bug change it again in 10 days time?
    Time will tell.

    Firda, et al.,

Going through the Control Panel worked. Many thanks.

  • Firda Says:

I used this way but it didn't work; it only shows Windows Edge and Internet explorers which sucks.

    Alternative:
Go to Control Panel, search deafult, and then it will show set deafult programs or something like that. Click on Google Chrome, and click set as deafult. It works well for me.

Jon Mulvaine´s guidance is correct. It worked for me. Thanks Jon.

  • Jon Mulvaine Says:

Nope. That doesn't work in windows 10. You can, however, from the control panel set chrome as the default app for all things it can open and that will work.

  • Down South Says:

Changed default browser to Chrome on my new laptop-will not show it though. Only blank page even though when ck my settings, it does show Chrome.

Please help me how to change default app settings in windows 10 phone

  • Lorenzo Says:

The process you explain plays out to the end but does nothing to keep Microsoft Edge from overriding google, which is clearly listed as the homepage. I'm just going to return the pc and never ever think of buying an Acer product again.

much too complicated messing about ,why cant you people make things easier .I am a disabled pensioner and am completely fed up
with al the rigmarole on this laptop.

I select Chrome as my default browser, but the selection doesn't stick.

  • Sue Ellen Wright Says:

I tried to go to Control Panel, but when I click the down arrow, the pop-up box does no populate. Otherwise Control Panel utilities seem to be working.

  • Sue Ellen Wright Says:

I've tried to reset my default browser repeatedly and it doesn't work. Windows Edge remains stubbornly in place, even though I try to select Chrome.

  • Steven Fielding Says:

This doesn't work. Google Chrome is there to choose but it does not populate in to the field. Instead this works:
Go to CONTROL PANEL - click the little arrow in the toolbar next to Control Panel and select ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS - DEFAULT PROGRAMMES - SET DEFAULT PROGRAMMES. Locate Google Chrome on the list and highlight it. Then SET THIS PROGRAMMES AS DEFAULT.

  • pressefr Says:

SOLVED: You can't just select Web Browser button, an obvious way to change it. You have to look a few lines down to the last option, "Set defaults by app" and from there select Chrome, and it should pop up in the Web Browser section.

  • Danijel Mladenovic Says:

Click first on Microsoft Edge(recommended) for web browser in default app, then you can change default app.

  • Daniel Brown Says:

LEFT CLICK ON BROWSER YOU DON'T WANT. When attempting to set another browser as default instead of MS Edge: MS has set up a counter-intuitive roadblock. You have to LEFT CLICK on the browser you DON'T want to get to the list of possible browsers.

  • Master of Scout Says:

Thank you, this Windows 10 upgrade had ruined all my links, until now.
    Very helpful and much appreciated.

  • Master Dong Says:

    Zachary's method worked for me

  • akabaneyuhi Says:

I've done it..but the default browser shows no selected app at all

  • scott Says:

same as below, tried all that, chrome shows but the system will not let me pick it. which is weird because my first load of 10 let me. You have a lot of ppl asking this so please post answer.

  • Lynette Says:

Did the above to make google chrome my default browser, it does show in the list but will not take the command to become default, will not work - keeps reverting back to edge which I dont want

  • Phil Hitchcock Says:

Your answer to set up Chrome 43 as updated browser in Win 10 doesn't let me change it. MS Edge only gives Edge and Internet Explorer as choices. Do you have an updated article to allow Chrome 43 to be the default browser? Thanks in advance, Phil

  • VAUTOUR110 Says:

CHROME is NOT seen in that group. It's not there.

  • Zachary Kipping Says:

This is what worked for me. I went to the bottom of the default apps page in the system page and clicked on set defaults by app. From there you can select the program and set it manually to be the default option for w/e it is.

  • NISHi Says:

Same problem as others, not popping up in the default apps

  • Andy Magnum Says:

That's all nice but how do you get Chrome (that I'm already using) to show in the popup window. It is not one of the choices there and it's not in the app store either. Typical Liberal Arts major answer. :)

  • Mike Vitetta Says:

Chrome does not show up. I even reloaded chrome and it still does not show up as an option for default browser.

  • Amanda Says:

I have the my default web browser set as Chrome; YET any time a webpage opens externally (say a program wants you to update their software, but you need to download it from a browser so the program opens the browser for you) it ALWAYS opens in IE. How do I stop that?

  • colin glass Says:

thank you so much, the new windows browser was blocking a plug from battle log stopping me gaming, chrome does not block it so now its back to killing pixels

  • Kristin Says:

I too, do not have Google Chrome listed in the Default Apps - Web Browser menu! It's so irritating!

  • Tina Breitbarth Says:

I have made google chrome my default browser but it wont open any pages ....why

  • Mike Says:

So I, like many, are frustrated with this problem. Especially because chrome is my browser of choice. Chrome does not appear in my list of possibly default browsers. I only have the option to "search the app store" not my computer for other applications to be my default. Making it impossible for me to set chrome as my default. Luckily, this is the only disappointment I've had so far.
