How to Upgrade the MSI Wind NB's Hard Drive

The 2.5-inch SATA Drive on the Wind can be easily replaced with a larger or faster model.

Steps / Versions:
Print

Wind Hard Drive and MotherboardOne of the most interesting features of the MSI Wind NB is its SATA hard drive. Unlike some other leading mini-notebook makers (ex: ASUS), MSI chose to to include a regular hard drive over a solid state and they were kind enough to include a name brand, high-quality 2.5-inch SATA drive in the Western Digital Scorpio.

Perhaps unintentionally, MSI has also made it relatively easy to swap out the pre-installed hard drive, but doing so will definitely void your warranty.

So why would you want to void the warranty and spend the extra money to upgrade? Perhaps you want a higher capacity hard drive. At the time of this writing, you can get a 320GB notebook drive (also a Western Digital Scorpio) for under $130. Perhaps you want a faster 7,200 rpm model or even an SSD. Maybe you're just the kind of person who likes to tweak things just because you can.

Anyhow, if you're willing to forgo your warranty, you'll need a miniature philips head screwdriver and a replacement 2.5-inch SATA hard drive. Then you'll need to follow these steps.
