Create GPS Shortcuts on Your Android Phone

Use shortcuts to get on the road faster.

Make GPS Shortcuts. You can also save regularly navigated GPS trips on the home screen for quick traffic checks and the subsequently occasional route redirect.

  1. On any home screen, press and hold down your finger.
  2. Select Shortcuts from the Add to Home Screen menu.
  3. Choose Directions & Navigation.
  4. By default, your current location is your starting point. You will need to enter a destination.
  5. Name the route, select an icon for the home screen shortcut, and hit Save.
  6. Now a GPS icon is added to the home screen. Tapping it opens the route in Google Map Navigation, complete with color-coded, up-to-the-minute traffic assessments.
  7. If your trip looks overrun by traffic jams (outlined in red), try rerouting. Hit the Menu button, select Route Info, then tap the Reroute icon in the lower right corner.
  8. Google Maps gives you three alternatives listed across the top of the window. Pick your course, and you're on your way.
