10 Tablets with the Longest Battery Life

  • MORE

Tablets make the ultimate couch companion, but even the sharpest and most powerful slates are useless if they can't handle hours of Web surfing, gaming and video streaming. That's why we've compiled the longest-lasting tablets we've ever tested. Every slate on this list lasted at least 8 hours on our battery test, which consists of continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi with the brightness set to 150 nits. If you need a tablet that can handle your Netflix addiction with ease, look no further.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 HD+

Uniquely, the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ features an adjustable kickstand and hinge, which allows you to stand the tablet up for better viewing. And you'll be able to stream plenty of Netflix, thanks to the 13:01 of battery life endurance. This $349 Android tablet features a full-HD 1920 x 1200-pixel display and front-facing speakers for an even better cinema experience.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2

The 12 hours and 37 minutes of battery life is a good reason to love the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2, but it's not the only one. This 10-inch Android 4.4 KitKat tablet sports a built-in kickstand and curved edge that allows you to use the tablet in multiple modes. The front-facing speakers positively boom audio at you, and the $269 price tag is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, on the software front, Lenovo adds a quick-settings menu called Bottom Switch, which gives you easy access to various settings.

Lenovo Tab 2 A8
Judging by the low $129.99 price tag on the Lenovo Tab 2 A8, you probably wouldn't expect to see it on our list of longest-lasting tablets. That's all the more reason its 11-hour-and-32-minute battery life is both memorable and impressive. Running a close-to-stock installation of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the device also features a very bright HD (1280 x 800-pixel) display that's great for watching videos and browsing the Web.
Apple iPad mini 2

Apple's iPad mini finally has a Retina display, and it's just as good as you'd imagined. But what you may not have expected from this iOS 7-powered slate is that it would get a crazy long 11 hours and 6 minutes of battery life over Wi-Fi. Like the iPad Air, the iPad mini with Retina display features Apple's new 64-bit A7 processor, making this one screaming fast slate.

Amazon Fire HDX 8.9

Amazon adds so much value to its tablet line, at least for Prime members who enjoy free movies, TV shows, e-books and music. But even non-Prime members will love the Fire HDX 8.9 because of its excellent parental controls, attractive design and brilliant 2560 x 1600-pixel display. Plus, this Android-based tablet will keep going for an amazing 10 hours and 19 minutes.

HP Pro Slate 8
Lasting for 9 hours and 49 minutes makes the HP Pro Slate 8 worth a second look. The 7.9-inch (2048 x 1536-pixel) screen performed well in our color accuracy and graphics performance tests. It also had a brighter screen than its competitors. Plus, it comes with a pen that can transfer notes from regular paper to the tablet.
Dell Venue 8 7000
Colors come alive on this tablet's 8.4-inch (2560 x 1600-pixel) OLED display; we found that it can display more colors than most tablets. This makes it perfect for watching movies and looking at photos on social media, which is where the 9 hours and 47 minutes of battery life come in handy. We also found that the Dell Venue 8 7000's booming speakers topped the charts. This tablet also features the first Intel RealSense Snapshot Camera, which can measure the length of objects in photos.
Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2

The massive Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 has "laptop replacement" written all over it, with the battery life to back it up. This mega-slate endured 9 hours and 32 seconds on our battery test, which should give you plenty of time to utilize its neat multitasking features and stylus apps. The Note Pro 12.2 is built for the office, and you won't have to worry about it running out of juice when you need it most.

Apple iPad Air 2

The industry standard for tablets is also one of the longest lasting, with 9 hours and 20 minutes of endurance. The Apple iPad Air 2 also boasts a gorgeous display in a super-thin design. The A8X chip ensures zippy performance. A sharper camera will capture all your precious moments. And, while the competition is catching up, Apple still maintains the best tablet-friendly app selection on the market.

