Play Music Over Your Network Using Windows 7

Hear your music anywhere on your network using Windows 7.

homegrouppassword_sh.jpgYou don’t need a network storage drive to share music at home. Just two PCs running Microsoft’s latest OS.

  1. In the Network and Sharing control panel, set your network’s location to Home when you connect to your local wireless hotspot. Select what content you want to share (Documents, Pictures, Printers, Music, or Videos).
  2. Create a HomeGroup network. After Windows 7 configures the network, it will provide you with a password for connecting various PCs to each other.
  3. Turn on Media Streaming. In the Network and Sharing control panel, type “media streaming options” in the search bar.
  4. Name your media library. It’s easiest if the library’s name is the same as the computer it’s on, so you remember where content is located.
  5. Connect another device to the HomeGroup network (using the password you wrote down earlier).
  6. In Windows Media Player 12, the second PC should be visible under Other Libraries. From there, you can stream music, videos, and the like from one PC to another.
