How to Set Auto-play Behavior for CDs and DVDs

Avoid dialog boxes by defining what Windows does when you insert media or attach devices.

When you first insert a disc into your optical drive, connect a USB flash drive to your computer, or plug in your media player or phone, Windows 7 will display a dialog box asking you what you want to do with the new disc or device. It may give you the option to play an audio or video disc, burn data to a blank disc, browse the folders on a flash drive, or launch the device stage for your portable media player. To avoid the dialog boxes and control what Windows does when you insert media or attach devices:

  1. In Control Panel, select AutoPlay. A menu appears with a list of devices, media types, and possible actions for each.
  2. Scroll through the list and use the pull-down menus to select what you want Windows to do with each media or device type. If you want Windows to do nothing, select Take No Action from the menu. If you use different programs for various media types, select "Ask me every time".
  3. Click Save.