Dell Venue 11 Pro

Fire up the Dell Venue 11 Pro,  and you've got a solid Windows 8.1 tablet that will last through 8 hours on a single charge. Attach it to the optional keyboard dock, and you've got a mini laptop that lasts a stunning 15 hours and 40 seconds. Factor in the slate's crisp 1080p display and zippy performance, and you've got a hybrid that can handle a day's work—and then some— on a single charge.

question: Do tablets' battery need to be fully used first before recharging? Or, how much should be used before recharging?

  • Nerd's Best Advice Says:

I appreciate your list and the work you put into it. However, it might do you good to include another tablet. It's the Toshiba Thrive. Although this tablet has technically been discontinued, it is still available to get. I get upwards of 16 hours out of my 1yr. old Thrive!

Just thought worth mentioning! Have a great day!

  • BusinessWoman Says:

Be aware that the author of this article it is likely an iPad owner (therefore an Apple lover with a heavy bias against anything not made by Apple). Therefore it will be extremely bias towards everything that the iPad can do (and likely exaggerate) and like many internet authors, the author did little to no research on anything not made by Apple relying on complains of new users to tear apart non-Apple products.

    Case an point:
Unlike the brief BIASED copy on the Lenovo. The Lenovo CAN and WILL connect to outside storage but does not provide enough power for many devices which makes it inconvenient as you will need to either provide alternative power, use the optional Lenovo docking station (which by the way is nice as it adds Ethernet, 3 USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI while it charges the tablet) or use a power USB hub. In addition, it has a MicroSD card slot in the side making it possible to have infinite storage on the go (but up to 64MB at a time) NO CLOUD. All you get with the iPad is a maximum of 64GB (and now 128MB) which is FIXED (you can add anything later).

In addition, according to Laptop (oh wait the same website) the longest lasting would be:
Dell Lattitude 10 (17:40 with 4 cell battery installed)
Acer Iconia W510 (15:09 with keyboard dock)
HP Envy X2 (11:57 with dock)

Then there are others like the Padfone but how could the author know about it it is not like he knows people like Daniel Burg to ask.

Finally I noticed they use the constant Web Surfing battery life as a benchmark not the constant video watching battery life since that would eliminate the ipad from the top 10 (and possibly the top 20).

But is the BIASED author going to say it (oh heck no!) he maybe expelled from the biased authored guild (or Laptop's Magazine staff which ever catches them first). Because not praising Apple is against Hollywood, the press, and the TV's rules. I think they kill you or something like that when that happens. Just noticed no one on big networks, magazines and movies EVER breaks that rule.

You know, despite the damn thing being a flop, the HP TouchPad deserves a nod here.

I have an HP TouchPad and I once left it in my work bag for like two weeks without touching it. I pulled it out and it still had 25% battery remaining. I had to look at it again to make sure it was right.

It's not just mine either, both mine and my wife's HP TouchPads go somewhere between 10-14 days between being charged. Hers gets much heavier use!

Jus' sayin', for all the beating up every does on the thing, can we at least give it some credit in that department?

I just wanted to point out that the Nook HD/HD+ now have full Google Play access, so that particular objection that some people have against them are now gone. Of course, if you want a Nook, you might be better off waiting until B&N announces their new partner for manufacturing them. (I'm hoping for Asus :)

  • Jess Says:

I agree with David and Todd, Asus infinity over the past year edged out iPad and pretty much everyone else but is not even mentioned. Just on that simple fact of selective product endorsement by these people put any thing they say into question. I went thru some of their other top picks and found once again selective product bias, excluding other better products. Can anyone say, kick back!

  • Todd Says:

Why didn't they include the Asus Padfone?
Afterall, it CAN be a tablet and has up to 63 hours of battery life.

  • David Says:

Notice how ASUS was completely left out of this. Some of their tablets go for even longer than the iPad.

  • Dr. Electronics Says:

That any of these do not have 20 hour battery life for 5 dollars extra extra built in is ridiculous you can put in 3 batteries like high capacity camera batteries each lasting 8 hours cost was 2.00 a battery triple or quade system should be standard 14 to 20 hour system I worked in electronics over 20 years

  • GhettoSquid Says:

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a glaring omission...I believe either the international or Verizon version was averaging 10-11 hours of battery life.
