AT&T customers finally have a Q to call their own. The carrier announced today that the Moto Q 9h global will be available exclusively to AT&T customers in the United States for $199 (through the holidays). It's the first Moto Q smart phone sold in the U.S. with worldwide capabilities, and it has a lot going for it, especially compared with Verizon Wireless' latest Q9m. The keyboard is even better; you get the excellent Opera Mobile browser; and you can edit and create Office files using the bundled Documents To Go. Plus, there's built-in GPS for getting turn-by-turn directions, if you sign up for the TeleNav GPS Navigator service.
Although it's a little large compared with the BlackBerry Curve, we appreciate the large screen and big, comfortable keyboard. Web surfing in our preliminary tests was very quick over AT&T's HSDPA network, and the two-megapixel camera with flash is a welcome improvement over the old Q. Motorola is also debuting My Q Paks, a suite of third-party application bundles. The Road Warrior bundle, for example, includes WorldMate 2007 and Zagat guides. These bundles will be free for one year.
Outside the U.S., AT&T customers can use the Moto Q 9h global in more than 135 countries to access e-mail and other data applications and to browse the Web, and they can make or receive phone calls in more than 190 countries. The domestic voice calls we've made so far have sounded great, with plenty of volume. Bonus: Motorola includes an extra-capacity battery in the box for heavy talkers.
