Change What the Windows Power Button Does

What if, when you pressed the Windows power button, the system locked, restarted, or went to sleep rather than shut down?

by Avram Piltch, Online Editorial Director on October 22, 2009

The power button on the Start Menu, by default, is set to shut down your Windows 7 computer in one click. But what if you would rather lock the system, restart it, or send it into sleep mode?

To change the power button’s setting:

  • Right-click on the Start button (or on the power button itself)
  • Click Properties.
  • Select the action of your choice from the Power Button Action menu
  • Click OK.
